On the way home, I kept pondering who could have given Wang Kun such a sinister idea. This person must understand some metaphysical techniques, yet they seem to lack a clear grasp of Karma. In fact, such individuals are quite pitiful; they unknowingly create significant trouble for themselves and only realize it when retribution finally arrives, leaving them filled with regret.
As I thought about this, a particular person came to mind—the Master Wang I had encountered recently, the disciple of Master Chen. However, Master Chen had already retired, so there would be no further exchanges regarding Daoist Techniques between them. I suspected that Master Wang was likely in a dire situation now that Master Chen was no longer involved in this field; without his protection, retribution would come swiftly.
To confirm my thoughts, I decided to call Master Wang. Firstly, I wanted to check on his well-being; secondly, I hoped to see if he knew Wang Kun. After all, they were both part of the same social circles and might have crossed paths. Moreover, a few months ago, when Master Chen was still active, he might have shared some of those sinister Feng Shui methods with Master Wang, who could then use them to deceive others. Among the several masters in Guangzhou, only Master Chen would be capable of such actions.
The phone rang for quite a while before Master Wang finally answered. By the way, Master Wang's real name is Wang Peng, so I'll just refer to him as Wang Peng.
When Wang Peng picked up the phone, his voice was very faint, almost as if he were in pain. He sounded weak and clearly unwell.
I said, "Master Wang, things haven't been going well for you lately, have they?"
This greeting left him silent for a long time. I didn’t hang up; I waited for his response.
After a moment of silence, he slowly said, "Brother Liu, can you help me?"
"No one can help you. You reap what you sow; you must bear the consequences of your own actions. Let me ask you something—if you're willing to answer, please do; if not, that's fine," I replied.
Without any hesitation, Wang Peng said, "Ask away, Brother Liu. I will tell you everything I know."
I nodded and asked, "Do you know Wang Kun?"
"Wang Kun? Brother Liu, which Wang Kun are you talking about? I know several," Wang Peng replied slowly, his tone punctuated by pauses and evident distress.
I stated directly, "The one who was arrested for strangling a woman."
Those in their circles must have their own networks; when something explosive happens—like someone being strangled and arrested—everyone would likely be aware of it.
"Cough cough cough... I know that person. He brought this upon himself. Instead of living a good life, he chose to kill someone. I really don't understand what he was thinking... cough cough..." As he spoke, Wang Peng began to cough violently; it sounded serious. I realized that continuing our conversation would be difficult. With a sigh, I asked if he was at home.
He confirmed that he was at home. I turned my car around and headed toward his place while letting him know that I would come by to see him and chat face-to-face.
I actually decided to go to his house because I was afraid he might encounter some kind of retaliation from the Spirit God. If that were the case, I could help him while inquiring about Wang Kun. Although he deserved it, in my opinion, punishing him by preventing a Spirit God from descending into Reincarnation was ultimately a loss.
When I arrived at Wang Peng's building, a young girl opened the door for me. His roommate had already moved out. The girl claimed to be Wang Peng's girlfriend and explained that he had contracted a strange illness and didn’t have the money to see a major hospital. He had visited many small clinics without any improvement. She seemed quite innocent, and honestly, I felt that Wang Peng was somewhat mismatched with her, like a flower growing in cow dung.
When I saw Wang Peng, he was lying on the bed, his face covered in rashes, with many red patches on his hands. He looked very weak, leaning helplessly against the headboard. His symptoms didn’t seem to be related to any spirit haunting; it was purely an illness—one that I felt powerless to address. This illness had clearly come upon him as a consequence of his past actions.
Upon seeing me enter, Wang Peng struggled to sit up. I said, “It’s alright, just lie down. To be honest, in your current state, I can’t help you much. My main purpose here is to inquire about Wang Kun. As I said before, if you’re willing to talk, then talk; if not, there’s no pressure.”
Wang Peng nodded, indicating that I could ask.
I got straight to the point and said seriously, “Did you instruct Wang Kun to nail his father’s skeleton to the wall?”
Wang Peng's eyes widened slightly at my question, and finally, he stared at me and said, “Did that old man run away?”
“Just as I thought—it’s you. You deserve this illness. It hasn’t been long since you got it, has it?” I mocked him. After Old Wang's soul was freed, it seemed that Wang Peng had suffered backlash from Old Wang's Yin Qi. Those Soul Binding Talismans must have come from Wang Peng himself because they looked like they were used for trapping souls; however, the technique appeared to be that of a novice talisman master, which aligned perfectly with Wang Peng's situation.
From Wang Peng's response, it was clear he didn’t realize that his illness was caused by Old Wang's backlash. Using such sinister methods to trap souls usually results in backlash for anyone without sufficient skill.
“Yes, it was me,” Wang Peng admitted with regret filling his eyes. “Brother Liu, I was really short on cash; is my illness related to that incident?”
In my previous judgment, like Officer Luo’s, I had assumed that the person who taught Wang Kun those sinister methods and the one who later tore down the talismans on the wall were the same individual. However, now I no longer believed that because Wang Peng clearly had no idea that the talismans had been torn down; not only did he not know this fact but he also worried about those talismans being removed. Even he didn’t realize that once Old Wang was freed, he would retaliate against him.
So it turned out that Wang Peng wasn’t the one who tore down those talismans in Wang Kun’s house.
I nodded without directly answering him and instead asked a question for Officer Luo: “Do you know if Wang Kun has any drug-dealing accomplices?”
“Is he still selling drugs? We were somewhat familiar; how could I not know?” Wang Peng asked in confusion.
I suddenly understood why Officer Luo and his team were having such a hard time; it seemed that Wang Kun and his accomplices were keeping their drug dealings very secretive.
“Do you have much contact with him? How well do you know this person?” I continued questioning.
Wang Peng nodded slightly and said slowly, "Actually, it's not much. It's just occasionally exchanging information about the underworld and some women. When there's nothing going on, we drink and sing together. He’s a wealthy guy and generous with his friends in the underworld, often inviting people out for food and drinks late at night. That's why the brothers like dealing with him; they don't have to spend their own money. However..."
At this point, Wang Peng began to cough violently. The girl beside him quickly brought over a bowl of herbal medicine she had prepared. He merely glanced at her without taking the bowl, his eyes filled with disdain—whether for the medicine or the girl, it was unclear.
But regardless of which it was, it was none of my business. I continued to ask, "However, what?"
Wang Peng cleared his throat and continued, "Before I gave him that harmful method, he was already acting strangely, as if he had some psychological issues. I shared that method out of brotherly loyalty; at that time, my master said it would be bad for me, but out of loyalty to my friend and because I really needed the money, I told him about it. I never expected that this method would be so dangerous and leave me in this state. Cough cough..." The master he referred to was Master Chen.
"You have to take responsibility for your actions. Since you're here, you can only endure it. Rest well; this illness won't kill you but will make you suffer for a long time. I'm leaving now." As I turned around, I noticed the girl quietly standing by the bed. I added to Wang Peng, "You should be grateful to those who care for you. Don't do anything immoral in the future. People must learn to be grateful and have a kind heart; only then will your illness improve faster."
Wang Peng nodded slightly and thanked me.
I turned to leave, and the girl accompanied me to the entrance downstairs. She softly thanked me as well. I looked at her and smiled, saying, "If you don't owe him anything, there's no need to stay and serve him; it's not worth it."
She merely nodded slightly before turning back upstairs. I thought little of it; everyone has their own values and choices. Even if I didn't understand them, I couldn't impose my views.
Just as I opened the car door, my phone rang—it was Officer Luo calling. He got straight to the point: "I've received news that the person who suggested that crazy idea to Wang Kun is likely a thug named Wang Peng. But it hasn't been confirmed yet. I've heard he has a Taoist master and isn't exactly upright; do you know him? I'm heading to his house now to verify."
I replied casually, "Officer Luo, don’t bother coming over. I just left that kid's place; he already admitted that the crazy idea was his, but tearing up the talismans wasn’t him—it was someone else."
"Ah, you've already left? Did you teach that brat a lesson?" Officer Luo said indignantly.
"He’s already contracted some strange illness; heaven is punishing him now—he's living in misery. I didn’t expect that breaking the formation in that small room would have such severe backlash on him." I drove away from Wang Peng's place heading home.
Officer Luo laughed heartily and said, "That's good; he deserves it! Then I won’t go over there. But who tore down those talismans at Wang Kun's house?"
I replied, "I don’t know. You should check the community registration information and surveillance tomorrow; maybe you'll find something out. That’s all for now, Officer Luo."
"Okay, I'll call you when there's news." Officer Luo hung up, and I focused on driving while yawning repeatedly.
On the third day, Officer Luo called me and said, "After some investigation and inquiries, we have identified three individuals. Upon investigation, these people are familiar with Wang Kun. However, it's strange that none of them have a criminal record; they aren't social delinquents and all have legitimate jobs."
"Were these people brought to the station?" I asked.
Officer Luo replied, "Not yet. We don't have that authority. We approached them one by one; we found two of them, but one is currently on a business trip and isn't in Guangzhou. I heard he will return this afternoon. If you’re free, you can come with me to check it out. The other two seem fine; it might be this one who has issues."
"Okay, I'll go with you to take a look since I have nothing planned for the afternoon. Where should I meet you?" I said.
Officer Luo responded, "Since he didn't take his phone on the trip, I couldn't contact him directly. I reached out to his workplace instead, and they said he would stop by the office after returning from his trip this afternoon. Let's wait for him at his company. I'll send you the address; just head over there around three o'clock. By the way, his supervisor mentioned that another person is also looking for him and is already waiting at the company."
I asked, "Who?"
"I don't know. See you in the afternoon," Officer Luo hung up.
