Sister Su was a businesswoman who deeply understood the principle that one must invest to reap rewards. Although I was merely a Little Taoist, this was my means of livelihood, so I considered myself a businessman as well. Naturally, I was pleased to deal with a Victim who could actively propose a Reward. I quoted a price and added that if travel outside the area was required, additional fees would apply. Without hesitation, Sister Su agreed.
In truth, my price wasn't particularly high, but it wasn't low either. However, for someone from her affluent background, it should have seemed quite reasonable.
After we settled on the price, I said, "Sister Su, I need the girl's name, phone number, and address."
Sister Su replied, "No problem. I have her detailed information; however, it's in the office. I'll send it to you tomorrow. It's just that... Master Liu said not to harm her. If you go looking for that girl, will it affect his Reincarnation?"
A wise person is indeed wise; she thought things through thoroughly. I smiled and stood up, saying, "First of all, I'm not going to harm that girl; I'm going to help her. Secondly, if I don't go looking for her, Mr. Chen will still disappear. It's getting late, Sister Su; I need to head back. You should get some rest."
Sister Su also stood up and extended her right hand, saying, "Thank you, Master Liu. If you need any assistance, feel free to call me."
Sister Su escorted me to the door and asked at the threshold, "There aren't any strange things happening at our place anymore, right?"
I reassured her, "Don't worry; absolutely none. Thank you for the coffee. Goodbye."
"Goodbye."
By the time I returned home, it was nearly one o'clock. I settled Mr. Chen's soul and took a quick shower before preparing for bed. Lying in bed, I tossed and turned without being able to sleep. I wondered what kind of person that girl was; with such cunningness, I questioned whether my aura could handle her presence. According to Sister Su, this girl had previously appeared before Mr. Chen with different men. Goodness! Could she be involved with the underworld? If things didn't go well and I got beaten up by a crowd, it would be a loss indeed. But then again, thinking about it further, Sister Su was wealthy; she would likely help me if a fight broke out. Being a local with such a successful business, she shouldn't fear a little girl too much. With that thought in mind, I felt much more at ease and soon fell asleep.
In my dream, I found myself leading a group of small-time thugs against a girl whose face I couldn't clearly see but who also had her own gang with her. As soon as we met eyes, we pointed at each other and shouted in unison: "Kill them!" It felt like a scene straight out of a gangster movie. Eventually, everyone on the other side lay groaning on the ground while that girl clasped her fists together and said, "Spare me! I've lost this round; I'll go lift the Yin Curse right away."
This dream must have started around dawn because after it ended, I woke up just in time. Rubbing my slightly swollen head and recalling the dream made me chuckle bitterly inside; beneath my honest and handsome exterior lay a heart that craved violence and dominance.
I glanced at the clock across from my bed—it was already seven in the morning. Hurriedly getting out of bed to wash up and change clothes, I rushed downstairs for breakfast and even went for a run. Perhaps because of that dream whetting my appetite for action, I lingered longer than usual; normally I woke up promptly at six-thirty.
By the time I finished everything it was eight o'clock. Back home, I checked my messages from Sister Su—she had sent over the information about the girl. Her surname was Liu as well and she lived in Tianhe District. Not only did she provide a phone number and address but also details like height, weight, blood type—even her hobbies were listed! Perhaps this information was pulled from company records.
After completing my morning rituals, I began considering how to approach this girl since we were complete strangers and I knew nothing about her at all. This posed quite a challenge for me; if only I were more eloquent like a salesperson—then perhaps I'd have fewer worries.
Unable to find a good reason to contact her otherwise, I decided to be straightforward about it without sugarcoating anything. If this Miss Liu truly intended to harm Mr. Chen's Soul Shattered state without any hesitation on her part, then I'd have no choice but to seek help from my master.
When the call connected without any issues or disconnections—just an ordinary line—I let out a sigh of relief.
"Hello," a hoarse yet gentle female voice came from the other end.
"Hi, is this Miss Liu?"
"Yes, may I ask who you are?"
"I'm a friend of Mr. Chen. I wanted to discuss something with you. Don't worry, I'm not here to cause any trouble. I'm a Taoist, and I've been sent by his wife to help resolve the Yin Curse you've placed on Mr. Chen's soul." I spoke in a calm tone, trying to make a good impression.
After I finished speaking, there was silence on the line; she didn't respond or hang up. I continued, "Can I come visit you?" Still no response, but I heard her cough twice. Perhaps it was inconvenient for her to answer.
I tried again, "Is it inconvenient for you to answer? If so, please cough once."
Sure enough, she coughed again. I quickly understood the situation and said, "Then please text me a time and place." After that, I fell silent, only to hear a vague male voice from her end: "Who called?"
Miss Liu replied, "No one, just an insurance company. I don't know how they got my number..." After that, the call abruptly ended; it seemed Miss Liu had hung up.
After hanging up, I felt puzzled. Logically speaking, Miss Liu should be living comfortably after receiving a large inheritance. Why did her tone convey such helplessness? Who was that male voice that seemed to have authority over her?
More than half an hour later, my phone beeped with a text message. Opening it revealed that it was indeed from Miss Liu, containing just a few short words: 8 PM tonight, café downstairs at my place. White dress.
The message had an ambiguous tone; without the current situation, it could easily be mistaken for a date invitation. I pulled up the message from Sister Su and carefully checked the address. After searching online for quite some time and confirming that there was indeed a café at her location, I finally felt relieved. I prepared to meet this girl who had caused so much turmoil yet seemed to have her own secrets.
At 6 PM that evening, after finishing dinner, I drove toward Miss Liu's residence in Tianhe District. It was quite far from where I lived, and with traffic in the city being what it was, I had to leave early. Just as I expected, once I entered the city area, traffic became congested. By the time I reached Miss Liu's place, it was nearly 8 PM.
After parking my car, I walked directly into the café. As soon as I entered, I spotted a girl in a sleeveless white dress standing at the entrance; she looked exceptionally delicate. Approaching her, I greeted her: "Hello, are you Miss Liu?"
"You must be Mr. Chen's friend," Miss Liu said with a puzzled look on her face as if she found it hard to believe because of our significant age difference.
"Yes, that's right. Shall we find a seat?" I replied.
She found a spot towards the back, a secluded booth that was the most hidden place in the café. After sitting down, she ordered a cup of coffee for herself. I spoke up, "Miss Liu, you seem unwell; your complexion is pale and your Yintang looks gray. Have you been in contact with spirits lately?" I said this because I had noticed marks on her arm where it rested against the back of the seat when she was looking for a place to sit. Although the marks were faint, I was certain they were from a ghost. However, I couldn't say it outright, lest she think I was staring.
Surprised by my question, she replied, "How did you know?"
"I told you before, I'm a Taoist priest. Miss Liu, I want to ask you, now that Mr. Chen is dead, why are you still cursing his soul in the Underworld? Don't you know this will cause his soul to shatter and prevent him from ever being reincarnated?" Without much small talk, I went straight to the point.
She lowered her head in thought for a moment. Just as she was about to respond, the server brought over her coffee. She paused and sweetly thanked the server. Once the server left, her expression began to darken as she said, "Actually, I feel very sorry for him. Ever since I heard about his death, I've been restless. He was a good person—at least he is now."
"At least he is now? What did he do to hurt you in the past that makes you treat him this way? Besides, he's already dead; why can't you let him go? This is quite cruel of you. Can you tell me why Mr. Chen was so infatuated with you?" I couldn't help but start questioning her. What kind of grudge could lead someone to torment another like this? Moreover, I couldn't understand why Mr. Chen had fallen for this girl so deeply. In my eyes, while she had some charm, she certainly wasn't captivating enough to make someone like Mr. Chen—who had lived for over forty years—abandon everything for her.
"Because he said I look just like his first love..." Miss Liu said softly.
"What?" I was at a loss for words. I'd heard of such pick-up lines from youngsters before, but Mr. Chen was over forty years old and had a fulfilling family life with a career and children. I really couldn't believe he would abandon his family for such a reason or excuse.
