Horror Chapter
"I can't really give you a specific explanation about this," Li Lin said with a bitter smile. "It's not just me; the entire group of Escapers probably doesn't know either. However, as I mentioned at the beginning, some things are better left unclear. Just know that in the supernatural events of the real world, no matter how big the incident is, there will be a mysterious force that clears the impact of the event from everyone's minds!"
"That kind of talk is really..."
Jiang Liu was unsure whether to believe Li Lin's words. After all, it was hard for him to accept such a worldview-altering idea all at once.
He could accept that there were supernatural events in this world, and he could accept that they were now in another realm, an Otherworld that wasn't part of reality. But he couldn't accept the notion that there was a mysterious force influencing everyone's thoughts in the real world. Once he accepted that idea, he felt like a puppet on strings, controlled by some unknown existence.
Li Lin noticed Jiang Liu's expression and understood that he wasn't ready to accept this idea yet, so he decided not to press the matter further.
After taking a few puffs from a cigarette, he spoke again: "If you can't accept it, then don't force yourself. In time, you'll slowly discover that this world is far more complex than we see. Don't stress yourself out; focus on resolving this supernatural incident first. There will be plenty of time to think about it later."
Jiang Liu nodded in agreement. The two of them glanced around at the other rooms but found nothing unusual and headed toward the hall.
In the hall, Xu Qian was still comforting Student Sister. As soon as she saw Jiang Liu and Li Lin come out, she asked them, "Did you find anything?"
Li Lin shook his head. "Nothing's changed."
"Really! I truly felt the gaze of that Malice!" Student Sister exclaimed passionately, afraid that Li Lin wouldn't believe her.
"Don't be nervous; we believe what you said!" Xu Qian quickly reassured her and turned to Li Lin. "What should we do now?"
"I don't know, I feel like we're stuck in a dead end!" Li Lin said, his expression a bit annoyed. "We've figured out the ghost's killing restrictions, but we can't determine a way out of this supernatural incident! It feels like we're trapped in some kind of misunderstanding."
"Oh! Right! The mirror! Isn't there a mirror in our bathroom? Could it be that the gaze Li Jing felt is coming from the mirror?" The White-Collar Man suddenly became excited.
Upon hearing this, both Li Lin and Jiang Liu felt a knot tighten in their hearts, realizing that this was not good. The reason they hadn't made this discovery was that there was no evidence to prove the mirror was the way out of this supernatural event, so they had tacitly avoided mentioning it. But now, the White-Collar Man's words made everyone else present react.
The most agitated among them was the Student Sister. She suddenly sat up from Xu Qian's embrace, exclaiming excitedly, "Yes, the mirror! It must have appeared from the mirror; if we just break the mirror, everything will be fine! If we just break the mirror, everything will be fine!"
The Student Sister repeatedly echoed her last sentence as if entranced, abruptly breaking free from her chair and rushing toward the bedroom.
Seeing her like this, Li Lin knew exactly what she intended to do—she was going to smash the mirror. He would not allow her to do that and grabbed her arm. "Calm down for a moment. I know you want to run back and break the mirror, but can you please listen to me first?"
"What do you want me to hear? Should I just wait until nightfall and then get killed by the ghost?" The Student Sister's mental state was on the verge of collapse as she glared at Li Lin with hatred.
Faced with that look of hatred from the Student Sister, Li Lin found it hard to believe that his actions were for everyone's good. Yet now someone was looking at him as if he were an enemy, leaving him feeling disheartened.
"Smack!"
Just as Li Lin felt dejected, a loud slap echoed through the room. He turned to see that Xu Qian had slapped the Student Sister.
Jiang Liu's brain struggled to process what had just happened; Xu Qian, who always appeared gentle and kind, had actually hit someone. The other two newcomers were also taken aback, while Li Lin seemed only mildly surprised, wearing a bitter smile of resignation.
"Don't forget what you said when you got off the bus!" Xu Qian spoke coldly, embodying an icy goddess. "Everything Li Lin and I are doing is aimed at ensuring everyone survives this supernatural event! But I hope you remember one thing: you are still newcomers! You are facing a terrifying supernatural incident for the first time; do you think we wouldn't have thought of what you're thinking?"
Xu Qian glanced at the silent White-Collar Man and Student Sister, feeling that they were nothing but dead weight. If it weren't for Li Lin subtly hinting at her enthusiasm for newcomers, she wouldn't have bothered to give them a good face. She knew all too well that they were survivors of multiple supernatural events; how could their hands possibly remain unstained by blood? In a world like this, those with a kind heart wouldn't last long.
"Never underestimate the experience of seasoned Escapers, and don't overestimate the intelligence of you newcomers!" Xu Qian's gaze shifted to Jiang Liu, as if warning him not to think too highly of himself.
Jiang Liu felt indifferent. He had never overestimated his own intelligence; in fact, he always sensed something off about Xu Qian since their first meeting. However, he had kept quiet until now. Seeing Xu Qian's behavior made him realize that both of them had been putting on a show in front of the newcomers from the very beginning. Yet, he couldn't understand why there was a need to act around them.
"Do you know why Li Lin has never suggested breaking the mirror?" Xu Qian looked at the newcomers with a cold smile. "It's because the hints it gives us are too obvious!"
"Xu Qian, let me explain this to everyone," Li Lin interrupted her. Fortunately, Xu Qian was somewhat receptive to Li Lin's words; she snorted lightly and took a seat, falling silent.
Li Lin sighed as he looked at the other quiet newcomers. "Actually, I thought about breaking the mirror long ago. The reason I didn't bring it up is that I was afraid everyone would act impulsively and break it, leading to unpredictable consequences."
Seeing the disbelief on the faces of White-Collar Man and Student Sister, Li Lin continued helplessly, "You newcomers who haven't experienced multiple supernatural events might not believe this, but I must tell you: every seasoned Escaper facing a situation like this would never choose to smash the mirror!"
"Do you know why?" Li Lin asked the group, but it was clear he wasn't going to let them guess. He continued, "Because I've encountered this situation far too many times! Each time there's such an obvious hint, there are always some newcomers like you who believe it! I'm telling you, it's impossible for us to receive such blatant hints! These kinds of hints often lead to dead ends!"
