Horror Chapter
Both of them knew deep down that the bricks in their hands were practically useless against the potential dangers lurking in the dormitory, yet they provided a sense of security, however minimal.
Gripping their bricks tightly, they stepped cautiously toward the dormitory. The moment they entered the building, a chilling breeze seemed to arise from nowhere, sending shivers down their spines and causing beads of cold sweat to form. Wang Chao felt the eerie wind and nervously glanced around.
As he looked, Wang Chao's brow furrowed. He whispered to Jiang Liu, "Hey, Liu, don't you think this place is way too dark?"
Jiang Liu nodded but remained silent, squinting his eyes in an attempt to see into the depths of the corridor illuminated only by the faint light filtering in from outside. Strangely, it seemed as if the darkness inside the dorm swallowed any light that dared to enter or perhaps even made the light avoid this building altogether. Only a weak glimmer managed to seep through, while the deeper parts of the corridor remained shrouded in thick darkness.
Fortunately, despite the gloom, they could vaguely make out their surroundings within about a meter. After observing for a moment, Jiang Liu whispered to Wang Chao, "The figure you saw was on the sixth floor, right?"
"Yeah, that's right. The third window from the left on the sixth floor."
Jiang Liu's room was located in the middle of the fourth floor, one level below where the shadow had appeared. Although he was eager to know who that fleeting figure was, his priority was to check if Lin Feng had returned to their dorm.
He turned to Wang Chao and said, "Let's check our room first to see if Lin Feng is back. It would be best if he is there; if not..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but Wang Chao understood. He realized what Jiang Liu meant: finding Lin Feng would be ideal; if they couldn't find him in such a large school, their chances of locating him would be slim. In this bizarre environment, being unaccounted for could very well mean a death sentence.
Seeing that Wang Chao didn't respond further, Jiang Liu continued walking toward the other end of the corridor. The layout of their dormitory was somewhat unusual; while it connected to the first floor at the entrance, the staircase leading upstairs was located at the opposite end of the hallway. Jiang Liu had heard his other two roommates mention this oddity before but they never reached any conclusions about it.
The crisp sound of footsteps echoed through the silent and dark corridor.
"Pat-pat."
Suddenly, Jiang Liu stopped dead in his tracks. Wang Chao, who was following closely behind, didn’t notice and bumped into him. Realizing he had collided with something unexpected, Wang Chao almost shouted out in surprise. When he focused his eyes and saw it was Jiang Liu he had run into, he couldn't help but snap irritably, "What are you doing stopping all of a sudden?"
To which Jiang Liu quietly hissed back, "Be quiet!"
Wang Chao didn't catch what Jiang Liu said at first and asked in confusion, "What?"
Jiang Liu glanced at Wang Chao with a hint of helplessness and replied, "Don't talk."
Although Wang Chao was unsure why Jiang Liu suddenly wanted him to be quiet, he closed his mouth and looked at him with questioning eyes, wondering what he intended to do. Jiang Liu ignored the silent inquiry and observed their surroundings with a grim expression. Noticing Jiang Liu's unusual demeanor, Wang Chao also grew tense and began to scan the area like Jiang Liu.
Since they had stopped moving, the echoing sound of footsteps in the corridor faded into an eerie silence. Wang Chao felt that the surrounding quiet was so profound that he could hear his own heart pounding violently.
Those who have never experienced it can never understand how terrifying absolute silence can be; it is a feeling that can drive one mad. Coupled with the dim surroundings, a surge of anger brewed within Wang Chao, threatening to erupt at any moment.
Just as Wang Chao felt he might go insane from the oppressive silence, he noticed Jiang Liu's previously grim expression easing as he relaxed. Realizing it was now okay to speak, Wang Chao suppressed his anger and asked, "What do you want? Why did you stop me from talking earlier?"
Noticing the irritation in Wang Chao's tone, Jiang Liu forced a smile and explained, "I don't know if I misheard something, but I thought I heard another set of footsteps amidst ours."
Wang Chao gasped in surprise, his earlier anger dissipating as he quickly asked, "You can't be serious?"
Jiang Liu shook his head. "I don't know, which is why I wanted you to be quiet. I wanted to see if I really heard something."
Wang Chao recalled the profound silence they had just experienced and questioned, "But I didn't hear any footsteps just now."
Jiang Liu suspected that his own nerves were getting the better of him and didn't want to waste more time on this topic. He shifted the conversation. "Maybe I misheard. Let's keep moving forward."
Due to Jiang Liu's earlier comment, both of them lowered their footsteps again, making their movements nearly inaudible. They walked to the middle of the corridor without hearing any other footsteps, which eased both of their minds somewhat. However, walking quietly was tiring, so they resumed their normal pace, and their footsteps echoed once more in the dim corridor.
"Tap, tap."
A few seconds after their footsteps returned to echoing, Jiang Liu's expression darkened again. At the same time, Wang Chao's face also turned grim because he recognized another set of footsteps distinct from theirs mingling with the echoes.
The sound was faint and intermingled with their own steps, but it was clear that this set of footsteps was entirely different from theirs; upon closer listening, they could easily discern the difference.
The two of them almost stopped in unison, the echoing footsteps fading into silence, and the dimly lit corridor fell back into a deathly quiet.
Wang Chao stared blankly at Jiang Liu as he turned around, momentarily unsure of how to react. After a few seconds, he snapped back to reality and nervously asked, "Did you hear that?"
Jiang Liu nodded with a grim expression, his gaze fixed on Wang Chao. "I heard it."
Just as Wang Chao was about to ask Jiang Liu what they should do, a sudden "thud" broke the silence in the corridor.
It was the sound of footsteps!
Have you ever experienced something like this? When you are home alone, and suddenly hear a sound resembling high heels clicking on the floor above? The footsteps Jiang Liu and Wang Chao were hearing now were just like that.
Moreover, as the sound continued, the footsteps grew more hurried and closer to them.
In an instant, both of them realized where the footsteps were coming from—they were echoing from the dark corridor behind Wang Chao.
Jiang Liu's gaze shifted past Wang Chao, looking into the darkness behind him. Wang Chao stiffly turned his neck little by little to see the source of the sound, but at that moment, he saw Jiang Liu's face turn pale with sheer terror. Then he heard Jiang Liu's terrified shout: "Don't look back! Run!"
Without hesitation, Jiang Liu turned and bolted down the corridor. Hearing Jiang Liu's panicked voice, Wang Chao dared not look back and immediately followed him, sprinting forward with all his might.
