For many, the night at the Bus Stop is a topic most prefer to avoid. Observant individuals might notice that as midnight approaches, the bus stop becomes eerily empty, as if everyone instinctively distances themselves from it.
Yet at this moment, well past eleven o'clock at night, two young men stand at an unknown Bus Stop, chatting with each other, seemingly waiting for something.
These two young men are Jiang Liu and Wang Chao, who are preparing to head back. Jiang Liu glanced around the dark surroundings of the bus stop and asked, "What are we doing here? Aren't you supposed to take me back to your base?"
"That's right, we are taking you back to the base. We're just waiting for the bus," Wang Chao replied.
"Waiting for the bus? You mean a public bus? It's already late; the buses stopped running ages ago!" Jiang Liu said helplessly.
Wang Chao smiled mysteriously at Jiang Liu's words. "You'll find out soon enough. Let me clarify something first: when someone joins a team, they receive certain privileges.
For instance, an absolutely safe shelter. But this shelter isn't in the real world, nor is it in the Edge World. Instead, it's in another space that can't be reached by ghosts; we call it the Safe House. Since it doesn't belong to the real world, getting there requires some special means of transportation."
Jiang Liu pointed at the bus stop sign and scoffed, "You mean taking a bus in the middle of the night?"
"Exactly," Wang Chao confirmed. "But there are some necessary conditions. Let me test you: what do you think those conditions are?"
Jiang Liu surveyed the dark platform around him. "It should be the platform and time, along with the absence of people nearby."
"Very clever," Wang Chao praised him before continuing. "To return to the Safe House, you must find an empty bus stop close to midnight. Not long after that, you'll see a driverless bus approaching you. All you have to do is get on."
As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang Liu noticed a white bus with no advertisements slowly driving towards them from the left side of the road.
Before long, the bus came to a stop in front of the bus station where the two were standing. Jiang Liu glanced at the bus number displayed on the front and noticed it was an ominous number: 444.
Strange, does the city even have a bus like this?
Jiang Liu murmured to himself and followed Wang Chao onto the bus. Once aboard, he took a quick look at the driver's area and saw that, just as Wang Chao had said, there was no one driving.
Seeing this reminded Jiang Liu of the bus he had taken during the hotel incident, which had also been driverless. He couldn't help but wonder if these two buses were the same.
The bus was completely empty, creating an unsettling atmosphere.
Wang Chao acted casually as he pulled Jiang Liu toward the back seats. Just as they settled in, the bus began to move slowly down the dark road ahead.
During the ride, Jiang Liu suddenly recalled something and asked, "Wang Chao, what did you mean by 'absolutely safe shelter'? Is it really unsafe to live outside?"
Wang Chao turned his gaze from the window and explained, "This involves the scope of real-world supernatural events, which we refer to as domains; you can also call it the Ghost Realm. Unlike the Edge World, the Ghost Realm generally refers to the area affected by real-world supernatural events and their locations.
According to what Dream Sister told me, every supernatural event occurring in reality has a limited range of influence.
For example, take the Classroom Incident we experienced earlier; I suspect its Ghost Realm was confined to our school or each student in Room 000. It's like a curse—if you're within its range, you must abide by its rules.
Returning to our previous topic, since every real-world supernatural event occurs in reality, it sometimes inadvertently affects innocent people. For instance, if a ghost can only operate within one room but due to certain actions by participants, its range expands to encompass an entire building—what happens to those who are not part of that event? To prevent this issue from arising, the Ghost Realm exists."
After listening to Wang Chao's explanation, Jiang Liu suddenly thought of another question and asked, "What if someone accidentally enters the Ghost Realm?"
Wang Chao continued his explanation: "That's when the Ghost Realm comes into play. Its primary functions are twofold: first, it provides us Escapers—those who are meant to participate in supernatural events—with a bit of escape space; second, it prevents ordinary people from getting involved."
“Dream Sister” once shared with me that there were supernatural events she didn’t want everyone to know about, yet they were inescapable for us. Thus, the “Ghost Realm” came into being, a phenomenon that has only emerged in recent years.
“Only in recent years? Was there no such thing as the Ghost Realm before?” Jiang Liu asked.
“It seems not. I remember Dream Sister mentioning this. The emergence of the Ghost Realm is primarily due to an incident over a decade ago. There was a large-scale supernatural event back then, involving hundreds of participants, and almost all of them—no, nearly ninety-nine percent—were ordinary people.”
Jiang Liu gasped in shock. “How could there be so many ordinary people involved?”
Wang Chao stroked his chin in thought. “I heard it was because a team aimed at solving supernatural events revealed their existence on a massive scale to ordinary people, which nearly caused that supernatural event to engulf the entire city.”
Jiang Liu was left speechless, utterly shocked. Wang Chao chuckled at Jiang Liu's astonished expression. “Now you see that not everyone is like you, desperately trying to conceal the existence of supernatural events. You must understand that the longer one survives in such events, the more twisted their psyche becomes. It wouldn’t be surprising if they eventually commit heinous acts.”
“What about the team involved in that incident?”
“They all perished during that event. You must realize that the more people involved in a supernatural event, the greater its difficulty becomes. Reaching the level I just mentioned is almost unsolvable; aside from waiting for death, I can’t think of any other way out.
So now you understand the seriousness of casually revealing the existence of supernatural events and how unfortunate our last incident was.
It started as a purely real supernatural event; who would have thought that a ghost named Xu Ya would disclose the existence of supernatural events to everyone, changing the difficulty? I suspect it wanted us all to die in that incident.”
