Horror Chapter
The moon tonight was exceptionally bright, casting a silvery veil over the earth, yet to the eyes of the six people, it appeared hauntingly pale, as if the entire world had been reduced to just them.
"Before we go in, let me clarify tonight's mission!" Wang Xing stopped in front of the Haunted Building and turned to the newcomers behind him. "Our task tonight is to find a corpse and bring it out of the Haunted Building before dawn!"
"What! You mean we have to carry a corpse out of the Haunted Building?" One of the two silent newcomers, a boy with black-rimmed glasses, exclaimed in disbelief.
"It might not be a corpse; it could just be a skeleton," Liu Ming interjected bluntly. Ever since he learned that these newcomers had ignored his warnings and shared details about the supernatural events with others, he had developed a strong dislike for them, and his tone reflected that.
"Our primary mission is to locate the corpse first. If we don't even know where it is before dawn, we won't be able to carry it out, and we could be erased by 'it' for failing our task! So I hope that when we enter the Haunted Building, we can split up and not stick together like last time," Wang Xing's good-natured side emerged again as he explained the consequences of failing their mission and his idea of splitting up.
"Why should we split up? The building has seven floors; if we all stay together, we can search the entire place quickly. There's no need to separate!" Zhang Lin disagreed with Wang Xing's plan. To him, this was his first encounter with such terrifying supernatural events, and he had no understanding of their main rules. He felt that if he left the group, he might very well die somewhere in this Haunted Building.
"It seems you still don't fully grasp my mission," Wang Xing sighed and patiently explained. "The task is to find a corpse inside the Haunted Building and leave. However, 'it' hasn't told us where the corpse is located, meaning it could be anywhere within the Haunted Building. If we were to thoroughly search every corner of this place, there simply wouldn't be enough time. That's why I suggested splitting up. Of course, not alone; we'll form three teams with two people each so that everyone can look out for one another."
Zhang Lin thought for a moment and found some merit in Wang Xing's words. Reluctantly, he said, "Alright, I agree with your idea, but I want to team up with Shuangshuang!"
"That's no problem!" Wang Xing agreed to Zhang Lin's request but felt a twinge of regret. From what Zhang Lin had just said, it was clear that he had good qualities compared to the others. Originally, Wang Xing had wanted to team up with Zhang Lin to offer some guidance but hadn’t anticipated how significant Shuangshuang was in his mind.
"Since we've assigned one pair already, Liu Ming and I will each take one newcomer to form two more teams. This way, we can ensure no one slacks off!"
Seeing that the other two newcomers did not object, Wang Xing quickly finalized the last two teams. In the end, they were divided into three groups: Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang in one team; Wang Xing and the boy with black-rimmed glasses in another; and Liu Ming with another quiet boy in the last team.
After the three teams were formed, Wang Xing signaled everyone to enter the Haunted Building.
The moment Zhang Lin stepped into the Haunted Building, he felt a gaze filled with malice watching him from somewhere, causing his body to shiver involuntarily.
At that moment, he regretted agreeing to Wang Xing's suggestion of splitting into three teams. However, Liu Ming and Wang Xing headed straight upstairs upon entering the Haunted Building, leaving no words of explanation for Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang, who remained on the first floor.
Wang Xing believed he had already conveyed everything necessary to these newcomers the night before. Repeating himself would only waste his breath and time. Some things needed to be experienced firsthand for the newcomers to believe them; he had seen too many similar situations! Therefore, one explanation was enough, and whether they believed it or not was no longer his concern. Though he was a nice guy, after going through several supernatural events, he had grown disappointed with these newcomers who were encountering such phenomena for the first time.
“Zhang Lin, I’m scared.”
Shuangshuang tightly clung to Zhang Lin's arm, fear evident in her voice as she looked around at the dark surroundings.
“Don’t be afraid! I’m here with you!”
Zhang Lin felt a bit scared himself, but in front of the girl he liked, he knew he couldn’t show any fear. He forced himself to sound calm as he reassured her, “Let’s hurry and find the body. The sooner we find it, the sooner we can get out of this haunted place!”
“Okay.”
After Shuangshuang responded, she followed Zhang Lin down the dark corridor ahead.
The structure of the corridor resembled that of their school; on the left side were a row of windows through which they could clearly see the scenery outside. On the opposite side were several doors, each flanked by three windows.
As moonlight streamed in through the windows, Zhang Lin tried hard to see into the dark classroom through them. After looking for a while, he realized that there were many blind spots in the classroom that could not be seen from outside; only by entering could they get a clear view of those hidden areas.
“Shuangshuang, did you bring a flashlight?” Zhang Lin asked persistently, hoping to see the classroom's environment clearly.
“I don’t have a flashlight, but my phone has a flashlight function!” Shuangshuang quickly took out her phone, turned on the light, and handed it to Zhang Lin.
Zhang Lin excitedly took the phone and placed it on the windowsill, shining the light into the classroom. She tried several spots but despairingly realized that it was futile. The pitch-black classroom was like a black hole that swallowed light; the beam from her phone couldn't reach all the corners and only illuminated part of the room.
Zhang Lin shared her findings with Shuangshuang, noticing that Shuangshuang also looked somewhat hopeless. With a voice tinged with tears, she said, “Do we really have to go in? Can’t we just look from outside?”
Shaking her head, Zhang Lin explained to Shuangshuang, “Those corners that the light can’t reach might be where the bodies are! If we give up searching those places because of our fear, we might lose our chance of survival!”
With little objection, Shuangshuang, seeing Zhang Lin’s determined gaze, suggested, “Then let’s just open the classroom door and take a quick look before leaving, okay?”
In truth, Zhang Lin was also scared; he didn’t want to enter those eerie classrooms either. But just thinking about Wang Xing’s warning strengthened his resolve. He comforted Shuangshuang with a few words: “Don’t be afraid; no matter what happens, I will protect you!”
Hearing Zhang Lin’s almost confessional words eased Shuangshuang's fear slightly. She tightly grasped Zhang Lin's left hand, signaling that she would stay by his side.
Taking a deep breath, Zhang Lin and Shuangshuang exchanged nods before turning to face the door. He placed his palm on the doorknob and slowly began to turn it.
