The production team was established, and I was assigned the role of assistant director by Director Wang, with the intention of reaping some benefits.
On the day of filming, I unexpectedly ran into Yan Yanfeng on set. She was dressed in her costume, adorned in silk and satin, sparkling with jewels.
Upon seeing me, a flicker of surprise and disdain crossed her eyes. "What are you doing here? Oh, what's this? Out of money and begging?"
I couldn't be bothered to respond and walked straight inside.
"Hey, I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" Yan Yanfeng stomped her foot in frustration.
I kept my gaze forward, ignoring her completely.
Yan Yanfeng grabbed my arm. "You worthless errand boy, how dare you ignore me? Do you believe I can have you kicked out of the production?"
Without looking back, I replied, "Go ahead."
"You... stop right there!" Yan Yanfeng gritted her teeth in anger.
"I dropped an earring in the restroom earlier; go retrieve it for me, or we won't start filming."
I chose to ignore her demands.
And so we remained locked in this standoff for the entire morning, without filming a single scene. The other actors began to voice their frustrations.
"The staff can't even handle this little hardship; they might as well quit."
"Seriously, who does she think she is? Making everyone wait?"
"In my opinion, people like this don't deserve to be on set."
They exchanged comments back and forth, all leaning towards supporting Yan Yanfeng. Liu Wan, who played the female lead's best friend, stepped forward and shoved me aside. "You lowlife! You're delaying our shoot; can you even afford to pay for this?"
I kicked back at her. "Everyone saw it; she started it first. I'm just defending myself."
Director Wang pretended not to notice and remained silent.
By evening, I managed to endure until the end of the workday. I stood up and said, "Ah, finally off work! I'm so happy."
The others froze in place, their expressions as if they had just eaten something foul.
The director also stood up. "Work's done, let's go."
I walked out alongside the director, leaving a group of stunned actors behind.
The next day, seeing that there was little hope on my side, all the actors turned to persuade Yan Yanfeng. They urged her not to hold grudges against someone like me and to focus on the filming. If this dragged on, it would only waste her own money.
Considering the financial aspect and with Yan Yanfeng eager to shoot her first major production, she finally relented and filming began. However, Yan Yanfeng remained true to her nature, directing the staff with an iron fist, casually altering lines and commanding the director.
"This line is too long; cut it down."
"This scene doesn't suit me; change it."
"Director, stand further away; I'm afraid of getting sprayed by your spit."
"Cameraman, can you even shoot? If you make me look ugly, I'll have you kicked out of the entertainment industry."
"Props master, do you want to stab me with such a long nail?"
The entire crew grumbled about her, but no one dared to resist.
Director Wang returned from filming every day utterly exhausted. "Forget it; I might as well shoot a short drama. I never want to film a TV series again in my life."
I patted his shoulder. "Cheer up; after all, we've made quite a bit of profit."
That seemed to balance him out a little. Yan Yanfeng bullied everyone on set for a full three months before they finally wrapped up filming.
With two major productions under her belt, she became even more unrestrained in the entertainment industry, showcasing her talents in various ways. Other stars were wary of her due to her powerful background; no one dared to retaliate. For a time, it seemed as if the entertainment world belonged to her.
The new dramas were quickly approved, and both "Phoenix Dance in the Nine Heavens" and "Divine Fire Technique" premiered simultaneously. Yan Yanfeng had contacted the company in advance, preparing for the launch. She bought up all the trending spots, appearing on seven or eight hot searches daily, determined to make herself the new top female star.
Viewers clicked on "Divine Fire Technique" with high expectations, only to be greatly disappointed.
"What the hell? Wasn't this supposed to be filmed on location? Why does it look like it's all green screen and stunt doubles?"
"Weren't they supposed to be skilled actors? Is this it? Just staring blankly?"
"The official announcement looked so stunning; how did the actual show turn out so ugly? The body proportions are off, she's short and awkward—we've been deceived!"
