Jiang He turned his head, as if he were a teacher asking a student who couldn't answer a question, "What is it that you don't understand?"
Using such a tone to inquire in front of his subordinates indeed seemed a bit disrespectful. However, the events that had transpired in just a few minutes made Captain Wang realize that the person before him seemed completely oblivious to social niceties. Moreover, judging by Jiang He's demeanor, he appeared to be entirely unaware of the issue at hand.
With these thoughts in mind, Captain Wang decided not to dwell on it. "Why are you ninety percent confident that this person committed suicide? What about the other ten percent? Murder?"
Jiang He furrowed his brow and replied, "It can't be entirely that way. Current medical science generally categorizes causes of death into four types: suicide, homicide, accidental death, and natural death."
"I understand that," Captain Wang nodded in agreement. "That's exactly what forensic doctors do."
Jiang He shook his head. "You're being imprecise again; that's only part of a forensic doctor's job."
"Alright, alright. Part of it," Captain Wang conceded in the face of Jiang He's nitpicking. "So what about the remaining ten percent possibility?"
Jiang He spoke up, "There’s still a nine percent chance that it is indeed homicide. Clearly, this is the primary scene. The murderer either pushed the victim down or the victim tripped and fell against the Shoe Cabinet with enough force that it didn't move but merely bumped along its horizontal shape. Afterward, the murderer stabbed the victim in an unusual manner and left instantly, which is why blood still sprayed onto the floor ahead."
"That seems rather unlikely," Captain Wang shook his head firmly. "It should be very improbable."
Then he shifted his tone and asked, "What about the one percent?"
Jiang He raised a finger. "The one percent represents accidental death. The victim was holding a knife while walking here, but accidentally tripped and fell against the Shoe Cabinet. Under those conditions, the knife ended up stabbing her in the abdomen, resulting in this scene."
Captain Wang scratched his head, intrigued. "If that's the case, then that's quite a coincidence."
Jiang He responded, "There’s no such thing as coincidence in this world; everything that happens is merely a collection of probabilities for each event. No matter how small those probabilities may be, they indicate something could happen. What I do is gather all these probabilities to find the one that is most likely to be true."
"As for what the truth really is, I’m afraid only those who have died know."
Listening to Jiang He's philosophically charged words, everyone present seemed to ponder deeply; they appeared to grasp something yet also felt that Jiang He was talking nonsense.
But Jiang He paid no mind to what they thought; he was preoccupied with another corpse in his mind.
Earlier, while downstairs, Jiang He had already overheard the residents discussing the deaths of an elderly woman and a younger one, who were mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The friendly neighbors offered their theories: some claimed the mother-in-law killed the daughter-in-law, while others insisted it was the other way around. Each spoke with such conviction that it seemed they had witnessed the events firsthand.
Jiang He could not comprehend this behavior. He wondered how these people arrived at their conclusions without even being present at the scene.
Now, he had only seen the body of the mother-in-law; the body of the daughter-in-law was still unaccounted for.
"Where is the other body?" Jiang He couldn't help but ask.
At that moment, the detectives also realized that without proper evidence, they shouldn't jump to conclusions. The officer before them was indeed skilled.
Captain Wang led Jiang He to the bedroom door, where He Hui Juan's body lay on the bed.
Jiang He did not rush in but instead stood at the doorway, observing from a distance. He took in the overall layout of the room and noted that this was the master bedroom, significantly larger than the adjacent one.
A double bed was positioned against the east wall, made of what appeared to be high-quality wood. At the foot of the bed stood a computer desk. Jiang He examined it closely and recognized that it was a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 600 model. Those familiar with computers knew that for the same price range, a custom-built machine would typically offer better performance, while similarly performing machines would be cheaper if assembled.
It seemed that this family either had money or simply lacked knowledge about computers. Judging by the home decor, Jiang He quickly became ninety percent certain that they did not understand computers.
Against one wall near the door was a row of closed wardrobes, concealing their contents. On the opposite side of the bed stood a dressing table.
Jiang He recognized few of the cosmetics on the dressing table, which made him anxious. To uncover the truth behind these events, he needed to understand this woman well. If he didn't even know what cosmetics she used or their brands and prices, how could he truly understand her?
Before examining the body, Jiang He assigned a task to the detectives present: "Find out all the brands and models of cosmetics on this dressing table, and determine what each product is used for and their respective price ranges."
Upon hearing Jiang He's words, everyone exchanged glances. Although Jiang He seemed intimidating, he wasn't their superior; Captain Wang was still standing there.
"Go ahead," Captain Wang said with a resigned nod.
The detectives, accustomed to dealing with corpses rather than cosmetics, were clueless about women's makeup products. Fortunately, in today's world of advanced technology, smartphones had become indispensable across all fields. Each detective grabbed a phone and began searching for information on these cosmetic brands and models.
Jiang He finally focused his gaze on the body of the young woman.
To be precise, what Jiang He was looking at were the bloodstains beside her. The blood flowed down from the abdomen of the corpse, trickling along both sides, and it was evident that there was more blood on the right side of the body. However, what puzzled Jiang He was that the shape of these bloodstains did not resemble spatter marks.
Setting that thought aside for now, Jiang He continued to observe the corpse.
Overall, the body lay flat on the bed, as if a person were simply sleeping. Half of a blanket covered the corpse, while the other half hung down to the floor. Jiang He examined the blanket closely and found it to be intact, with no signs of tearing.
On the inner side of the half-draped blanket, he noticed a few sparse bloodstains.
Jiang He shifted his attention back to the female corpse.
Logically speaking, when a man sees such a scene, he should feel a rush of blood to his head; however, none of the men present reacted at all, as they felt no response to a woman’s corpse clad only in underwear. The woman wore only lingerie, nothing else.
To be precise, it could be described as lace lingerie, with a somewhat sheer style.
Jiang He reached out to touch the woman's lingerie, which made Captain Wang beside him feel somewhat awkward.
To ease the tension, Captain Wang joked, "Looks like she was still asleep when she got stabbed."
Jiang He didn’t catch that Captain Wang was just joking and not being serious; he also didn’t think his actions were inappropriate. He replied, "Just because she’s wearing lingerie doesn’t mean she was sleeping; that’s just one possibility. Moreover, based on my deductions, your guess isn’t very likely."
Captain Wang was left speechless.
Jiang He’s actions didn’t stop; he wasn’t being perverse but rather trying to determine what material it was made from. As he touched it, he felt the softness and snugness of the fabric—it was made from high-quality materials. The top and bottom pieces matched and were made from the same material.
After a moment, Jiang He finally turned his gaze to the most critical area: the wound on the corpse.
The wound was located above the navel and had a vertical orientation, resembling a "丨" shape, approximately five centimeters long. Jiang He could clearly see that the center of the wound was deep while both sides were shallow, consistent with a knife wound. Wearing gloves, he gently opened up the wound to examine its interior. It was deep; although not particularly long, it was certainly enough to be fatal.
Jiang He had once simulated two different scenarios of being stabbed and slashed using a pig, and he was very clear about the results of the experiment. A stab wound, as long as it wasn't too deep, could easily take a person's life, while a slash, regardless of how long the wound was, generally wouldn't be fatal.
When it came to taking a life, depth was always more significant than length.
The wound was located on the side near the chest. Jiang He observed that the skin flaps around the wound exhibited a regular pattern of jagged edges, while the area closer to the navel was smooth and clean. The two distinct shapes of the skin flaps were clearly caused by two different sharp objects.
Captain Wang, who was standing nearby, also noticed this detail.
Jiang He stood up and said, "From the appearance of this wound, we can see that the two ends exhibit two different states of skin flaps—one end is jagged while the other is smooth. The length of the wound is about five centimeters, and the depth is around ten centimeters. I am eighty percent confident that the murder weapon is the serrated knife found in the older corpse in the Entrance Hall."
Captain Wang pondered for a moment and replied, "So, the younger one must have died first, and then the older one?"
Jiang He clarified, "To be precise, I am ninety percent sure. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that this family had another knife of the same specifications."
Captain Wang shrugged and said, "Alright, you are thorough. So we can confirm that this corpse was murdered, right? If it were suicide, where's the knife? It couldn't have just sprouted legs and run away."
Upon hearing Captain Wang's words, Jiang He reacted strongly. "No, based solely on what I see from this wound, there's a fifty percent probability it was murder and a fifty percent probability it was suicide; accidental death can be disregarded. To determine whether it was murder or suicide, we need more evidence."
Jiang He's eyes sparkled with intensity. "This way, we can continuously push one probability closer to one hundred percent, and at that point, we'll be getting closer to the truth."
