The figure before me, He Si, was a fake; I had already confirmed this in my heart. However, hearing Zhou Zhen mention it stirred something within me.
What surprised me even more was that Zhou Zhen and the others had found He Si so quickly.
Upon hearing about the He Si I encountered, Zhou Zhen expressed great astonishment. Perhaps a sense of unease crept into his heart as he asked me what was going on.
At that moment, it was not something that could be explained in just a few words over the phone. So, I kept it brief and told him that I had run into Mingyue and that I would be safe with her around.
Zhou Zhen then asked for my current location, saying he would come to pick me up with Anfu. I couldn't help but chuckle bitterly because I didn't even know where I was myself, so I could only tell them to wait for me at the hotel.
After hanging up, I turned my gaze back to Mingyue and the fake He Si. Their battle was still ongoing.
It was clear that the fake He Si did not want to continue the fight and was gradually falling into an absolute disadvantage. While defending against Mingyue's attacks, he darkly said, "We are of the same lineage; why do you have to ruin my plans?"
Mingyue snorted coldly but ignored him, her attacks relentless as she pressed forward.
Eventually, the fake He Si let out an angry grunt. After blocking one of Mingyue's kicks, he rolled away and fled.
Watching him disappear, I quickly shouted to Mingyue, who stood still, "Don't let him get away! You need to chase him!"
Upon hearing this, her cold and proud face turned toward me, giving me a frosty glare. I immediately stopped shouting and awkwardly said, "Uh, thanks for saving me."
She ignored my words and coldly replied, "Come with me."
With that, Mingyue turned back in the direction from which I had come. I frowned slightly at the direction before following her.
As I walked alongside Mingyue, I occasionally glanced back over my shoulder, fearing that the fake He Si might suddenly appear beside me again. With this thought in mind, I quickened my pace until I was walking side by side with Mingyue.
She glanced at me, her expression still cold and proud, before looking ahead again.
I awkwardly smiled and couldn't help but ask, "Mingyue, how did you end up here?"
She walked straight ahead without looking at me, coldly replying, "It's nothing. I just happened to run into you, so I followed."
Just happened to run into me? That seems a bit too coincidental.
I was momentarily speechless at Mingyue's response. However, curiosity got the better of me, and I asked, "By the way, that person from earlier was incredibly strong and could almost match you in a fight. Do you know who he is?"
"Unloading Gate," Mingyue replied lightly. "He should be from my lineage, but as for who he is, I don't know."
Her words startled me once again, causing me to pause slightly.
Although I had already learned from Gu Chen that Mingyue was a descendant of the Exiled Ridge Lineage, that had only been speculation. Now, with her own admission, it was as if she confirmed her identity as part of the Exiled Ridge Lineage.
What surprised me even more was that the fake He Si was also a descendant of the Exiled Ridge Lineage. No wonder he was so formidable.
We walked in silence; mainly because Mingyue's demeanor was too cold. After a few attempts to engage her in conversation that went ignored, I decided to stop talking altogether. Soon enough, we arrived in the city.
At that moment, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Although Mingyue had saved me earlier, I still felt a twinge of unease towards her.
This unease stemmed from the Demon King's Cauldron within me.
Since Mingyue was a descendant of the Exiled Ridge Lineage, she must have knowledge of some unpredictable Demon techniques. If she were to take an interest in me, with her skills, I wouldn't stand a chance at all.
However, it seemed that she bore no ill will towards me at the moment.
Looking around at my surroundings, I realized where I was. Just a short distance ahead was the road to the hotel. I turned to Mingyue and smiled awkwardly, saying, "That beautiful lady, I'm almost there. Where are you planning to go?"
Without lifting her head, she replied, "I'm taking you back. Someone has their eye on you; otherwise, it would be dangerous."
At her words, I was taken aback and couldn't help but glance around, my expression changing as I stammered, "Y-you mean someone is watching me?"
She nodded without elaborating, simply coldly stating, "Lead the way."
I took a deep breath to steady myself and silently nodded before leading her toward the hotel.
When we arrived at the hotel, Zhou Zhen, Gu Chen, Xiao Juan, and Anfu were all in the same room, looking anxious as they waited for me. Xiao Juan, in particular, seemed restless; she paced back and forth like an ant on a hot pan.
As soon as she saw me walk in, she rushed over and pushed me hard, exclaiming angrily, "You idiot Lin Hao! Where have you been? Do you know everyone has been worried about you?"
I felt a bit speechless but understood from Xiao Juan's expression that she cared. So I explained, "I ran into He Si while I was out buying cigarettes and chased after him."
"He Si? He Si is lying right here," Xiao Juan said as she pointed to someone lying on the bed.
I looked over and saw that the person under the covers with just their head exposed was indeed He Si.
After I had connected with Zhou Zhen earlier, I had already informed him that I encountered He Si. They were aware of this, so their expressions appeared somewhat grave. When Gu Chen noticed Mingyue walking in behind me, he looked up and said lightly, "Thank you for saving him earlier, Miss Mingyue."
Though simple, it was still a gesture of gratitude.
Mingyue nodded without saying anything. At that moment, Xiao Juan's gaze turned hostile as she coldly huffed and pointed at her while shouting at me, "Who is this woman?"
I felt utterly speechless and quickly swatted Xiao Juan's hand away. I knew that this woman was not someone to be trifled with; if Xiao Juan provoked her, there would definitely be trouble ahead.
So I quickly explained, "I met her in Shandong, just a few times. Today, she saved me."
Xiao Juan clearly didn't believe it and was about to press further when Gu Chen coldly interjected, "Alright, Xiao Juan, enough of this."
Only then did Xiao Juan relent. Gu Chen turned his gaze to Mingyue and frowned, asking, "Miss Mingyue, can you tell what that fake He Si is up to?"
"An Unloading Gate warrior, from the same lineage as me," Mingyue replied coldly.
"Unloading Gate."
Upon hearing this, both Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen furrowed their brows slightly.
Xiao Juan, however, seemed oblivious to the gravity of the situation and gasped in disbelief at Mingyue, "You are from Unloading Gate?"
Mingyue shot her a glance but ignored her. I nodded at Xiao Juan, who immediately shrank back. I figured she must know about Unloading Gate and understood the weight of that lineage.
Thinking back to how she had spoken to Mingyue earlier made me feel a twinge of fear.
After a brief pause, Gu Chen asked again, "Do you know her?"
Mingyue shook her head. "I don't know her."
At this, Gu Chen chose not to say more. I looked at He Si lying on the bed and frowned as I asked, "Master, what happened to Fourth Brother?"
Gu Chen glanced at him with a detached expression and said, "A few ribs are broken, multiple fractures all over his body—his hands are particularly bad. He has already fallen into a coma."
"What? How could he be so severely injured?"
Upon hearing this, I couldn't help but express my disbelief.
Gu Chen remained silent, while Zhou Zhen couldn't resist glancing at Mingyue before saying, "We suspect he might have encountered someone from the Unloading Gate. Otherwise, as Senior Gu mentioned, with his skills, he wouldn't be in such a sorry state."
Unloading Gate, once again.
I instinctively glanced at Mingyue beside me; she also came from the Unloading Gate. The fake He Si we encountered earlier was from the Unloading Gate as well, and now this real He Si was likely injured by someone from the same organization.
We are both from the Exiled Ridge Lineage, but why did Mingyue choose to save me just now?
This question puzzled me even more. What could the Unloading Gate, an organization I had never encountered before, possibly want with us?
He Si was injured while searching for Mu Yan. So, was their goal related to Mu Yan or to the Demon King's Cauldron within me?
There was no way to know.
I recommend a book from the same site: Maoshan Exorcist. It's a great read. After finishing Yin Wife, if you have some free time, you might want to check it out; it's more engaging than mine.
