Knowing it was the Blood Curse, it was easy to deduce who had cast it. It was either related to Sister Su or that girl. Based on the timeline, Mr. Chen must have had a falling out with Sister Su within the twenty-one days leading up to his death, making cohabitation impossible. Therefore, it was highly likely that the girl was involved.
Chen Chen still wanted to rush towards Mr. Chen's floating soul, but Sister Su held him back tightly, not allowing him to get close. From Sister Su's expression, it was clear that her initial shock had faded; her trembling body was slowly calming down. However, she remained silent, unable to overcome the emotional barrier within her heart.
Mr. Chen looked apologetically at Sister Su and smiled at Chen Chen like a loving father. I said to Sister Su, "Let go of Chen Chen; it's okay. He has the red string I gave him."
Sister Su made no response but released her grip on Chen Chen. He joyfully dashed toward Mr. Chen. Chen Chen moved quickly, and when he reached Mr. Chen, a fleeting expression of pain crossed Mr. Chen's face, quickly replaced by a smile that seemed to struggle against the weight of the moment.
"Dad, why can't I feel your coldness anymore? It feels like we're back in the past," Chen Chen looked up at Mr. Chen.
Mr. Chen smiled and said, "It's because that uncle brought you the red string; Dad's Yin Qi can no longer affect you. This is a good thing for you; thank that uncle." Mr. Chen's complexion grew increasingly pale, and the smile on his face began to fade away. I knew he was reaching his limit. After enduring the effects of the Yin Curse and the talismans, he had little Yin Qi left to maintain his physical form.
"Thank you, uncle," Chen Chen said before looking back at Mr. Chen and asking, "Does this mean Dad can come back to keep me company at night again?"
Mr. Chen continued to force a smile but neither nodded nor shook his head. It was a promise he could not fulfill but did not want to break his child's heart, so he remained silent for a long time. As I noticed his figure beginning to flicker, I said, "Chen Chen, your dad is tired and needs to rest now; let him go. If you keep holding onto him like this, he will disappear and never come back."
Upon hearing this, Chen Chen quickly released his hold on Mr. Chen and returned to Sister Su's side. Throughout this exchange, Sister Su had remained silent.
I took out a bronze mirror and placed it at Mr. Chen's feet.
"Mr. Chen, you know your situation well now; just attach yourself to this mirror when you're ready. I also need you to tell me where that girl lives," I said while watching Mr. Chen slowly becoming transparent.
"She... I'm sorry; I can't tell you. Please don't go looking for her; this is all fate," Mr. Chen replied before gradually dissipating into the air.
I was accustomed to such departures by now; even Chen Chen seemed unfazed by it, though Sister Su covered her mouth in surprise once more. I picked up the bronze mirror and confirmed that Mr. Chen had indeed entered it before putting it away. This mirror had been unearthed from an ancient tomb; its interior was rich in Yin Qi, allowing Mr. Chen to remain safe from the encroaching Yin Curse for a time while providing some nourishment for spirits as well.
As I placed the copper mirror back into the Cloth Bag, Sister Su finally regained her composure and said, "Heavens, what kind of world is this?"
I chuckled lightly and replied, "If you can't accept it, you can think of it as a magic trick of mine. But we still have things to do. The situation is like this: Mr. Chen's soul has been afflicted by a Yin Curse. If I don't intervene, it will slowly be consumed until there is no chance of Reincarnation left."
Sister Su slowly sat down on the bed and asked, "Can people really Reincarnate after death? What does it mean if they can't?"
I explained, "It means they will disappear forever. It's like a bowl of water left under the sun; it evaporates into vapor and eventually merges into clouds. When the clouds become heavy enough, they release rain, which is one cycle of Reincarnation for water—it doesn't truly disappear. However, if someone drinks that water and uses it for energy through movement, then part of that water is absorbed by the Human Body and transformed into kinetic energy, leading to its complete disappearance. Mr. Chen was supposed to be reborn as a human, but because someone placed a Yin Curse on him, it will gradually consume his Yin Qi, preventing him from being reborn—essentially making him disappear."
I used an analogy that I hoped would be easier for Sister Su to understand. After listening, she nodded and asked, "So how can we give him another chance at rebirth?"
"It's simple," I said. "We need to find the person who cast the Underworld curse, lift the Yin Curse, and then I can help him move on. He would then be able to continue his Reincarnation. However, I suspect that the person who cast the Underworld curse is that girl. I'm not sure if Sister Su can find her." I simplified the situation; in reality, lifting the Yin Curse was not easy for me alone. It required the caster to undo it personally. If it were that simple, they wouldn't have cast the curse in the first place.
The reason I said it was simple was partly because I feared Sister Su might harbor resentment and refuse to entrust me with this task. Additionally, if things became too difficult, I could always seek help from my master; just because I couldn't lift the Yin Curse didn't mean no one could.
Upon hearing that I could help, Sister Su quickly asked, "Master Liu, do you really think that girl is the one who cast the Underworld curse? I have all her information. Please help ensure he doesn't disappear."
I replied, "It's highly likely she is involved, Sister Su. Don't you still resent her?" I refrained from asking whether she had been intimate with Mr. Chen during the twenty-one days before his death—one reason being that her expression when Mr. Chen's spirit appeared revealed her truthfulness; another reason was that if she were indeed guilty, she wouldn't have come to me for assistance.
"I don't resent her anymore," Sister Su murmured. "After all these years together as husband and wife, he has already passed on. Given our history as a couple, I naturally hope he can leave in peace." With that, Sister Su stood up and took Chen Chen by the hand as they exited the bedroom toward the living room.
I tidied up my things and followed them into the living room. Sister Su asked if I preferred tea or coffee; I chose coffee without sugar. She poured two cups from a steaming coffee machine and headed toward the balcony.
Outside the living room was a large terrace adorned with various potted plants and a big sunshade umbrella. Beneath it sat a stylish bamboo table set that looked both modern and elegant.
Sister Su placed the coffee on the table and pressed a button on the wall; the large sunshade automatically retracted, leaving an open space above us. Wealthy people really do have their own way of creating ambiance.
Sister Su pointed to a spot and said, "Please sit." After I took my seat, she followed and sat down in the chair across from me. Once seated, she looked up at the dark starry sky and said, "I've heard that when people die, they become a star in the sky, watching over their loved ones. Is that true?"
I took a sip of the bitter coffee and also glanced at the sky, chuckling lightly as I replied, "That's just something poets and relationship experts dream up; it shouldn't be taken seriously. Even if it were true, here in Guangzhou, it wouldn't be possible to watch over anyone because the smog is just too heavy and thick. Forget about watching over someone; it's hard enough to even catch a glimpse."
"Haha," Sister Su lowered her head and fell silent, simply picking up her coffee to drink.
From the living room came Chen Chen's voice: "Mom, I'm tired. I'm going to take a shower and sleep."
Sister Su responded, "Go ahead." Then she suddenly looked at me and asked, "He isn't still in Chen Chen's room, is he?"
I pointed to my Cloth Bag on the chair next to me and said, "No, he's right here. I brought him back tonight to keep at home. Once the Yin Curse is lifted, I'll take him over so he can see Chen Chen one last time."
Sister Su set down her coffee and said, "Thank you, Little Master Liu. If you need any help, just let me know. How do you usually charge for your services?"
