Chapter 178: New Grudges and Old Hatreds
"What?" Xiao Wei's voice changed pitch, nearly throwing the little boy away in shock.
Jin Bo, unaware of who Huihui was referring to, couldn't help but murmur, "Your social circle is really wide."
Ming Junwei restrained the incoherent Xiao Wei and frowned, "Are you saying... that the White Company Commander is dressed like us?"
Huihui nodded, and the woman who had her throat slit chimed in, "That's right! I thought we were saved, but who knew their hearts were so dark!" Realizing she had let slip her true feelings, the woman hurriedly stepped back.
Wheat suddenly jumped down from Ming Junwei's back and rushed toward the airtight chamber where Cao Liang and Luci's bodies were stored. Jin Bo was about to call out to her when he suddenly understood Wheat's intention and excitedly followed after her. The three women who had "come back to life" were urging Ming Junwei to take them to find the person behind the experiments. However, Ming Junwei and Xiao Wei had no time to deal with them. The White Company Commander? Who else could it be but Bai Yudong? But why was Bai Yudong here? Dressed in Security uniforms? Had he been tailing everyone all along, lurking for an opportunity to rescue them? That seemed unlikely.
"The Vice Commander isn't dead..." Xiao Wei murmured.
"Do you know where he took Song Yao?" Ming Junwei asked.
The three women exchanged glances and shook their heads in unison.
Ming Junwei's gaze fell on the card Luci had given him, and then he recalled the blood-written words on the ground. He hurried over to examine it, tracing the blood patterns with his hand until he suddenly realized something.
"Qianqian wrote 'Bai, Song.' She wanted to remind us," Ming Junwei said, rubbing his temples before looking up to see Jin Bo walking out of the airtight chamber with a dejected expression.
"Why? Why can they do this?" Jin Bo was somewhat angry; Luci and Cao Liang showed no signs of revival as before. A few minutes later, Wheat also left the airtight chamber. The little girl no longer held onto any fantasies and collected herself to leave with Ming Junwei and the others down the corridor.
As for the three women, Xiao Wei intended to kill them. They certainly couldn't take three half-dead individuals with them to find someone, but letting them leave freely would likely expose Bai Yudong. Although it was still unclear what role Bai Yudong played, Song Yao was in his hands, so they needed to cover for him. Ming Junwei couldn't deny this but found it difficult to act; he didn't know how to categorize the three women—were they injured living people or revived dead ones? Jin Bo had just been stunned by their presence; he looked at them with a hint of fear in his eyes, let alone thinking about killing them.
Thus, the most resolute Xiao Wei played the villain for a moment, luring the three women into the operating room and swinging the gun butt towards their heads. Outside, a few people only heard muffled thuds and short screams; when they looked again, Xiao Wei emerged holding the gun.
"Are they dead?" Jin Bo's eyes widened in disbelief.
"No, just knocked out," Xiao Wei replied as he wiped off the gun butt. He felt uneasy; during the ambush, he worried that if he failed to knock them out in one blow, they would notice him. So he put in some effort but wasn't sure if the three women were truly dead or not. In any case, Ming Junwei and his group did not plan to stay here long; as long as they weren't affected for a while, that was enough.
The group retraced their steps, walking and stopping intermittently, finally returning to the Elevator Passage. Six Security personnel had been stationed in the corridor, armed with rifles and watching every person who approached.
"Shall we try another route?" Xiao Wei suggested, knowing that there was more than one Elevator Passage on each floor. When they arrived, this place had been empty, but now it was clearly manned.
"They're probably all the same. Just relax; it should be fine," Ming Junwei replied, taking a deep breath and moving forward alongside Wheat. The other troublemakers followed suit without a change in expression, striding toward the open Elevator. As they reached the entrance, a nearby Security officer spoke up, "Access code required."
Wheat hid half of her face behind her long hair, pulled out Summer Rain's badge, shook it slightly, and walked straight into the Elevator. Ming Junwei and the others let out a sigh of relief and were about to step forward when they were stopped. Only Jin Bo was ignored; the Security personnel stepped aside to indicate he could enter.
"Huh?" Xiao Wei raised an eyebrow, wondering what that meant.
"What about you two?" the Stubbled Man grunted impatiently.
Ming Junwei had no idea what the access code was and was exchanging glances with Jin Bo to plan a sneak attack when Xiao Wei suddenly nudged him and said, "I’m carrying an injured person; it’s inconvenient. Use yours." He winked and glanced at the Stubbled Man's left chest. Ming Junwei paused for a moment before realizing what he meant. He quickly fished out the card that Luci had left him. The Stubbled Man's eyes twitched; although his expression showed some hesitation, he did not obstruct them further.
The Elevator doors began to close slowly. Ming Junwei noticed that the Stubbled Man leaned closer to his short-range radio and said something while keeping his gaze fixed on them.
"Shall we go up three floors?" Jin Bo asked, his finger hovering over the floor buttons. Just a few minutes ago, they had come down from the third floor; going back up now... At this rate, their clothes wouldn't hold up much longer.
Wheat took Luci's card and compared it with Summer Rain's badge before pressing the "0" button. The floor buttons lit up, and the mosaic electronic screen displayed the word "power." Wheat placed Summer Rain's badge against it; a beeping sound followed, and the letters changed to "x."
"Damn," Jin Bo couldn't help but curse under his breath. "If only Air Raid Shelter had something like this."
As soon as he finished speaking, the Elevator doors opened again.
"What’s going on?" Xiao Wei asked nervously.
"Probably just like an elevator—no floor selected," Ming Junwei replied quietly, glancing sideways at the approaching Stubbled Man.
The Stubbled Man leaned against one side, casting a glance at the silent group before grunting, "Why aren’t you moving?"
"Let's go, let's go." Wheat tucked the nameplate of Summer Rain into his pocket. Once the cabin door closed, he pressed the "o" level again and then printed Luci's card.
This time, there was no sound. The external mechanisms clicked, and the Elevator began to ascend.
A few of them let out a sigh of relief, their tense nerves finally easing a bit.
"That guard is suspicious of us," Ming Junwei said, rubbing his jaw, feeling a familiar dull pain in his injured wrist.
"What about Song Yao? And Aso and Dong Dong? They still don't know where we are," Xiao Wei said, and An Zheng on his back let out a grunt, as if moving slightly.
"Let's go up and take a look. If we can get out, we need to settle Dr. An and the child first." Too many unexpected events had occurred; Ming Junwei couldn't believe it would be so easy to leave. Noticing An Zheng stirring, he hurried over and asked, "Dr. An? Can you hear me?" An Zheng blinked his eyelashes as if he heard Ming Junwei's call but offered no other response.
"Hey? Why did it stop?" Jin Bo keenly sensed that the Elevator was no longer ascending. Before he could finish speaking, the cabin door opened again, revealing a noisy scene outside that was completely different from what they had encountered below.
The group was taken aback and quickly halted their conversation. Wheat pointed at the floor buttons in confusion; the number had stopped at "-2."
Outside the cabin was another Elevator-exclusive passageway, but much wider this time. Personnel in white lab coats and protective suits filled both sides, ignoring the few stunned individuals inside the Elevator. They were chattering away, their faces still showing signs of shock.
"Close the door and let's go," Jin Bo said when he saw that no one was paying attention to them, signaling Wheat to make a quick escape.
Just as he spoke, someone peeked out from beside the door.
