Horror Chapter
As the sun set, the sky gradually turned red, and the hot air became much cooler.
A handsome young man stood silently in front of a bus stop, waiting for the arrival of the bus. White earbuds hung from his ears, playing a sorrowful love song, while he idly watched the crowd passing by.
The young man's name was Jiang Liu, from H City. Just a few days ago, he received an acceptance letter from City University. With a mindset of working hard and saving money, he planned to spend the two months of summer vacation working in the city to earn some pocket money and gain some experience. Today marked the first day of his journey; since he had booked a Night Train, Jiang Liu intended to take the last bus to the train station.
Strangely enough, this particular bus service in Jiang Liu's hometown was different from those in other cities; it only operated until around 7 PM and then ceased to carry passengers. This forced him to leave for the train station a bit earlier than usual.
During his high school years, there was an occasion when Jiang Liu missed the last bus due to being distracted by fun activities. In frustration, he called his family to pick him up. On the way home, feeling drowsy, he dozed off in the back seat. In a daze, he thought he saw a bus that shouldn't have been running on the road.
This sudden realization jolted Jiang Liu awake. However, when he fully regained consciousness, that bus had vanished without a trace. He mentioned it to his parents, but they hadn't seen any bus on the road. Eventually, they concluded that Jiang Liu must have been dreaming, and as a child, he didn't dwell on it much afterward.
But today, while waiting for the bus, Jiang Liu inexplicably recalled that incident. A shiver ran down his spine as goosebumps rose all over him. After muttering a few words to himself, he continued to wait.
Gradually, darkness enveloped the surroundings, and the streetlights on both sides flickered on. More people began to appear at the bus stop: a young couple clearly in love, an elderly man with gray hair, and a plainly dressed middle-aged woman quietly waiting for the bus.
Finally, at 7:30 PM, the long-awaited bus appeared in Jiang Liu's line of sight. The glaring headlights made it difficult for him to open his eyes and instinctively made him want to step back from the approaching vehicle. Suppressing this impulse, Jiang Liu was the last one to board.
Once on board, Jiang Liu noticed that there were still a few scattered passengers inside. He casually chose a seat near the window and shifted his gaze outside.
After about four stops, only seven passengers remained on the bus. They included the couple who got on at his stop and an elderly woman. The other three appeared to be students—two boys and one girl—who seemed to know each other well as they whispered back and forth about something unknown. The girl sat quietly at the front of the bus like him, wearing earbuds and listening to music.
As Jiang Liu was lost in thought, he suddenly felt an itch at the pocket of his pants. Instinctively, he scratched a few times, only to realize that there seemed to be something extra inside. He reached in and felt a piece of paper.
Huh? How did a piece of paper suddenly appear in my pocket? I checked before getting on the bus and there was nothing!
He pulled out the paper and saw that it was a smooth, soft white sheet. As he unfolded it, the content made him momentarily lose focus. Written in bright red ink on the white paper were these words:
"Welcome to Hell!
Mission details: On this death bus, a ghost has boarded. Before everyone on the bus dies, you need to find 'it' and identify it. If you identify correctly, the ghost will disappear; if you fail, you will die!
(Since this is your first time being chosen, hints will be provided for this mission. No hints will be given for future missions!)
Mission hint: The ghost entered the bus before the chosen one."
A joke? A prank?
Upon reading the note, such thoughts immediately flashed through Jiang Liu's mind. He looked around, trying to figure out who might be playing a trick on him, but after scanning the area for a while, he found nothing. Instead, he attracted the attention of others in the bus, their gazes filled with a strange curiosity.
Realizing he was acting out of character, Jiang Liu stopped looking around and sat back down in his seat. He crumpled the note tightly in his hand and threw it out of the window.
Who could be behind this prank? Someone managed to silently slip this note into my pocket after I got on the bus. But I distinctly remember that no one touched me when I boarded, and there are so few people on this bus. If someone had come close to me, I would have noticed! Yet no one has approached me until now!
Jiang Liu felt trapped in a loop, unable to come up with any conclusions. Unless he truly encountered a ghost, that would explain how the note could have been placed in his pocket without him noticing. But if he really did encounter a ghost, why would it give him such a note? Moreover, this was the first time he had heard of identifying a ghost as a way to eliminate it!
"Ah! There's a ghost!"
Just as Jiang Liu was pondering who was playing tricks, a terrified scream came from the back of the carriage. Everyone inside turned to look, and Jiang Liu was startled by the sound. He turned to see it was the girl from the couple who had been flirting earlier.
Seeing everyone staring at her, the girl hurriedly hid behind her boyfriend, continuously letting out frightened sounds.
"Li Jian, there's a ghost! It saw me!"
"Don't be afraid, babe. There are no ghosts!" The boy named Li Jian kept reassuring the girl in his arms while apologizing to the other passengers. "I'm sorry, everyone. My girlfriend is a bit jumpy; she might have had a nightmare."
Upon hearing the boy's explanation, the other passengers shrugged it off and returned to their own activities. Only Jiang Liu, who had received a note, continued to quietly observe the couple. The carriage was unusually quiet due to the small number of people, allowing him to clearly hear the girl's intermittent sobs. He couldn't make out what she whispered to her boyfriend, but he noticed Li Jian's expression change as he said, "Show me what you wrote."
The girl then took out her phone and began typing, which made Jiang Liu anxious. Although he dismissed the note as someone's prank and didn't believe in ghosts, the coincidence was unsettling—he had just received a note, and now a girl claimed to have seen a ghost. This made Jiang Liu feel uneasy.
Since the couple was sitting behind him, he couldn't see what the girl was typing and could only gauge the situation by watching Li Jian's expression. However, it seemed that nothing related to ghosts ever ended well.
