"My Tenant is a Female Ghost" features a female ghost.
"What’s your name, kid?"
"My name is Bai Zhuo, with 'Bai' meaning white and 'Zhuo' meaning outstanding."
The room was filled with a faint scent of sandalwood and medicinal herbs, not at all overpowering. Great-Grandmother's legs were not very agile; she sat in a wooden wheelchair by the bed. Lying on the bed was a boy with his eyes tightly closed. Looking at his face, he bore a slight resemblance to Miao Xiaoqi. Bai Zhuo knew that this boy was Miao Xiaoqi's younger brother—Miao Long.
"Bai Zhuo, huh... It's quite rare to meet someone with the surname 'Bai' these days. Come, kid, sit next to Great-Grandmother." She patted the stool beside her. "Don't be shy; just treat this like your own home."
Bai Zhuo nodded and sat beside Great-Grandmother, asking, "I’m Qiqi's good friend. I’ve met Great-Grandmother before. You can just call me Bai. I wonder what brings me here?"
Great-Grandmother smiled kindly and shook her head. "Oh, it’s nothing serious. Have you heard from my Qiqi? Has her Seven-Colored Silkworm cocooned yet?"
Hearing about the miraculous Seven-Colored Silkworm piqued Bai Zhuo's interest. "Yes, Great-Grandmother! I faced off against a Sorcerer from South Asia whose Flying Yin Serpent Gu was truly terrifying. If it weren't for Fuzzy rescuing me multiple times, I don’t know how many times I would have died!"
"Oh? The Flying Yin Serpent Gu? Ah..." Great-Grandmother seemed to recall something and fell silent. Bai Zhuo didn’t interrupt her. After some time, Great-Grandmother returned to herself and smiled, "Old age makes one nostalgic; forgive me for that. So what happened next? How did it cocoon?"
"Well, later on, this guy got seriously injured trying to save me from that Flying Yin Serpent Gu Insect and was on the verge of death. I ended up killing that Flying Yin Serpent Gu Insect and used the Yin Yang Mirror to restore Fuzzy’s soul. Fuzzy consumed the corpse of the Flying Yin Serpent Gu Insect and cocooned right in my hands... It was my first time seeing such colorful silk; it was beautiful."
Great-Grandmother had been smiling all along, quietly listening. Once Bai Zhuo finished speaking, she nodded and asked, "Hmm... Bai, what do you think of our Qiqi?"
Bai Zhuo paused for a moment, unsure of her intent, then replied, "Oh, Qiqi? I think she’s wonderful—gentle in nature, delicate and beautiful. At just sixteen years old, she’s already so lovely; when she grows up, she’ll definitely be an unparalleled beauty!"
Great-Grandmother picked up a towel and wiped the sweat from Miao Long's forehead. "Here, girls can marry and have children at sixteen. Back in my day, I had my first child at fifteen—Qiqi’s grandmother. Qiqi is already sixteen; it’s not too early."
"Um... Great-Grandmother, that doesn’t seem quite right? Where I come from, sixteen-year-olds are still in high school; they’re considered minors and haven’t fully matured yet!"
Upon hearing this, Great-Grandmother neither confirmed nor denied it; she simply continued wiping Miao Long's forehead gently. Bai Zhuo remained calm and quietly sat beside Great-Grandmother, observing her actions.
Miao Long appeared to be around fourteen or fifteen years old, looking quite delicate. However, his hands were covered in scars, and he lay unconscious on the bed, seemingly trapped in a nightmare. It was unclear whether he was ill or suffering from something else, but he looked extremely weak.
Great-Grandmother spoke up, "This child has been unconscious for two days. Looking at his complexion, if we don't find the cause, I'm afraid he won't live much longer... Alright, Bai, you should go now. Qiqi is waiting for you outside."
Bai Zhuo glanced at Miao Long on the bed, nodded without saying much, and stepped out.
As he opened the door and walked out, three figures emerged from the shadows of the room. Miao Xiaoqi's grandmother was among them, accompanied by a middle-aged couple who stood respectfully behind her.
"Mother."
"Yes, did you all hear? Qiqi's Seven-Colored Silkworm has only been cultivated for less than half a year, yet it has already spun a cocoon..." Great-Grandmother sighed heavily. "I'm afraid the cocoon spun by the Golden Silkworm is an Emotional Cocoon."
The middle-aged couple must be Miao Xiaoqi's parents. They both gasped in shock. Miao Xiaoqi's mother exclaimed, "What’s going on? Does our Miao Family's Gu Worm have such a Cocoon? Grandmother, you never mentioned this before!"
Great-Grandmother gently stroked Miao Long's hair as a pigeon egg-sized Seven-Colored Hornet flew around her before landing obediently on her hand. "Our Miao Family's Gu Worm has a deep-rooted connection with its master; they share an extraordinary bond... As the saying goes, to spin a cocoon is to bind oneself. An Emotional Cocoon is like casting a love curse upon oneself—there’s no remedy for it. This is not something to be proud of; that’s why I never told you. Qiqi is the most special child among our clan; she not only cultivated the Seven-Colored Gu Worm but also the Golden Silkworm. Truly a blessing for our Witch Clan. I just never expected that the worst would happen to Qiqi... Alas..."
With Great-Grandmother's sigh, Miao Xiaoqi's mother was stunned. "Ah? But that child is just an outsider; what are we going to do?"
Miao Xiaoqi's grandmother sighed as well. "This matter... it's my fault. Qiqi hasn't interacted much with boys in the village. If I hadn't wanted her to see more of the world, this wouldn't have happened, and neither would her friends have met such tragic ends."
Great-Grandmother shook her head. "You can't blame yourself or anyone else for this. What’s meant to happen will happen. From what I heard from this boy, his feelings for Qiqi are likely those of siblings... If that girl were still here, things wouldn’t be so difficult... Alas... It's unfortunate that now there's this trouble with Long; I’m also worried..."
Seeing Great-Grandmother’s troubled expression, Miao Xiaoqi's father suggested, "Grandmother, isn't our dilemma about him being an outsider? Why not just bring him here?"
"It's not as simple as you think," Great-Grandmother said while playfully teasing the Seven-Colored Hornet on her hand. "You all know Qiqi is not one to lie. If what she says is true, this boy is deeply emotional and also a Yin-Yang Master. Although he may be somewhat lecherous, at such a young age he possesses treasures like the Soul Banner, Five Elements Plate, and Yin Yang Mirror—how could he be ordinary? According to Qiqi, there’s even a Millennium Ghost Immortal guarding his family... Even if this boy hasn’t faced storms yet, it doesn’t mean he’s just some pond fish! The most troublesome part is if we force him to be with Qiqi and he refuses, then Qiqi's Emotional Cocoon will activate and cause her immense pain. Such a thing is absolutely something I cannot do."
After hearing this, everyone in the room fell silent. As members of the Miaojiang Gu Clan with countless Gu Worms and Witchcraft techniques at their disposal, they ended up binding themselves with an Emotional Cocoon—what a shameful predicament! No wonder Great-Grandmother had never mentioned anything about Emotional Cocoons before.
……
“Bai, Brother Bai!” Miao Xiaoqi rushed over as soon as she saw Bai Zhuo, seemingly questioning him, “Brother Bai, what did Great-Grandmother say to you?”
Bai Zhuo found it amusing and didn’t think much of it. Seeing Miao Xiaoqi’s delicate and cute face, he joked, “Great-Grandmother wants to marry you off to me!”
Miao Xiaoqi froze in place upon hearing this, her charming face turning bright red. Bai Zhuo began to worry that her face might explode from embarrassment. Seeing her silly expression, he burst into laughter and playfully ruffled her hair.
Realizing that Bai Zhuo was just joking, Miao Xiaoqi responded with a teary voice, “Bai, Brother Bai! I won’t talk to you anymore!”
She turned and ran away with her slender waist twisting. Since Bai Zhuo was unfamiliar with the area, he hurriedly followed after her, repeatedly apologizing. After they left, a figure emerged from beneath a nearby tree—it was Climbing Tiger.
……
After safely escorting Miao Xiaoqi back home, Bai Zhuo felt a weight lift off his shoulders. However, he still felt somewhat restless. He needed to deal with the boy Cao Xin’s situation; after all, it had been dragging on for too long, and he felt guilty about it. At home, there were two Millennium Ghosts and a Tree Spirit on the verge of losing its spiritual essence. His master had been missing for quite some time now, and with the Kagura Family potentially targeting the Tang Family, it was hard not to be tempted by such a large opportunity. All these matters made Bai Zhuo extremely anxious, but there was no rush; he could only take things slowly.
After a peaceful night’s sleep in Miao Family Village, the next morning arrived.
Bai Zhuo yawned as he stepped out of his room and saw Yang Liu, Ge Shui Lian, and Miao Xiaoqi lined up under the eaves of the loft. Each held a toothbrush in one hand and a cup in the other while brushing their teeth. The three beauties turned to look at Bai Zhuo simultaneously. For some reason, they all huffed at him in unison without greeting him and continued meticulously cleaning their mouths.
Bai Zhuo asked in surprise, “Oh? Ge Shui Lian, your hand is better?”
Ge Shui Lian rolled her eyes and ignored him. He then turned to Yang Liu: “Yang Liu, did you sleep well last night? Did you wear your talisman?”
Yang Liu’s mouth was full of toothpaste foam as she poked her toothbrush around in her mouth, leading to various thoughts. She mumbled through the foam, “Pervert! Stay away from me!”
Bai Zhuo felt embarrassed and turned to Miao Xiaoqi: “Qiqi, it’s rare for me to visit your home; where are we going to play today?”
Miao Xiaoqi had been unusually prone to blushing lately for some reason. When she saw Bai Zhuo wink at her, her face flushed again. She awkwardly stirred her toothbrush around in her mouth to rinse out the toothpaste foam before turning and running back into her room, leaving Bai Zhuo feeling somewhat bewildered.
After a hearty breakfast, Bai Zhuo and his companions, led by Miao Xiaoqi, walked along the mountain path for about ten minutes until they reached a village at the foot of the mountain. Perhaps due to the National Day holiday, the place was teeming with people. Bai Zhuo thought that traveling during National Day was just asking for trouble. This wasn’t tourism; it felt more like coming to see a crowd and get into a brawl...
The village was small but filled with tourists, and he could even spot a few foreigners with blonde hair and fair skin. The streets were lined with vendors, some were young women in traditional attire, while others were locals dressed in ordinary clothes.
Miao Xiaoqi pointed to a long line ahead and said, “This is Peacock Village, and right in front is Peacock Lake. The peacocks inside are beautiful; let’s go take a look!”
Seeing such a long queue, Bai Zhuo felt overwhelmed. As the only male in their group, it seemed that waiting in line would be his duty. However, Miao Xiaoqi’s words made him feel a glimmer of hope.
“Let’s go! With me around, you won’t have to wait in line!” Miao Xiaoqi puffed out her chest like a peacock eager to show off its beauty and confidently strode forward, looking quite adorable.
“Hey! Qiqi, you’re back!” A young woman from Miao Village at the entrance of Peacock Lake exclaimed in surprise as she grabbed Miao Xiaoqi’s arm. “How was it outside? Was it fun?”
Miao Xiaoqi nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! It was so much fun, though I’m not used to the food… Sister, look! I made several friends!”
“Oh! Qiqi has grown up! You’re making friends now! Is that guy your boyfriend?”
Upon hearing this, Miao Xiaoqi blushed furiously and hurriedly replied, “No, no, no! That’s not it! Bai—Brother Bai is my very good older brother… Sister, don’t say that!”
Ge Shui Lian and Yang Liu exchanged glances and looked away from each other, unsure of what each was thinking.
The Miao girl realized that Miao Xiaoqi was shy and teased her further. “Alright, alright! Sister was just joking. After all, Brother Climbing Tiger is here too… Did you bring your friends to play?”
“Brother Ahu is also my brother; Sister, you should focus on Brother Ahu instead of others!” Miao Xiaoqi retorted. “Hurry up and let us in.”
The girl was left speechless by Miao Xiaoqi's response and blushed as well. “You little brat, hurry up and go inside; don’t block Sister from doing business here.”
She opened the door and let Miao Xiaoqi and Bai Zhuo enter. Just then, someone shouted from behind, “Hey! Beautiful lady, how can they cut in line? That’s so unethical; if that’s the case, we’ll cut in too!”
The young woman from the Miao Family, well-versed in the ways of the world, called out, "Hey there, handsome! Those few just now are all staff members from Peacock Lake. Did you see them buy tickets?"
The man who had been stirring up trouble thought for a moment, nodded, and fell silent.
As they entered, they were greeted by a simple dock where several flat boats were moored. The boatmen from the Miao Family were ready to set off at any moment.
Upon seeing Miao Xiaoqi, the boatmen inside all broke into smiles. "Oh! Qiqi is back!" "Ah, it really is her; Qiqi has returned."
One older boatman asked, "Qiqi, do you want to see the peacocks?"
Miao Xiaoqi replied obediently, "Uncle, I’m back! It's still the same as before. Just give me a boat; I can row it myself. I'm bringing a few friends to see the peacocks."
"Sure thing, Qiqi! Take my boat!"
Miao Xiaoqi thanked him and led her friends onto the boat. She skillfully lifted the long bamboo pole and pushed off, rowing toward the center of the lake.
The boat sped along quickly. Bai Zhuo watched as Miao Xiaoqi rowed with impressive skill and exclaimed in surprise, "Qiqi, I didn't know you had such talent!"
Her face flushed slightly as she confidently replied, "Hehe, I can do a lot of things that you all don't know about!"
Bai Zhuo laughed with the three beautiful women on the boat, completely unaware that a pair of sinister eyes was fixated on his back from a distance! (To be continued.)
