Chapter 138: An Unforgettable Night 0

That night, Chao Yifan and Jiang He perfectly embodied the meaning of "brothers in adversity." The former was cornered by three fervent women eager for children in the Cave Dwelling, while the latter remained blissfully asleep. 0

The fire in the small house had nearly gone out; Jiang He hadn’t added much wood before bed. The flickering flames danced and struggled, casting a strange silhouette on the slightly worn walls—three animals wrapped in blankets. Unbeknownst to them, the blanket had slipped, leaving a cat and a dog covered while poor Jiang He lay exposed in the middle. 0

The three sleeping creatures had no idea that at this moment, the Wheat Field had transformed into a battlefield for Zombies. Less than a hundred meters from the cottage, a dark horde of Zombies was slowly advancing toward it. The vast Wheat Field was trampled into dust by the approaching horde, making the little cottage appear like a toy against the backdrop of the overwhelming mass. 0

The Zombies moved slowly, but their collective advance was spectacular. It was nighttime, and this horde appeared as mere shadows; if it were daytime, this scene could easily be borrowed by Zhang Yimou to film "Curse of the Golden Armor," saving a fortune on extras. 0

No one knew where such a large-scale Zombie outbreak had originated. At least Jiang He hadn’t noticed any signs of Zombies during his daytime reconnaissance. The terrain here was relatively flat with no significant elevations; distant mountains were faintly visible, far apart from each other, and those peaks didn’t seem like crowded areas. Thus, the sudden appearance of this horde of Zombies seemed quite strange—they appeared to have descended upon this place without any warning. Centered around the cottage, the Wheat Field occupied most of the area within a five-mile radius, and the nearby woods at the crossroads were sparse enough that they clearly couldn’t conceal so many Zombies. 0

At this moment, discussing the reason for the Zombies' appearance felt somewhat inappropriate; after all, someone had yet to realize that disaster was looming over him. The small house lit by firelight echoed with Jiang He ’s deep snores, while Tabby Cat perked up her ears and suddenly opened her bright green eyes. 0

At that same moment, in a small grove adjacent to the Wheat Field, three figures were sprinting frantically toward what seemed to be the cottage. The three figures varied in height and carried no lighting tools; they ran intermittently, clearly struggling. 0

“Wait… I can’t run anymore,” said the figure at the back as she stopped to catch her breath. By her voice, it was clear she was a girl. 0

The two ahead quickly turned back to help her up as she continued to jog weakly. The figure on the left was a slender male who stood slightly taller than the others and gasped, “Just hold on a bit longer; we’re almost there.” 0

“I really can’t go on… why don’t you two just go?” Though supported by them, the girl in the middle felt as weak as a noodle and couldn’t muster any strength. 0

“Hang in there; we can’t stop now! We’re racing against Zombies!” encouraged the girl on the right, though she too was drenched in sweat. 0

The three of them paused to catch their breath, the forest around them eerily quiet, as if they were the only three living beings in existence. 0

"Brother Bear, do you think that guy has already left?" The girl among them collapsed onto the ground, wiping her sweat with her hand and unbuttoning a few buttons to fan herself, her chest rising and falling with each labored breath. 0

"I don't think so. I peeked for a bit; he took some Wheat Straw back with him, probably planning to stay overnight," the boy known as Brother Bear swallowed hard, awkwardly turning his face away. From his angle, he could see the girl's fair neckline, but she was too exhausted to notice. 0

"Weiwei, don’t rest now; if you do, you really won’t be able to run anymore." The girl on the right forced herself to stand up and reached out to pull the collapsed girl back up. 0

"Yin Nuo is right; we’re not far now. We’ll be there in five minutes at most!" Brother Bear stood up as well, just about to speak when he caught sight of a stumbling figure emerging from the woods. His scalp tingled with alarm as he quickly pulled the two girls behind him and drew a short stick from his waist, rushing forward. The two girls were startled but regained their composure as Brother Bear charged ahead, each drawing their own self-defense weapons and scanning their surroundings. 0

The figure looked somewhat frail, but its movements were still decent. As Brother Bear sprinted towards it, he shouted and swung his stick. The lone Zombie didn’t dodge; it took a hit to the head from Brother Bear's strike and staggered before falling to the ground. Before it could get back up, Brother Bear leaped onto it, using both hands to jab downwards with the stick. There was a sickening crunch as the short stick shattered the Zombie's eye socket and plunged deep inside. 0

"Ugh!" A glint of excitement flashed in Big Bear Brother's eyes as he withdrew his stick and stood up, a slight smirk on his lips as he muttered, "That wasn’t so hard." 0

"Run! Run! Be careful not to attract other Zombies!" Weiwei, who had been limp just moments ago, instantly regained her energy and nervously scanned their surroundings before they all took off running again. 0

"By the way, how are we going to talk to him later? What if he doesn’t want to take us with him?" Weiwei had forgotten her earlier fatigue and began chattering again as they ran. She had been talking non-stop while running earlier and ended up gasping for breath; now that she felt better, she was back to her old habit of talking too much. 0

"We’ll negotiate; we did save his life after all. What’s wrong with hitching a ride?" Brother Bear was full of confidence, thumping his chest loudly. "Leave it to me." 0

"Bragging! Why didn’t you just talk to him directly this afternoon? Yin Nuo said you ran like you were being chased by a dog," Weiwei scoffed, her long ponytail bouncing up and down as she ran, occasionally getting strands stuck to her sweaty face. 0

Big Bear Brother's face flushed red as he mumbled, "It was too rushed back then... I meant to go in and say hello, but his dog came charging out first..." 0

"Did you really get chased back by a dog?!" Weiwei exclaimed, clearly disappointed. "I think we just made a wasted trip. You're just eager to find your girlfriend, aren't you?" 0

"Stop talking nonsense... No, she's not my girlfriend! Just a regular... regular friend..." Big Bear Brother's secret was exposed, and his face turned red again. The more he tried to explain, the less confident he sounded, so he decided to fall silent. 0

Seeing him quiet, Weiwei couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, alright, I won't say anything more. But don't try to hide it. We all know who was daydreaming and acting all shy." 0

Yin Nuo, who had been focused on driving fast, couldn't help but chuckle as well. "Weiwei, that's enough. If you keep this up, Brother Bear is going to get angry." 0

The boy, unsure if he was embarrassed or annoyed, quickened his pace, leaving the two chattering girls behind. 0

Weiwei rolled her eyes at his retreating figure. 0
