Chapter 15: Shadows by the Window
Leaning against the car window, Jiang He exhaled a puff of smoke, watching as two cars gradually approached in the distance. He finally let out a sigh of relief.
Having successfully completed his task of luring the enemy away, he had avoided any mishaps like breakdowns or engine failures on the road, effortlessly shaking off the excited Zombie team. However, due to his unfamiliarity with the roads, Jiang He had to take several detours before arriving in front of Central Hospital.
The two cars came to a stop one after the other. Jiang He tossed aside his cigarette butt, opened the car door, and stepped out.
"Successful rendezvous! Allow me to wear a proud expression," he said with a cheeky grin as he leaned against the front of the car, looking at the few people who were unharmed and feeling an overwhelming sense of joy.
"What are you so happy about?" Song Yao shot him an annoyed glare.
Chao Yifan and Little Gold also got out of their cars and joined them. The area in front of the hospital was eerily quiet, with no signs of danger.
"By some miracle, we survived, thanks to Da Hai's loudspeaker," Chao Yifan said, smacking his lips and joining in on the laughter. Suddenly noticing someone else getting out of the SUV, he paused in surprise.
"Da Hai, you’re impressive! Last time you brought back two girls; this time you’ve brought back a lady?" Chao Tianwang looked at Jiang He with newfound respect.
Jiang He laughed and scolded him lightly. "What nonsense are you talking about? Let me introduce you—this is Dr. An; she’ll be our team doctor from now on. You better be polite… and this young man is Dr. An’s son."
An Zheng maintained a calm smile as he greeted everyone briefly. The child seemed shy, hiding behind An Zheng and reluctant to show himself.
"So, is everyone here now?" An Zheng raised an eyebrow and asked. "Can we set off?"
"Yeah, everyone’s here, but we haven’t finalized our itinerary yet. We were planning to get our gear ready and discuss it at the bar, but now we can’t go back," Jiang He shrugged helplessly as he explained the situation.
"Don’t mention the bar right now; just thinking about it makes my stomach hurt," Chao Yifan grimaced before suddenly recalling something. "Dr… um, Doctor, you are a physician, right?"
"Ah?" An Zheng was taken aback by the question. "Yes, a doctor is indeed a physician."
"No, I mean… well, I have a question I’d like to consult you about," Chao Yifan stammered awkwardly, struggling to articulate his thoughts.
An Zheng smiled oddly and said, "Go ahead and ask; don’t be nervous."
Chao Yifan scratched his head awkwardly, organizing his thoughts before speaking seriously. "Dr. An, what do you know about Zombies?"
"Oh?" An Zheng raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"Uh, I don't really know how to say it. It's just that... you know, do Zombies still have their brains? I mean... uh, can they talk? Why can't I get my thoughts straight..." Chao Tianwang rambled incoherently, ending up confusing even himself.
Jiang He and Song Yao exchanged glances, their expressions turning strange as they looked at Chao Yifan.
Little Gold smiled and said, "Let me explain since you're so anxious. Dr. An, he wants to ask if those Zombies... still have their consciousness from when they were alive?"
"Yes, yes, that's exactly it!" Chao Tianwang was sweating from anxiety, finally relieved that Jinhua helped him articulate the question.
An Zheng glanced between the two and asked, "I'm still not quite clear on why you're asking this."
"Yeah, I don't understand either. Yi Fan, what are you talking about?" Jiang He was equally puzzled and curious.
"Just now, a Zombie talked to me," Chao Yifan said, sounding somewhat unsure of himself.
"A Zombie talked to you? What did it say? 'How are you? Fine, thank you?'" Jiang He tilted his head and leaned in closer, reaching out to touch Chao Yifan's forehead.
Chao Yifan swatted Jiang He's hand away. "I'm not joking; it really happened. It was the one that Song Yao decapitated when he rushed into the bar."
"What?" This time it was Song Yao who was dumbfounded.
"It's really strange," Little Gold timidly chimed in to support Chao Yifan. "Normally, Zombies would rush at living people to bite them, but that fat one didn't. When Yi Fan asked if it was talking to him, it actually nodded."
Now Jiang He was also bewildered. Chao Yifan might be rambling, but he felt Little Gold wouldn't join him in nonsense.
The four young people stared at each other in disbelief while An Zheng furrowed his brow, a flicker of something unusual passing through his eyes. But it was just a moment; An Zheng quickly returned to normal and asked, "Please tell me more details."
Then Chao Yifan and Little Gold took turns recounting the events as they had unfolded, especially the moment when Fat Boss met his gruesome end. They weren't sure if they were being morbid or just nervous; Little Gold recounted it once, and then Chao Yifan added more details to fill in the gaps.
The five of them fell into silence. An Zheng was deep in thought, while the four young people continued to stare at each other blankly.
"What did you hear him say?" Jiang He asked.
"I told you, I could tell from the tone. Really, he kept repeating a falling tone and a rising tone. The key is, think about it—when I fell, he didn’t come over to bite me. You’ve seen other Zombies; they all scream loudly without any rhythmic tones, right?" Chao Yifan was earnest, fearing that others wouldn’t believe him. At that moment, he was so anxious that his face turned red and his neck thickened.
"Calm down. Can you imitate it?" An Zheng seemed interested and insisted that Chao Yifan sing it again despite the current situation.
Chao Tianwang rolled his eyes and thought for a moment before opening his mouth: "Hissing... Hissing..."
"That’s terrible. What was that?" Jiang He mercilessly cast a dissenting vote, while Song Yao and An Zheng fell silent, deep in thought.
"I also think he was trying to express something. Yi Fan said he heard the tone, so I listened carefully too, and it really was..." Little Gold recalled the scene at that time and shuddered at the sight of Fat Boss's miserable appearance.
"You didn’t open the door for him; could he have been saying 'pay with your life' or 'give me my life back'?" Song Yao began to brainstorm wildly.
"Good sister, do you know what falling tone and rising tone mean?" Jiang He scoffed at Song Yao's explanation.
"Then what do you think it means?" Song Yao wrinkled her little nose, feeling unconvinced.
"Although I don’t know what it means, based on what Chao Tianwang said about the four tones and three tones, it definitely isn’t anything like 'pay with your life' or something." Jiang He pouted.
