The people who found us were none other than the Xie Team, the very ones who had led the charge to capture us that morning. At that time, I, Gu Chen, Zhou Zhen, and Anfu were locked in another shed.
I felt a bit drowsy and soon fell asleep. Anfu sat there with his eyes half-closed, likely dozing off as well. Only Zhou Zhen and Gu Chen remained awake, sitting on the makeshift wooden bed with serious expressions as they gazed outside.
However, the main door of the shed was tightly covered with wooden planks, so even though their eyes were directed outward, they could see nothing.
When that team leader surnamed Xie found us, he was terrified, completely shedding his earlier commanding demeanor. He lowered his posture significantly, almost begging us to go take a look.
The terrifying and bizarre deaths of those people seemed to have convinced Gu Chen to some extent; otherwise, he wouldn't have come to plead with us.
Although Gu Chen was angry, he didn't say much. After all, saving lives was the priority. With the Dried Corpse and Bronze Sword having mysteriously disappeared, if we left things unchecked, who knew what else might happen or how many more lives could be lost?
So he merely snorted coldly and then extended his hand, signaling for the team leader surnamed Xie to unlock the handcuffs binding us.
Seeing this, the team leader dared not hesitate. Without a word, he apologized repeatedly while hurriedly unlocking our cuffs.
Then Gu Chen let out a cold snort and said in an icy tone, "Take me to see the dead bodies and the shed where you placed the Dried Corpses."
"Yes, yes, Master Gu, right this way," the team leader replied eagerly while nodding repeatedly. He opened the main door of the shed and awkwardly invited us outside with a forced smile that looked worse than crying.
It was no surprise; after so many people had died in such a horrifying and bizarre manner, it would indeed be strange if he could genuinely smile.
As we walked, Gu Chen asked how many people had died. The team leader replied that including the two experts studying the Dried Corpses in the shed, a total of thirteen people had died.
In addition to the two experts, there were six workers and five police officers present.
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen fell silent for a moment, not speaking, but his expression was far from pleasant.
Following Captain Xie, we first arrived at the shed where the Dried Corpse had been placed. The Dried Corpse and the Bronze Sword had vanished without a trace.
Looking at the empty table before us, Captain Xie pointed and said, "That Dried Corpse was originally placed right here."
As he spoke, I could see that his face was exceptionally pale, filled with panic and fear.
Once inside, Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen began surveying the area of the shed while Anfu and I stood to the side. Anfu seemed indifferent to everything around him; he only acted when Gu Chen instructed him to do something.
I, on the other hand, felt completely lost, only sensing that those who had died must be connected to the Dried Corpse.
What was even more bizarre was that the Dried Corpse had quietly disappeared without a sound.
Could it be that the Dried Corpse had stood up by itself, killed someone, and then fled?
The thought startled me, but I didn’t doubt it. After all, I had witnessed enough strange occurrences during this time; even if the Dried Corpse really did rise up to kill someone and then run away, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.
Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen were both staring intently at the spot where the Dried Corpse had been placed. I couldn’t make sense of it; I merely frowned slightly, feeling puzzled.
I turned my gaze toward Gu Chen and asked about the table before us, "Master, why has this board turned black?"
Gu Chen's expression seemed serious as he furrowed his brow slightly and replied, "The board has turned black because the Yin Qi within that Dried Corpse is too heavy; the corpse's energy has seeped into the wood, causing it to change color."
I nodded slightly and then voiced my earlier suspicion, "Could it really be that the Dried Corpse killed these people and then ran away?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Chen remained silent, while Captain Xie’s gaze immediately turned to Gu Chen. It was clear that alongside his fear, he was also filled with confusion.
Seeing that Gu Chen did not respond, Zhou Zhen finally nodded and said, "Senior Gu warned you before, telling you either to burn the Dried Corpse or to seal it in a coffin and bury it intact. Yet you insisted on ignoring that advice and wanted to study it instead. Now that you've been killed by it, you brought this upon yourselves."
Zhou Zhen's words, though somewhat off-topic and tinged with blame, served as the best proof of the situation.
I was relatively unfazed because I had already entertained such thoughts in my mind, and after everything that had happened during this time, it was easy to accept.
However, Captain Xie was different; his expression changed dramatically as he stammered in disbelief, "Is there really such a thing as ghosts in this world? Are there Zombies?"
"Yes, there are ghosts and Zombies."
Captain Xie's words prompted a cold laugh from Gu Chen, but he chose not to engage further.
Zhou Zhen shot him a glare and said, "There are indeed ghosts and Zombies, but there are also many things you don’t know about—perhaps even we don’t know."
"You don’t know either?"
Zhou Zhen's statement made Captain Xie's face turn even paler, his disbelief growing stronger. Even I furrowed my brows slightly at his words.
If there were indeed things that neither Zhou Zhen nor Gu Chen knew about, what could they possibly be?
At that moment, Gu Chen suddenly interrupted, saying, "Let's go. Take me to see the dead."
Captain Xie nodded repeatedly upon hearing this, not thinking much more about it, and then led us to another shed.
Inside the shed, there were a dozen corpses scattered haphazardly, exactly thirteen in total, and their bodies were separated from their heads.
I didn’t dare to look, but Gu Chen and Zhou Zhen carefully examined each corpse. In the end, they concluded that these bodies were likely decapitated by the Dried Corpse using a Bronze Sword.
As for where the Dried Corpse had gone now, Gu Chen frowned slightly and then looked out into the pitch-black night, saying, “Zhou Zhen, you and Anfu stay here and keep an eye on things. I’ll go out for a bit.”
“Senior Gu, where are you going?” Zhou Zhen immediately asked.
Gu Chen replied calmly, “I’m going to check the place where the Dried Corpse was buried.”
Upon hearing this, Zhou Zhen nodded and said, “With Senior Gu’s abilities, there shouldn’t be any problems. I’ll stay here then.”
I quickly asked, “Master, what about me?”
Gu Chen glanced at me and said, “You’re coming with me.”
“I’m coming with you?”
I felt a bit speechless and said, “But Master, I don’t know anything. I think you should take Anfu with you; at least his skills are not weak and he can help you.”
Hearing this, Gu Chen shot me a stern look and said seriously, “Precisely because you don’t know anything is why I need to take you along. Only by staying close to me at all times, growing in danger and maturing through hardship will you be able to achieve something in the future. Otherwise, you might just end up embarrassing me, Gu Chen.”
I was instantly left speechless by Gu Chen’s words but felt somewhat awkward. However, deep down I understood that what he said was true.
A person who does not experience the trials and tribulations of life, who does not endure hardships, will never grow up and will never mature.
Although I have taken Gu Chen as my master, and perhaps he can help me solve problems while he is around, there will come a day when he will leave me. I cannot live under his protection forever. Therefore, the path ahead must rely on myself. I need to gain enough experience and strength to become powerful. Only then, when that day comes, will I be able to protect myself and others.
I nodded heavily and said, "Yes, Master, I understand."
"Mm."
Gu Chen nodded lightly and then said to Anfu, "Anfu, go get my Money Sword."
Anfu responded affirmatively and ran out. The place where we lived in the workshop was adjacent to where Chen Sheng and the others worked, so Anfu quickly brought back Gu Chen's Money Sword.
Then I left the workshop with Gu Chen, moving toward the direction of the ancient tomb under the night sky.
This is the first update. Additionally, it is important that character names are appropriate; avoid strange or awkward names that do not fit. When submitting a name, please leave it at the bottom of the character list and do not create separate comments for it. Otherwise, it will quickly get buried, and I won't be able to see it or remember it. If I miss anything, it would be unfortunate.
