Horror Chapter
Jiang Liu was puzzled, unsure of the significance of Li Jian's question. He asked, "Is this question really important?"
"Yes, it's very important," Li Jian replied. "Think back carefully about how you discovered the note."
"I remember. My pocket suddenly started itching, so I reached in to scratch it and found the note there."
"So, if it weren't for that itch, you might not have checked your pocket at all?"
"Yeah, that's quite likely."
"Alright, let's hypothesize. If the note appeared when you got on the bus, it means that the middle-aged woman who got off earlier could also be a ghost! Think about the two people who disappeared earlier—one was dragged outside by a ghost, and the other vanished without a sound. Doesn't that suggest that the ghost got off and then quietly got back on?"
Upon hearing Li Jian's words, Jiang Liu suddenly had clarity about things he couldn't understand before. It turned out that there were hints all along, several hidden clues suggesting the identity of the ghost; he just hadn't noticed them.
Now that everything made sense, Jiang Liu faced a new problem: the note instructed him to find and identify the ghost, but he had already found it. How to identify it was another issue! Should he just confront it directly?
"What’s wrong? Didn’t you figure out the ghost's identity?" Li Jian asked.
"Well, I'm just a bit confused about how to identify the ghost. Should I rely on something? What if confronting it doesn’t work and instead angers the ghost into a killing spree?" Jiang Liu expressed his concerns.
"Don't overthink it. Just confront it directly. Since the note didn’t tell you how to identify the ghost, it means the simplest method is the answer."
Jiang Liu pondered for a moment and felt he might have been overcomplicating things. Just as he was about to reveal the ghost's identity, he suddenly felt that his deductions were too one-sided. However, upon closer inspection, nothing seemed amiss; his intuition told him that Li Jian's hypothesis was not correct. If he confronted it, terrifying consequences awaited him. He closed his eyes and carefully recalled everything that had happened.
[The suddenly appearing note, seeing the ghost Li Ya, Li Jian’s memory being altered, the two missing people… There must be a connection among these events. What exactly have I forgotten?]
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Jiang Liu's mind.
After standing silently in the cabin for a long time, Li Jian could no longer contain himself and urged, "What’s going on? Aren't you going to identify the ghost?"
Hearing Li Jian's words, Jiang Liu opened his eyes and looked at him. "I already know the answer."
"What I told you is the correct answer," Li Jian replied, somewhat confused.
"No, what you told me is wrong. There are no ghosts in the carriage; this is all just a dream of mine!"
"What are you talking about?" Li Jian said, a hint of anger in his voice.
"Don't believe me?" Jiang Liu smiled as he explained. "At first, I didn't believe it either because this dream felt too real. It was so real that I doubted my own thoughts. But I've had dreams before, so I know that when you're dreaming, you don't realize you're dreaming."
Glancing at the few people around them who had suddenly fallen silent, Jiang Liu continued, "In the end, I started to believe your deductions. But then a thought flashed through my mind, and I realized something was off."
"What thought?" Li Jian suddenly quieted down, looking at Jiang Liu with a strange expression.
"Coincidence! Everything is just too coincidental. It's as if whatever I think of happens immediately." Jiang Liu looked into Li Jian's eyes. "I thought of ghosts, and your girlfriend saw one. I thought of darkness, and the bus was engulfed in it. The moment I thought of the Middle-Aged Woman, you encountered exactly what I imagined. It's all too coincidental."
"Later, I thought about dreams, and it occurred to me that only in dreams do our thoughts manifest completely because dreams change with our brains."
"These don't constitute a definitive reason," Li Jian questioned.
"True, they aren't enough to be conclusive. But then I remembered something you said earlier."
"My words?"
"Yes, what you said was actually a hint," Jiang Liu explained to Li Jian. "You can't recall your past memories; that's a clear indication. Only someone dreaming would forget their previous memories."
"Haha, so that's where it was exposed," Li Jian chuckled as he looked at Jiang Liu. "But for a newcomer, your performance is quite impressive. This was just a test; future situations will only get more challenging. That's when it will truly matter!"
"What are you talking about? I don't understand any of this!" Jiang Liu questioned.
The surroundings began to collapse, and Li Jian's figure started to blur until everything faded into darkness. Li Jian didn't respond; he simply smiled at Jiang Liu before slowly disappearing into the shadows.
Opening his eyes, he was greeted by the familiar sight of the car roof. Looking around, he realized he was alone in the vehicle; the driver was absent, and the scenery outside had transformed into something he recognized.
"Indeed, it was just a dream! But why did I have such a dream? Does it signify something?"
“Dear passengers, hello. The next stop is H City Train Station. Please prepare to disembark,” the bus announced, signaling its impending arrival.
"Huh? Have we reached the train station so quickly?"
Jiang Liu was somewhat surprised at how fast they had arrived. Glancing at his phone, he discovered he had actually slept for over half an hour.
"I slept for that long?! What would have happened if I hadn’t found the ghost before reaching the train station?"
This thought inexplicably crossed his mind, but he quickly dismissed it. After all, it was just a dream; why was he still pondering such things? He got off the bus and headed to the ticket counter to collect his ticket, then followed the crowd into the train station, finding a quiet spot in the waiting room to await his train's arrival.
As he observed the bustling waiting area, he suddenly felt a sense of detachment from those around him, as if an invisible membrane separated him from the world. He couldn't understand why he felt this way; it came on so suddenly, seemingly after that dream.
The sensation was vague yet profoundly real. A wave of fear washed over him as he realized he might never return to his previous way of life; significant changes loomed ahead.
Lost in thought, time flew by. Soon it was midnight, and Jiang Liu's train arrived on schedule. Once onboard and settled into his seat, he decided to sleep again to avoid further wandering thoughts.
