My Tenant is a Female Ghost
The cave of the ancient tomb had been opened. Cao Yu and Bai Zhuo emerged from the entrance, each wrapped in a white coat. The soldiers stationed around the entrance quickly aimed their guns at them, but upon recognizing who they were, the communications officer called for Cai Wenwu.
Bai Zhuo supported Cao Yu as Cai Wenwu approached them with joy, grasping Cao Yu's hand. "Sister! You scared me to death! I'm so glad you're okay! And Brother Bai!" Bai Zhuo managed a weary smile. "I guess we made it back alive."
"By the way, Sister, what happened to your leg?" Cai Wenwu asked, noticing her limp as she walked, concern evident in his voice.
Bai Zhuo felt a cold sweat trickle down her back and glanced awkwardly at Cao Yu. Cao Yu shot him a discreet glare. "It's nothing, just a sprain. It's not serious."
"A sprain? Oh, I have a medic here who specializes in treating injuries. I'll call him over." With that, Cai Wenwu pulled out his walkie-talkie to summon help, but both Bai Zhuo and Cao Yu exclaimed in unison, "No!"
Cai Wenwu was taken aback, looking at them curiously. Bai Zhuo was at a loss for words, while Cao Yu cleared her throat. "Ahem, what I mean is that Bai Zhuo has already checked on me. He... he knows a bit about it."
"Is that so?" Cai Wenwu found it strange but didn’t dwell on it; what mattered most was that they had returned safely. "Alright then! Sister, Brother Bai, you’ve been missing for nearly two days. Go eat something first, then wash up and rest well. We'll take care of everything from here."
When a person's nerves are highly strung, the fatigue that follows once they relax can be overwhelming, and that was true for Bai Zhuo as well. He slept straight through until the next afternoon.
Upon opening his eyes, he found himself in a green military tent and smelled the earthy scent of the wilderness—a hint of outdoor cooking in the air. As winter approached, it felt chilly getting out of bed. Bai Zhuo put on a military coat and lifted the tent flap to find a guard standing at the entrance.
The guard saluted him as soon as he saw Bai Zhuo. "Mr. Bai, the mess hall is to your left; just turn left when you go out and you'll see it. If you need anything to eat, just tell the cooks directly. Commander Cai has escorted the pharmacology expert back to headquarters and instructed me that if you have any questions, you can come to me."
"Oh, alright. After sleeping for so long, I am indeed a bit hungry; I’ll go get something to eat." Bai Zhuo realized that Cao Yu had quietly slipped away and felt a pang of loss in his heart before shaking it off. He nodded at the guard to acknowledge he understood and asked, "By the way, have you seen that Japanese man?"
The guard replied, "You mean Kagura Keiha? The Commander said he disappeared after coming out of the tomb; Zheng Ming is also missing."
"Got it. Thank you."
Hearing that Kagura Keiha was safe eased a weight off Bai Zhuo's mind since one of his main purposes for coming here was to rescue him. After eating his fill and realizing there was nothing left in the ancient tomb that would make him linger, he decided to head back home to Ningcheng that afternoon.
...
As he emerged from the ancient tomb and looked at the tightly closed gate of his courtyard, it felt like stepping into another world.
The lingering thoughts of Bai Jiang, the terrifying visions of ancient battlefields, and the wealth of the Ancient Tomb Treasure all vanished in an instant upon seeing his home.
This place once held the scents of his parents, the essence of his grandfather, and even the fragrance of his sister. Even though they were no longer here, the feeling of home still remained. There had been offers in the millions to buy this estate, but Bai Zhuo had refused, likely for this very reason. Not to mention that Zhang Ni, the woman set up for an arranged marriage with him, wanted him to sell the house.
The door was unlatched; Kui should be at home. Bai Zhuo thought as he pushed the door open.
"Hey, Bai Zhuo... no, brother-in-law."
Bai Zhuo was startled. He saw Kagura Keiha kneeling at the entrance, revealing a smile that looked more painful than crying upon seeing him.
"What are you doing?" Bai Zhuo questioned.
"He is reflecting on his mistakes, Master," Kagura Aoi said, having appeared beside Bai Zhuo without him noticing.
"What did he do wrong?"
"First, he is punished for disappearing for so long without a word; second, he is punished for disregarding your safety—Master, you saved him, and while he returned safely, your fate remained uncertain. Such sins deserve punishment. Of course, I also bear some responsibility for not teaching him properly. Please... please punish me as well, Master."
Bai Zhuo felt indifferent about it all. It was quite miraculous how his relationship with Kagura Keiha had transformed from mortal enemies to... "brother-in-law?" He couldn't help but marvel at the wonders of fate.
"Forget it; I'm back safe and sound, aren't I?" Bai Zhuo closed the door and took a seat under the Pomegranate Tree to bask in the sun. Ever since An Zhi Xi taught Tree Spirit White Peach, White Peach had become elusive and was nowhere to be found at that moment.
Kagura Aoi followed him and knelt on the grass. Seeing Bai Zhuo return, Kagura Keiha thought he was saved but was met with a fierce glare from his sister and obediently knelt back down to continue reflecting on his mistakes.
"Did you tell your brother about... our situation?"
Kagura Aoi nodded, fearing Bai Zhuo's reproach. She explained, "The pure priestess has the strongest spiritual power; it was... it was he who figured it out himself. After repeated questioning, I finally told him. If Master disapproves..."
Bai Zhuo gently covered Kagura Aoi's mouth with a smile. "I didn't mean to blame you; I'm just a bit curious. In front of outsiders from now on, you can still call me Bai Zhuo or Brother Bai Zhuo. So, does that mean your spiritual power has weakened?"
“Gui Ye is not an outsider,” Kagura Aoi earnestly defended, then added, “Yes, Master, a shrine maiden must be pure and innocent to receive the most perfect divine power.”
Bai Zhuo felt a bit embarrassed upon hearing this, as if he had ruined a girl's future. He changed the subject and asked, “So what are your plans for the future?” Enjoying the lazy afternoon sun, he suddenly felt something soft on his lap.
Kagura Aoi pressed her ample chest against Bai Zhuo, her face resting on his thigh as she softly said, “Right now, Master is everything to Aoi. I will always follow you. However, after some time, I want to return to the Island Nation.”
“What’s wrong?” Bai Zhuo inquired.
“There are still some things, some belongings that belong to us siblings. I must get them back!” Kagura Aoi's tone was calm, but it was clear that her words were filled with unwavering determination.
“Do you need me to go with you?”
Kagura Aoi looked surprised. “Master, would you be willing to accompany me?”
Looking at her youthful face, Bai Zhuo felt a stir of emotions. After all the effort he put into rescuing Kagura Keiha, losing both Kagura Aoi and Kagura Keiha would significantly diminish his strength.
He thought for a moment and replied, “Haven't you said your spiritual power has weakened quite a bit? I'm not too reassured… Let’s just consider it a trip to your place.”
Kagura Aoi looked up at Bai Zhuo. He noticed an indescribable sparkle in her eyes.
