My Tenant is a Female Ghost
After the Nanyang Voodoo Incident, Ningcheng was once again shaken by a startling event. A strange video leaked from a certain website, becoming a topic of conversation among people. The video was a brief surveillance clip, but it appeared quite supernatural.
In the video, two individuals were facing off. One of them was the long-missing Kagura Keiha, while the other, though masked, was instantly recognizable to Bai Zhuo as Wang Kun, the corpse servant. Lightning crackled around Wang Kun, while snow and ice surrounded Kagura Keiha. It seemed they were engaged in a conversation; Kagura Keiha appeared to be on the verge of action when suddenly, the scene was cut off by a flash of lightning, leaving only grayish-white snowflakes on the screen. Many believed it to be a movie shoot, but only those in the know understood it was real.
"Damn it! Wang Kun is one of Leng Xuanhe's people?" Bai Zhuo cursed through gritted teeth, sensing the gravity of the situation.
"Big nephew, do you recognize this masked person?"
Bai Zhuo gritted his teeth and replied to Hu Fei, "Yes! Uncle Hu, I nearly died at his hands twice. The first time was struck by his Mystic Thunder Spell, and the second time was last month when I was stabbed by his Corpse Servant. Even if he turned to ash, I would recognize that slightly plump figure!"
"So dangerous? Last month when Uncle Hu wasn't around, I heard there was an injury reported at Ning University. There were even gunshots; it couldn't have been you, could it?"
Bai Zhuo forced a bitter smile. "Of course it was me! That guy Wang Kun is a corpse servant; I let my guard down."
Hu Fei asked, "Do you have any evidence proving he is the murderer? If so, we can use our channels to arrest him directly!" Upon hearing this, Bai Zhuo replied, "Unfortunately not. This guy is extremely cautious. During the last Nanyang Sorcery incident, that sniper who took the shot was controlled by Wang Kun."
Hu Fei pondered for a moment and murmured, "Wang Kun, Wang Kun..." He then extinguished his cigarette and opened a drawer under the table to pull out a stack of photographs. After flipping through several, he took out two and pointed at a blurry figure in one of them. "Is this Wang Kun?"
Bai Zhuo grabbed the photo and confirmed, "That's right! This is him! How does Uncle Hu have his photo?"
"Oh! A month ago I was busy with a major Tomb Robbery case where criminals destroyed numerous historical cultural relics and ancient sites, resulting in several archaeological experts' deaths. Although I understood what happened, I felt something was off and kept some key photos. These two were taken casually by Comrade Lu Shuang before we entered the mountains. I found this person suspicious and decided to keep the photos and investigate further. All I found out was that his name is Wang Kun; nothing else came up. Director Li was eager to close the case on the last Tomb Robbery Case; now it seems there’s more to this case than meets the eye!"
Bai Zhuo asked curiously, "Uncle Hu, where is the ancient tomb located?"
Hu Fei smacked his lips and lit another cigarette. "It's at an unnamed mountain on the border between Ningcheng and Haicheng."
"Can I go take a look?" Bai Zhuo inquired.
Hu Fei replied, "It's not that you can't go; it's just that it's no longer under my jurisdiction—someone else has taken over. Plus, there are too many people around; it wouldn't be convenient for you to go."
"Oh, I just wanted to take a look. If it's inconvenient, then forget it."
Hu Fei added, "If you think it's necessary to check it out, my nephew can ask Cai Wenbin for help."
"Cai Wenbin?" Bai Zhuo asked, puzzled. "Uncle Hu, if you can't help me, what can he do?"
Hu Fei chuckled, "Nephew, have you forgotten who that guy's brother is?"
Bai Zhuo suddenly realized, "Oh, Cai Wenwu!"
"Haha, here's Cai Wenbin's phone number. Take it. By the way, was your Leng Xuanhe one of the Onmyoji Association members?"
Bai Zhuo took the note and laughed, "Yes, his Leng Family holds a prominent position among the Onmyoji in Ningcheng. The Cold Young Master of the Leng Family is quite impressive now!"
"Leng Family's Leng Xuanhe?" Hu Fei took a puff of his cigarette and asked, "Isn't he from the Tang family’s Tang Baifu?"
Bai Zhuo shook his head. "Tang Jie from the Tang family is dead. Their family has fallen drastically. Compared to the Leng Family now, they are hardly a threat."
Hu Fei inquired, "Don't they still have a grandson named Tang Bao? Just one death shouldn't cause such a decline."
"Uncle Hu, you don't know the situation. In short, the Tang family is facing internal and external troubles. Plus, with Tang Baifu getting older, he won't last much longer... Uncle Hu, do you have some past grievances with Tang Baifu?"
"Not really. I just think those people consider themselves superior and look down on others. Only your master is different. Your master... well, he's already gone; no need to mention him. Nephew, from now on, we’ll rely on you as the Onmyoji consultant for Ningcheng's Public Security Bureau."
"Don't worry, Uncle Hu. As long as I can help, just let me know. Also, Uncle Hu, you should have met Huang Jiangliu from Wanbao Group; he's one of us. If you're free tonight, let's go out for dinner together. If anything comes up, feel free to call me. I still need to stop by his place later."
"Alright, let's have dinner together tonight and keep in touch by phone!"
After leaving Hu Fei's office, Bai Zhuo went downstairs where Huang Jiangliu's secretary Liu Yun had been waiting in the car for quite some time. The vehicle was a Cayenne that Huang Jiangliu had arranged for Bai Zhuo.
"Let's go to the company," Bai Zhuo said.
"Okay," Liu Yun started the car and drove towards the headquarters of Wanbao Group. Bai Zhuo was lost in thought, and the sachet in his pocket emitted a faint fragrance reminiscent of orchids, filling the car with a refreshing scent. Liu Yun found it strange but felt awkward to ask about it, so they remained silent throughout the journey.
Bai Zhuo rolled down the window, feeling much clearer-headed. "How's the company doing lately?"
"Pretty good. After we acquired Radiant Group, quite a few veteran employees got promoted. Everyone senses that there will be some major moves from the company soon, and they're quite motivated."
"As Huang's secretary, do you have any idea how we're handling the influence brought by the Japanese Kagura Family?"
This matter had originally been decided internally by the company's board of directors and had only begun to operate secretly last week. Bai Zhuo casually mentioned it, leaving Liu Yun utterly shocked. She forced herself to remain calm. "It's been somewhat challenging. Initially, we intercepted most of the profits, but we were immediately targeted by several companies. We had to give up a portion of our gains. Ningcheng and Haicheng's major enterprises took advantage of this situation. The Ningcheng Tang Family, Leng Family, and our Wanbao Group each took ten percent, and the rest flowed out."
"Only ten percent? That's so little?"
Liu Yun explained, "Mr. Bai, ten percent is already quite a lot. After all, it's a delicious piece of cake; being able to secure ten percent is satisfactory for the board."
Bai Zhuo nodded and asked again, "What about the Ningcheng Yang Family?"
"Ningcheng Yang Family?" Liu Yun pondered for a moment before asking, "Are you referring to Yang Qilin from the Yang Family? His daughter is named Yang Liu?"
"Yang Qilin? What a powerful name!" Bai Zhuo was taken aback; he hadn't expected this 'father-in-law' to have such an imposing name. "It must be him. Did they gain any benefits?"
Liu Yun shook her head and replied, "The Yang Family's influence is mostly overseas. Unless they bring investment back home, it's difficult for them to participate in local competition. However, his daughter's Sunshine Electric did secure some benefits. She has a nickname in their circle: Financial Princess... It seems like a tiger begets a tiger; indeed, like father like daughter! I've even heard Chairman Huang say that this Yang Liu might be even more capable than her father—she could rival Cao Lengleng."
"Financial Princess," Bai Zhuo chuckled softly but then asked upon hearing Cao Lengleng's name, "Cao Lengleng? Is she the president of Yuxuan Pharmaceutical, Cao Yu?"
Liu Yun was once again surprised; how did Bai Zhuo know even the icy beauty president Cao Yu? Was this still the same Bai Zhuo from before? What had he experienced? He was truly a mysterious man. Should she put aside her pride and pursue him? Following his lead would surely lead to great prospects... But then again, he had changed so much.
With these thoughts swirling in her mind, Liu Yun absentmindedly replied, "Yes, that's her. She's quite an impressive woman."
Yang Liu, just a senior in college, was already comparable to a CEO in her position. Given time, would she even need to work?
Both of them were lost in their thoughts, and the atmosphere fell silent once more as they continued their journey without a word.
Upon arriving at the company entrance, the security guard noticed an unfamiliar car and stopped it. However, upon recognizing it was Chairman Huang's personal secretary, he immediately let them through. Bai Zhuo said, "Wait a moment, Liu Yun. You go ahead; I’ll check on a couple of acquaintances."
Liu Yun nodded without saying much. After Bai Zhuo got out of the car, he drove away. Bai Zhuo asked the security guard, "Do you know Big Bull and Ergouzi?"
Seeing that Bai Zhuo had come from Liu Yun's car, the guard knew his status must be significant and respectfully replied, "Oh, Captain Niu and Ergouzi are both resting in the security department."
"How do I get to the security department? Take me to see them."
"Sure, sure..." The guard thought Bai Zhuo was there for an inspection and broke into a cold sweat but dared not remind Captain Niu. He could only silently pray that they would wake up.
Bai Zhuo followed the guard to the security department and found two burly men sprawled on a large sofa, snoring loudly—it was indeed Big Bull and Ergouzi!
What a pair! Bai Zhuo felt both amused and exasperated. He kicked each of them off the sofa onto the floor. Big Bull woke up startled, shouting, "What happened? Is there an earthquake?"
When he focused his eyes and saw it was Bai Zhuo, he awkwardly smiled and said, "Oh, brother... no, no, Mr. Bai! Good morning!"
"Good morning my foot! It's already past three in the afternoon! Look at you two!" Bai Zhuo pointed at Ergouzi, who was still groaning on the floor, scolding him, "You're supposed to be an officer; you're embarrassing me!"
The nearby guard watched as Bai Zhuo scolded Captain Niu without daring to interject since he recognized Bai Zhuo as a high-ranking executive. Big Bull pulled Ergouzi up and slapped him hard across the face. Only then did Ergouzi slowly wake up and ask, "Big Bull, is it dinner time?"
"Dinner my foot! Get up now!" Big Bull yelled. Once Ergouzi realized who had come in, he awkwardly smiled again and said, "Ah, Mr. Bai! Is there a mission?"
Bai Zhuo couldn't help but chuckle. "Just do your job well; if there's a mission, we will summon you! I just came to see how you're doing and if you're getting used to things."
Ergouzi chimed in eagerly, "Used to it? I'm very used to it! The job is stable with benefits and decent pay!"
Bai Zhuo confirmed that these two "bandits" had settled down, and he felt relieved. He nodded and patted Big Bull's shoulder, saying, "Do well, the organization won't treat you unfairly."
After Bai Zhuo left, a security guard, filled with admiration, asked, "Captain Niu, are you guys from some special forces? Doing secret missions?"
Captain Niu immediately straightened up and asked, "You know about that?"
The security guard was intimidated by Big Bull and nodded, then shook his head. Big Bull mysteriously leaned in and whispered, "Do you know who that person was just now?"
The security guard shook his head in confusion. "Is he an executive from our company?"
Big Bull leaned closer to the security guard's ear and said, "No, no, no. That person is doing things for the country. And he has a gun! A real gun!"
The security guard's eyes widened in shock. In today's stable society, even a hunting rifle is hard to come by, let alone a real military weapon. The fact that the young man just now had a real gun was astonishing!
Bai Zhuo was unaware that Big Bull had exaggerated his identity. He encountered an acquaintance in the elevator—Zhang Gui, Zhang Ni's boyfriend and also his high school classmate.
Since the last class reunion ended in conflict, Zhang Gui had been brooding over it. Now seeing Bai Zhuo, the source of his frustration, he couldn't help but confront him. "Bai Zhuo? What are you doing here?"
Bai Zhuo shrugged helplessly. "This isn't your home; why do you care so much?" Zhang Gui was dressed in a suit with polished shoes, looking quite sharp. However, judging by the style of his attire, he wasn't an employee of Wanbao Group; Bai Zhuo guessed he was there for business.
Zhang Gui replied, "Because of you, I broke up with Zhang Ni."
So he was Zhang Ni's ex-boyfriend.
"Because of me?" Bai Zhuo thought to himself. Did he find out about my affectionate moment with Zhang Ni at the airport? That... couldn't be it, right?
Zhang Gui continued, "Of course it's because of you!" His tone suggested it was obvious. "Ever since that reunion, Zhang Ni has been acting strange. Then out of nowhere, she brought up breaking up with me. What other reason could there be besides you?"
Bai Zhuo didn't want to argue with him. Zhang Gui thought he had figured it out and was about to say more when the elevator suddenly stopped. The doors opened, and someone walked in—someone Bai Zhuo didn't recognize.
Zhang Gui's eyes lit up upon seeing the person, and his demeanor changed completely. He respectfully said, "Oh? It's Manager Han! Just the person I was looking for. I wanted to discuss some follow-up matters with you!"
Manager Han glanced at Bai Zhuo, searched his memory for a moment, and realizing he didn't recognize Bai Zhuo among his acquaintances, chose to ignore him. He turned to Zhang Gui and said, "Ah, Zhang! You arrived five minutes early. Quite punctual."
"Haha, I hope I didn't interrupt your work time, Manager Han."
"Well, you're in luck. I'm just about to see Chairman Huang. Since this matter requires Huang Dong's personal approval, it would be good for you to meet him as well."
Zhang Gui was overjoyed. "Ah! Thank you so much, Manager Han! You truly are my benefactor!"
Manager Han smiled. "I wouldn't dare call myself a benefactor; I'm just here to help you get familiarized." He turned back to Bai Zhuo and asked Zhang Gui, "Zhang, is this your colleague?"
Bai Zhuo spoke up proactively, "I don't have such capable colleagues."
Zhang Gui's eyelids twitched as he caught the sarcasm but refrained from responding in front of others. Manager Han then asked, "So which floor are you going to? I can press the button for you."
Bai Zhuo shook his head. "No need, I've already pressed it."
Manager Han looked at the elevator buttons and asked curiously, "That's strange; why can't I find it?"
Bai Zhuo felt annoyed encountering someone like Zhang Gui and found it amusing to respond to Manager Han's question. "Are you blind? Isn't that 66 lit up?" (To be continued.)
