The situation had been clarified, and I no longer felt the need to maintain the Soul Calling Array. I dismantled the formation, and Mr. Chen returned to the copper mirror. As I stepped out of the study, I never expected that what I thought would be a simple Ghostly Affair had turned into such a hassle. The ugly side of humanity was something I was reluctant to touch, but now that things had reached this point, I had no choice but to resolve it.
I wanted to share this with Sister Su; after all, she was my Victim. Although these matters were not particularly honorable, she had the right to know. Just as I was about to pick up the phone to call Sister Su, it rang suddenly. Looking at the caller ID, it was Miss Liu.
I hurriedly answered the phone and softly said, "Hello?"
"Hello, Daoist. He drank a lot today and started acting crazy when he got home. He just fell asleep now. I found a moment to call you; we haven't finished discussing tonight's events. Let me tell you what happened next, and see if you can help me," her voice was quiet but clear.
"Miss Liu, you don't need to explain further; I have a rough idea of what's going on. Now tell me two things: First, how old is Sun Ming? Second, do you know which sect he belongs to?" I quickly replied. I wanted to know Sun Ming's exact age because Mr. Chen mentioned twenty years ago, and according to Miss Liu's information, she was over twenty.
Initially, I was skeptical of Miss Liu's words, but after getting a specific timeline from Mr. Chen, it confirmed that Miss Liu was telling the truth. Since that was the case, the key to this matter lay with Sun Ming.
"He’s younger than me; he’s not yet twenty. But I don’t know which sect he belongs to. Daoist, what should I do?" Miss Liu's voice remained soft.
I said, "Alright, I understand now. Is there anyone else at your home or just the two of you?"
"It's just the two of us; we recently bought the house. He goes out every day and has never brought any friends back," Miss Liu said before suddenly hanging up. It seemed Sun Ming had caused some commotion or had woken up.
Putting away my phone, I lost interest in calling Sister Su. One reason was that it was too late; I might not be able to reach her anyway. The other reason was that now knowing Sun Ming was drunk and there was no one else at home presented an opportunity. Such matters are best dealt with promptly; Sun Ming could control spirits, so caution was necessary. After invoking the Five Spirits for possession and placing them in my Cloth Bag, I headed toward Miss Liu's house.
On the way, I sent a text message to Miss Liu with just a few words: "Arriving in half an hour."
Before long, she replied with a simple "Okay." Seeing that response made me press harder on the accelerator as I sped toward my destination.
Fortunately, I had Miss Liu's address and phone number, and the security guard did not hinder me. As I approached Miss Liu's door, I sent her a message to let her know I had arrived. However, I did not receive an immediate reply, which left me puzzled. When I reached her doorstep, I heard a lot of commotion inside, including Miss Liu's frightened whimpering and the sound of something crashing to the floor.
"You wretched woman, you've received so much from me. Have I ever wronged you? Yet you conspire with outsiders to expose me. Just wait; I'll show you how that so-called Taoist you mentioned is toyed with by me. Hmph, Taoists—there aren't that many in this world." The speaker's voice was loud, but it was muffled from outside. The soundproofing of this house was indeed top-notch.
I hesitated before pressing the doorbell. Taking out my compass, I examined it closely; there was indeed a ghost inside. However, I couldn't determine its distance or strength. I set down my Cloth Bag and crouched down to arrange a formation. No matter what, I needed to summon the Five-Color Lord first. Although I wasn't afraid of a single ghost, there was also a young man involved. If he and the ghost teamed up against me, I couldn't guarantee my safety.
In just a few minutes, I successfully summoned the Five-Color Lord. It appeared as imposing as ever and immediately sensed the ghost inside, wanting to rush in at once. However, the people inside were knowledgeable about supernatural matters; they must have defenses in place. I quickly recited an incantation to hold back the Five-Color Lord. Since that Sun Ming wanted to toy with me, he would naturally open the door himself. His arrogant tone suggested he believed himself invincible.
I pressed the doorbell, and an angry voice came from inside: "Bastard! You finally made it! I've told you not to meddle in my affairs." Hearing his voice grow closer made my heart race; I had never seen Sun Ming before. If he turned out to be as burly as Master Xiao, I might not stand a chance against him—especially since he had been drinking. I've heard that people who drink don't feel pain when they fight.
With a loud "bang," the door swung open. A person appeared at about my height; it must be Sun Ming. He wasn't much more muscular than me, which gave me some confidence. Upon seeing me and the Five Spirits beside me, he gasped "Five Chaotic Spirits!" before quickly trying to shut the door again. But by then, it was too late; there was no way I'd let him close it. I rushed forward and slammed into the door while simultaneously issuing a command to the Five-Color Lord to catch the ghost.
Sun Ming's sudden decision to close the door met my prepared charge head-on; there was no need for guessing what happened next. With a loud crash, I burst through the door. At that moment, the Five-Color Lord, who had been eager to enter, darted inside as soon as the door opened. Sun Ming fell to the ground from my impact, but I didn't pay him any mind and followed in the wake of the Five-Color Lord. I had no idea how powerful the ghost inside was; if it turned out to be stronger than the Five-Color Lord, it could injure him—and compensating for that would give me a headache. Plus, I didn't know if there were any defenses on that door.
The Five-Color Lord entered without hesitation and headed straight for an inner room while I closely followed behind. Sun Ming got back up and chased after me.
With another loud crash, the Five-Color Lord slammed into a door that clearly bore a talisman. I arrived just in time to rip off that talisman and twist open the door, revealing what lay beyond.
It was a spacious bedroom with a large bed that seemed somewhat empty despite its size. Next to a dressing table by the bed sat a chair where Miss Liu was bound with her face pale as she struggled desperately; above her floated a Long-Haired Spirit, hanging upside down from the ceiling with its hair cascading over Miss Liu's head as she cried out in fear.
The Five-Color Lord, having regained its composure after seeing me open the door, rushed inside upon spotting the hanging Long-Haired Spirit. Although its expression remained blank, its body trembled with excitement as it floated toward it.
Upon seeing the Five Spirits, the Long-Haired Spirit immediately shifted from its upside-down position to standing upright in midair before opening its mouth and attempting to flee. However, given that this was merely a bedroom, they could only chase each other around in circles within it. Seeing this calmed my nerves; at least I knew that the Five-Color Lord wouldn't be at a disadvantage against this spirit god.
Just as I was certain that the Five-Color Lord would not suffer any loss, a sudden force pushed me from behind. Sun Ming kicked me hard from behind, the impact landing squarely on my back. I lost my balance and stumbled forward, crashing into the wardrobe with a loud thud. For a moment, the world spun around me, and I saw stars. Quickly, I turned to face Sun Ming.
Without pausing, Sun Ming stepped up to me and raised his fist, aiming for my face.
I had fought before and believed I had some talent for it. If I could endure being hit without retaliating, then that wouldn't be me at all. Anger surged within me; as he charged at me, I clenched my fist and prepared to meet him head-on.
