The sound of rushing water grew louder, echoing through the narrow passage. Bai Zhuo pulled Cao Yu along, desperately fleeing, but there was no way to outrun the swift current. In just a moment, they were swept away.
Bai Zhuo strained to hold Cao Yu close, the icy water engulfing them with tremendous force. He had no chance to appreciate the warmth of her bare body in his arms.
His arms were strong as he held his breath and clung tightly to Cao Yu, tumbling in the water. He could feel her hands gripping him just as fiercely, driven by her instinct to survive.
Protecting Cao Yu, Bai Zhuo's limbs collided painfully against the rocky walls. He wanted to cry out in pain, but in this water, he couldn't do that. In less than half a minute, he was on the verge of exhaustion, and Cao Yu, too, was struggling; the cold water was overwhelming her senses.
Just when Bai Zhuo thought he would drown, the current began to slow. He opened his eyes and realized that the water level wasn't as high as he had feared. It had only been a brief surge that caught them off guard.
Cao Yu remained panicked in his arms. He tried to stabilize himself but found it difficult; he could only lift her up with all his strength.
"Cough cough... hiss... cough cough..." As she breathed in fresh air, Cao Yu took several deep breaths but choked on some water and began coughing uncontrollably. The darkness faded away, and her pale arms wrapped around Bai Zhuo's neck, her entire body hanging onto him.
Bai Zhuo patted her back gently to help her breathe easier. "It's okay, it's okay."
In truth, Cao Yu was beautiful. Her face was different from Ouyang Shirei's softness; instead, it had clearer lines. Coupled with her cool demeanor and aura, she truly lived up to the industry nickname "Cao Lengleng."
Her hair was disheveled and wet against her face. Amidst her cold beauty lay an alluring charm that bore some resemblance to An Zhi Xi. Though her chest was modestly sized compared to Ouyang Shirei's, her slender figure maintained a perfect proportion that stirred a man's protective instincts. Bai Zhuo glanced down at her and thought this.
Cao Yu was oblivious to Bai Zhuo's scrutiny as she struggled against him, panting heavily with relief at having escaped the clutches of death once more.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly, and without any covering, her soft curves brushed against Bai Zhuo's chest. Despite being submerged in cold water, his body reacted instinctively.
As Cao Yu calmed down, she finally noticed something unusual beneath her. Her cheeks flushed bright red like vibrant summer flowers under the sun; she quickly released Bai Zhuo but sank back into the water again. After swallowing a few mouthfuls of cold water while being lifted by Bai Zhuo, she coughed once more.
The now-calm surface of the water reached just below Bai Zhuo's chin while Cao Yu barely reached his neck and shoulders; naturally, she sank again.
It was clear that Cao Yu couldn't swim.
She had to wrap her arms around Bai Zhuo's neck again, her entire body hanging onto him. Having a beauty in his embrace, especially one who was completely unguarded, was undeniably tempting. However, thoughts of Ouyang Shirei, Yang Liu, Ge Shui Lian, Kagura Aoi, and Miao Qi made Bai Zhuo's head spin. He slowly calmed down; after all, that was a normal reaction for any man.
"Hey, Crazy Woman, let's keep moving forward. There's some light ahead; we should be able to get out soon. You can't swim, so if you don't mind, I'll carry you," he said.
Cao Yu nodded lightly, a few strands of hair playfully swaying, making Bai Zhuo feel restless.
Walking through the water was incredibly difficult; it took over a minute to cover just ten meters. If they could swim, they would have crossed in seconds. Unfortunately, Cao Yu was like a duck out of water.
"Hey... Bai Zhuo," Cao Yu looked up at him, her gaze fixed on his stubbled chin.
"What is it?"
"My mother is mentally ill. Why did you deceive her? I... I feel like you're not that kind of person."
Bai Zhuo moved slowly through the water and rolled his eyes at her words. "Of course I'm not that kind of person." He added, "I was just about to ask you about this. Do you have a deceased brother named Cao Xin?"
"Ah! How do you know?" Cao Yu asked in surprise.
Just as he thought! This made sense! It must be that after spending time with Cao Xin, her mother sensed her son's presence in him and mistook him for her son. Bai Zhuo thought to himself, "Once we get out of here, I'll help you with this. You know I'm an Onmyoji."
"Ah? Why would you help me?" she asked.
"Well... various reasons. Plus, you're Wu's cousin; I'll help you with this. But I can't guarantee that I can cure your mother—there's only a seventy percent chance."
Cao Yu tilted her head and smiled brightly. "Seventy percent? That's already quite high! If you really cure my mother, you can have as much money as you want."
"Money is secondary; just don't call me a fraud anymore."
Hearing Bai Zhuo say this made Cao Yu feel a bit embarrassed. She stammered, "Um, back then... I'm sorry. I was just a bit anxious..."
Bai Zhuo was somewhat surprised that this cold woman would apologize first. He glanced down at Cao Yu, who suddenly screamed and pushed his face away forcefully. "Ah! Don't look at me!"
Bai Zhuo shrugged nonchalantly and said, "You've already touched it. Look at you still hanging onto me; do you really care if I take another look?"
"You..." Cao Yu blushed more times in that moment than she had in the entire past year combined. Her cheeks flushed, she tried to maintain her composure and replied lightly, "That's different!" However, it was clear from her tone that she felt extremely embarrassed inside.
"What's different? You're just deceiving yourself by covering your ears to steal a bell."
Cao Yu wanted to retort but suddenly caught a glimpse of something shining beneath the water ahead. She called out to Bai Zhuo and pointed at the bottom, "Look, what is that?"
"What is it?" Bai Zhuo followed Cao Yu's delicate finger and indeed saw a glimmering light at the bottom. He stepped closer for a better look and was astonished to find a large Gold Ingot! Cao Yu noticed it too and gasped, "It really is gold!"
Bai Zhuo looked down and asked, "Should we fish it out to take a look?"
Cao Yu pushed his face away, signaling him not to lean down. "Let's forget it. Although it's valuable, it feels a bit strange. If you need money, I'll give you some when we get out."
Bai Zhuo nodded and walked around the Gold Ingot.
The further they went, the more Gold Ingots appeared in the water, and their sizes grew larger as well. After taking a few more steps, the Gold Ingots transformed into golden vessels on the bottom. These Cultural Relics would definitely cause a sensation in the Antique World or even in Archaeology if they were unearthed.
Bai Zhuo stared at these dazzling treasures in awe; if he weren't holding a beautiful woman in his arms, he might have been tempted to dive into the water to retrieve some for sale.
