Chapter 14: Evacuation and the Road Ahead
Little Gold sat frozen in the driver's seat, watching the bloody Zombie slowly approach Chao Yifan. She trembled as she called out Chao Yifan's name, but he seemed dazed and unresponsive. The Zombie appeared oblivious to Jinhua's voice; although it dragged its feet closer to Chao Yifan, it did not lunge forward to bite like other Zombies.
"Yi Fan... please get up..." Despite her fear, Little Gold snapped back to reality. Seeing that the Zombie was not paying attention to her, she opened the car door and stepped out, trembling as she called Chao Yifan's name again.
Chao Tianwang, after a brief moment of distraction, suddenly jolted awake and quickly scrambled to pick up a fruit knife.
Hissing... Hissing... The Fat Boss's corpse stood motionless, its arms hanging limply at its sides. The remaining cloudy eyeball fixated on Chao Yifan, emitting an unsettling sound from its throat.
"Yi Fan..." Little Gold was bewildered by the scene before her. Zombies were always aggressive towards living people; why was this Fat Boss Zombie standing still?
"Shh." Chao Yifan made a strange gesture for silence and cautiously took a couple of steps closer, tentatively asking, "Are you... talking to me?"
"Yi Fan... what are you doing?" Little Gold was startled by Chao Yifan's odd behavior. When she realized he was speaking to the Zombie, a chill ran down her spine.
"He... he seems to be talking to me..." Chao Yifan said hesitantly, glancing at the grotesque Fat Boss. He carefully asked again, "Are you talking to me?"
To Little Gold and Chao Tianwang's shock, the Fat Boss actually nodded stiffly!!!
Though it was a slight movement, combined with Chao Yifan's earlier question, it truly seemed like a nod!
Little Gold was completely stunned, standing dumbfounded by the car door as she watched the scene unfold.
Chao Yifan's eyes widened in disbelief as he fumbled around his body and urgently asked, "What do you want to say?"
Hissing... Hissing... The Fat Boss's face had been mostly bitten off, and its throat was torn apart, making its sounds unintelligible. However, Chao Yifan detected some nuances; the low growls from the Fat Boss had distinct tonal variations.
“Jinhua, did you hear what he was saying?” Chao Yifan looked at Little Gold, who covered her mouth and stared wide-eyed, not responding.
“Hissing… Hissing…” The low growl continued.
“What does it mean? What does it mean???” Chao Yifan was losing his mind, pacing frantically. He recognized the tones; it was a word composed of a descending tone and an ascending tone. Fat Boss repeatedly growled these two tones but had yet to pounce and bite… What did this mean? Did it mean he still had awareness? That he was still alive? But he and Jinhua had clearly seen him being eaten alive by a Zombie!
Just as the two were in a bizarre standoff with the Zombie, a sharp screech of brakes echoed from outside the bar.
Song Yao rushed into the bar and saw Little Gold and Chao Yifan standing dumbfounded, while a bloody Zombie loomed in front of Chao Yifan. The Zombie seemed to have heard the commotion, stiffly turning around and slowly raising an arm, its throat emitting that hoarse, unpleasant growl.
Without hesitation, Song Yao swung a shovel and sent the Zombie's head flying eight feet away.
Half of Blood Gourd's head collided with the wall with a loud thud before dropping to the ground, rolling away with a trail of blood, while the body, now missing half its head, collapsed to the floor, motionless.
“Get moving! What are you standing there for?” Song Yao exclaimed in frustration as she saw the two still frozen in place.
“You… you just…” Chao Yifan stammered for a long time but couldn't find the right words. Shock and confusion filled his face as he scrambled back into the Pickup.
Song Yao was bewildered by their reactions but didn’t have time to waste on questions. She quickly ran back to the SUV driven by An Zheng. The two vehicles sped out of the bar's roundabout one after another. Most of the Zombies had been drawn away by Jiang He driving down West Street. Song Yao and her group headed in the opposite direction, with Chao Yifan gripping the steering wheel tightly behind them.
“Yi Fan… what just happened…” Little Gold still hadn’t come to her senses, staring blankly ahead while mumbling.
“He was really talking; he was really talking,” Chao Yifan said, drenched in sweat, unsure if it was from fear or heat, repeating those words over and over.
“Then… then… did Yao Yao just kill him?” Little Gold suddenly realized that if Fat Boss wasn’t dead, then Song Yao had just taken his life with that swing!
"I don't know either. Let's get out of here; my head is a bit messy." Chao Yifan wiped the sweat from his face, trying hard to calm himself down.
The vehicle ahead was moving quickly, swiftly passing through the roundabout and KTV, then darting into one of the main roads, with the Pickup closely following behind. The two cars kicked up a cloud of dust as they disappeared at the end of the street.
Around a corner, Gao Yang and Fifth stood behind a billboard, watching the two vehicles gradually fade away, their expressions complex.
"Well, they’re gone," Fifth said, frowning deeply.
Gao Yang's eyes lit up. "They've left, and Zombie has left too. The bar will be empty!"
"Huh?" Fifth finally caught on.
"Let’s go to the bar, find a way to get some food and drinks. After resting for a couple of days, we can leave," Gao Yang said, the despair in his heart instantly dissipating as a glimmer of hope illuminated his face.
"Right! We can hide for a few days and get a car to leave... You really have a good head on your shoulders," Fifth said, his furrowed brow finally relaxing a bit. He knew that Gao Yang used to be a truck driver, so getting a vehicle shouldn't be too difficult; the real challenge was finding a safe place to hide.
"Yeah, let’s hurry. Zhou Huai and Qiangzi still don’t know where we are. If they find us, we won’t have anything good coming our way," Gao Yang said, glancing worriedly at the dark KTV. Even though the sun had risen, light had failed to penetrate the concrete buildings. The empty city still felt cold and damp, exuding a musty odor.
The two quickly crossed the street and cautiously entered the bar. Fat Boss's body lay quietly on the ground, thick blood pooling around him. They covered their mouths and noses with their sleeves and dragged the body outside. After checking thoroughly, they confirmed that the bar was safe.
