I stood tall, unafraid of the shadows cast by her accusations, and confronted her directly. "What evidence do you have that I switched it? Maybe it was already a gold-plated silver piece when you gave it to me!"
"Impossible! This is a family heirloom! I gave it to you because I considered you my future daughter-in-law," she retorted. "Besides, such a valuable item, why didn't you check it yourself? Who can you blame for that?"
Ah, so that's how it is. It seems that bad intentions run in the family; this mother and son are truly cut from the same cloth.
"Auntie, can we speak with some integrity here? I trusted you and didn't inspect the item. Turns out you've dug such a big pit for me!"
Upon hearing my words, Zhang Xincheng's mom plopped down on the ground and began to throw a tantrum.
"You have no conscience! First, you want to break up with my son, then you pressure him for money, and now you've swapped my bracelet! My family has really hit rock bottom by associating with a woman like you!"
"Oh, what a sin! That was passed down from my mother-in-law! I can't let down my mother-in-law or the ancestors of the the Zhang Family!"
Zhang Xincheng's mom was sobbing dramatically, drawing the attention of neighbors who began to point fingers at me and lecture me.
" Gu Xiaxia, it's not that I'm criticizing you, but how can you play dirty while dating someone? How will you ever get married if this gets out?"
"Honestly, these young girls today are all so cunning. This isn't dating; it's just setting traps!"
"If my son were to marry someone like this, I'd rather die than accept it. It's simply heartless!"
Suddenly, I became the target of their collective ire, drowned in a torrent of accusations and scorn.
Just then, Zhang Xincheng, who had been silent until now, spoke up to defend me:
"Mom, please get up first. I believe Gu Xiaxia is not that kind of person."
"There might be some misunderstanding. Maybe it was switched by that Delivery Guy. We have to trust Gu Xiaxia."
Zhang Xincheng's rational and sensible demeanor immediately earned him the admiration of those around.
After a phone call, the Delivery Guy quickly arrived at my doorstep.
He looked very nervous, and before Zhang Xincheng could ask anything, he blurted out, "It's her! She sent the bracelet yesterday."
"Did she say anything when she sent the bracelet? Did you see the red box packaging outside the bracelet?"
"No, there was no packaging, just a bracelet. She took a picture of the tracking number and closed the door. I don't know anything else."
"You’re lying! When you sent the package yesterday, you clearly put the bracelet in a box! You must have been bribed by Zhang Xincheng!"
The Delivery Guy swallowed hard, but he stubbornly insisted, "I'm not making this up. No box means no box. I remember it clearly; it was express delivery, and you placed the order yesterday."
Zhang Xincheng's mom pulled out a photo of the box and began explaining to the onlookers: "That red box came with the bracelet; it's an antique. You must have been greedy and kept both the bracelet and the box for yourself!"
The neighbors immediately looked at me with disdain, their voices rising in a cacophony of accusations that drowned me out.
Zhang Xincheng couldn't help but smile as he said, "Thank you for your trouble today. Please continue with what you're doing; I won't disturb you any longer."
Just as the Delivery Guy turned to leave, I quickly opened my phone to record and replay everything he had just said.
The others instantly panicked.
"I've called the police. None of you are getting away today."
