Hearing it speak filled me with joy; if it could talk, things would be much easier. It seemed that the Obsession had truly been lifted.
The words "Thank you" startled Officer Luo, who stared incredulously at the Spirit God and muttered, "Wow, it really can talk."
After lighting the incense, I asked, "Elder, how did you end up here?"
It slowly leaned closer to the Incense, inhaling deeply the smoke produced by its burning. It replied, "I was trapped in this place by my unfilial son using cruel methods. However, I managed to get him imprisoned. I only regret that girl; it was never my intention to harm her. I just wanted revenge on that ungrateful son. I want to make his life miserable."
Upon hearing this from the Spirit God, both Officer Luo and I were taken aback. So it was indeed Wang Kun's father who caused Shao Xiaohuai's death.
"Elder, why did you do this? That girl is innocent, but continuing down this path won't lead to a good outcome for you either. What’s the point?" I sighed.
Officer Luo wanted to interject but found it difficult to find the right words. He was conflicted, wanting to uphold the law, yet facing a Spirit God, making it impossible for him to suggest arresting it.
Old Wang sighed and began telling us a story.
Wang Kun had actually performed well in school as a child, but after graduating from Junior High School, his family could no longer afford to send him to school. Feeling resentful, he started mingling with the wrong crowd and indulged in all sorts of vices—drinking, gambling, and more. His family couldn't control him; whenever they confronted him, he would blame his father for not sending him to high school. By the time Wang Kun turned 25, he had fallen into drug addiction.
His family was poor and couldn't afford his drug habit. Unable to earn money himself, he repeatedly pressured his family for cash. They sold everything they could, even resorting to selling his mother's jade bracelet—a dowry piece. While the bracelet wasn't worth much monetarily, it held significant sentimental value for his mother as it was the only item left to her from her own mother. She refused to let him sell it.
However, when Wang Kun craved drugs, he disregarded everything else. He forcibly tried to take the bracelet from her, and despite his parents' attempts to stop him, they were powerless. In desperation, his mother knelt and clung tightly to his leg, refusing to let him leave. Ignoring her pleas, he rained blows upon her head without a shred of humanity.
His mother was already in poor health; after enduring such a beating from him, she died right there. His father couldn't stand by any longer and picked up a pole to confront him. But how could an elderly man compete with a young man? In a fit of rage and madness, Wang Kun snatched the pole from his father and struck his legs mercilessly until he broke his father's right leg, leaving him disabled for life.
Wang Kun knew that things had escalated, so he fled from Fujian to Guangzhou, cutting off all contact with his family, let alone arranging for his mother's funeral. Old Wang harbored resentment towards Wang Kun, but his wife had always spoiled their son, so Old Wang never reported the incident. It was only three years later, when Old Wang fell gravely ill, that Wang Kun returned to handle the funeral arrangements. He didn't come back out of filial piety; he was there to prepare to sell the old family house. Their home in the countryside wasn't worth much, but the land had a good foundation, and he intended to make money from it.
Little did he know that when he returned, Old Wang was still alive and would not pass away anytime soon. In fact, Old Wang was somewhat pleased that his son had come home for his final journey. However, he didn't want to stay at home for long; he was there to make money. As long as Old Wang was alive, he would have to wait. In a cruel twist of fate, Wang Kun suffocated Old Wang to death. Not only did he kill him, but he also neglected to hold a proper funeral. The elders in the village insisted on conducting a funeral; otherwise, they warned that Old Wang's spirit would haunt them.
Wang Kun found it too troublesome; this beast didn't even want to deal with Old Wang's corpse and just wanted to grab the money and return to Guangzhou quickly. Yet, he feared that Old Wang's spirit would linger on. Somehow, this beast managed to dig a pit, lay down a layer of lime inside it, and then tossed Old Wang's corpse into the pit. He drove seven long jujube wood nails through Old Wang's limbs and body directly into the pit before covering it with dirt. Old Wang's corpse was hastily buried without even a mound or gravestone.
After being suffocated by Wang Kun, Old Wang developed a deep obsession. He felt no love for his son anymore; only hatred remained. However, since Wang Kun was filled with malice and Old Wang was now a new soul, he couldn't do anything to him. He didn't report to the Underworld but instead followed Wang Kun closely, seeking revenge on this unfilial son.
After taking the money from selling the house's foundation, Wang Kun returned to Guangzhou while Old Wang continued to follow him but could do nothing about it. After some time passed, Old Wang was no longer a new soul in the Underworld; however, his abilities were still limited. He could occasionally make Wang Kun feel his presence but couldn't do much else.
Once back in Guangzhou with the money from the house's foundation, Wang Kun sought connections to join a drug trafficking organization. He bought drugs at low prices and sold them at high prices to addicts. Gradually, his life improved significantly while Old Wang waited patiently for an opportunity for revenge.
Last year, Wang Kun was arrested for drug use but was released after two or three months for reasons unknown. He worked cautiously afterward because he felt something sinister about his arrest and sensed Old Wang's lingering spirit around him. Consequently, he sought out a genuine charlatan for help. This charlatan claimed that Wang Kun's bad luck stemmed from poor feng shui at his father's grave and suggested that he return home to relocate Old Wang's remains.
Wang Kun was unwilling and asked if there were any simpler methods for a permanent solution. He also knew that if only Old Wang's grave had bad feng shui, he shouldn't still be seeing his father's spirit occasionally. The charlatan pretended to be profound and said there was indeed a method but that it involved great sin if revealed. Ultimately, after giving the charlatan a large sum of money, he received an idea: dig up Old Wang's skeleton and keep it at home nailed down with an iron sword; this would securely lock away Old Wang's soul. The charlatan also provided several talismans meant to assist in binding the soul.
Wang Kun had committed too many sins and feared the consequences; without hesitation, he followed the charlatan's advice. He returned home, dug up Old Wang's skeleton piece by piece, brought it back to Guangzhou, and nailed it in this small room according to the charlatan’s instructions. The charlatan also said that for long-term effectiveness, they needed to infuse it with plenty of Yang Qi.
How could Yang Qi be added? He instructed Wang Kun to buy seven live roosters and hang them upside down on the wall before smashing their heads with a hammer until they died. Afterward, he should catch their blood and splatter it on the wall before placing the roosters' corpses alongside Old Wang's skeleton. This way, they could use the roosters' malice to suppress Old Wang's soul while allowing the roosters' spirits to peck away at Old Wang's soul.
I had never heard of such barbaric methods before, yet they truly seemed effective; Old Wang’s spirit could no longer escape this small room. However, there was no mention of any rooster spirits pecking at Old Wang.
As I listened intently, I squatted down and picked up several talismans from the ground; they were indeed used for trapping souls. Officer Luo listened along and remarked on how despicable this creature was—Wang Kun truly wasn't worth anything; such a person deserved to die hundreds of times over.
I carefully examined the talismans labeled Trapped Soul in my hand and immediately noticed something was off. Those talismans were originally nailed to the wall with iron nails, so they shouldn't have fallen off naturally. Looking at the tear on the paper, it was clear that someone had ripped them off directly. Old Wang didn't have the strength to tear the talismans, and since the room was locked, could it be that Wang Kun had torn them off himself?
I voiced my confusion, and Old Wang shook his head, saying, "It wasn't me who tore them off, nor was it Wang Kun. He can't do that. The talismans were ripped off by a stranger. Just a few nights ago, in the middle of the night, someone suddenly opened this door and tore down all the talismans from the wall, including those on the door."
