Chapter 008: Encounter with the Female Doctor 0

Having narrowly escaped death, Jiang He had learned his lesson this time. He packed away the climbing pick into his bag, gripping the meat cleaver in one hand as he and Song Yao quickly retreated. 0

The zombies in the corridor had been dealt with, but the fire in the mall was spreading rapidly. As they dashed into Area A, they could still feel the heat wave. Most of the zombies had likely been drawn away by the sound of explosions, allowing Jiang He and Song Yao to retreat without incident. 0

"Wait!" Just as they reached the door, Jiang He hurriedly turned back. Song Yao, wary of their surroundings, followed closely behind. 0

Jiang He maneuvered around a row of basketball machines and found the mall's standard fire hydrant. He reversed his grip on the cleaver and smashed open the glass cover of the fire hydrant, clearing away the shards to retrieve a brand-new fire axe from inside. 0

"I can't carry a knife anymore; let's switch to an axe," Jiang He said with a grin, holding a knife in one hand and an axe in the other, looking every bit like a butcher. 0

Song Yao shot him an annoyed glare as they burst out of the mall. Looking up at Pedestrian Street, they saw that the entire second floor of the mall was engulfed in flames, with fire beginning to spread to the third floor. The flames shot into the sky, thick black smoke billowing upwards. 0

Pedestrian Street prohibited motor vehicles, so Jiang He and Song Yao had no choice but to run with their heavy bags. Being a girl, Song Yao struggled to catch her breath after running just two hundred meters. Jiang He glanced around and ran back to her side, unloading her heavy bag. 0

"You go run out to the street and see if there are any cars you can drive. If you find one, come back quickly to get me." 0

"What if there aren't any?" Song Yao asked. 0

"That's obvious; if there aren't any, you still have to come back for me!" Jiang He urged, keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings. 0

"Okay, be careful. If any zombies come out, just drop your bag and run forward to meet me," Song Yao instructed before taking off with just her entrenching tool in hand. 0

With two heavy bags in tow, Jiang He's speed slowed to a crawl. He glanced around while trying to remain alert for any threats from behind. Within minutes, he was exhausted and sat down heavily on the ground. Fortunately, the raging fire hadn't attracted any wandering zombies in the city yet. Sitting on his bag with his long-handled fire axe propped beside him, he panted heavily. 0

The long street appeared particularly eerie under the night sky; aside from his own breathing, all he could hear was the crackling sound of flames from behind him. Suddenly, Jiang He regretted letting Song Yao go alone to find a car. What if zombies were drawn over by the light of the fire? Could she handle it by herself? 0

Jiang He felt increasingly uneasy, cursing himself for making such a foolish arrangement. He decided not to wait any longer, quickly stacking the two backpacks under a streetlight and grabbing the Fire Axe before rushing forward. 0

Pedestrian Street wasn't long; he could reach the end in just two minutes. Jiang He carefully shone his flashlight around, but the scene was desolate, and he couldn't see Song Yao anywhere. 0

The traffic on the main road to the left was heavily congested, and the beam of his flashlight was too weak to illuminate anything clearly, making it impossible to tell if Song Yao was over there. 0

Jiang He squinted and vaguely saw a figure moving forward through the night, with something indistinct trailing behind. 0

"Yao Yao?" Jiang He called out softly. 0

There was no response, and anxiety gripped him as he tightened his grip on the Fire Axe. 0

The figure emerged from the thick fog, squeezing out from the congested main road—it was a Zombie. Without hesitation, Jiang He sprinted over and swung the axe, cleaving half of the Zombie's skull off, brains and blood splattering everywhere. 0

"Nice axe! Nice hit!" Jiang He praised the sharpness of his weapon, but when he looked up, he was stunned. 0

To his horror, the shadows in the flow of traffic were all Zombies!!! 0

When Jiang He and Song Yao had come through here, it had been completely empty! 0

With so many Zombies around, how could Song Yao possibly still be alive?! 0

The night was thick with fog, obscuring how many Zombies there actually were, but just by looking at that dark mass, there had to be at least an entire graduating class worth of them. 0

"What do I do? What do I do..." Jiang He muttered in a daze. 0

Song Yao was lost to the unknown, her belongings still in place. It seemed that the destination of these Zombies was the Mall Bonfire Party. Jiang He, armed with an axe, thought that facing so many Zombies might be less painful than ending it all quickly. 0

As Jiang He retreated and glanced around, he wondered if Song Yao could possibly die without a sound. She was probably still messing around in some car, and he needed to make some noise to alert her, lest she look up and find herself surrounded by Zombies, fainting from shock. 0

At that moment, a horde of Zombies was scattered across the main road, drawn by the blazing fire and occasional soft explosions. Jiang He crouched behind a trash can, still unnoticed. He initially intended to create some noise to signal Song Yao but lost his nerve upon seeing the dense horde of Zombies behind the main road. 0

Just as Jiang He hesitated, headlights illuminated the street on the other side of the main road. An SUV sped towards him, crashing into two Zombies with unstoppable force before turning onto Pedestrian Street! 0

The horde of Zombies erupted into chaos; those who had been quietly observing the fire began to scream wildly and stagger after the SUV. Jiang He wasn't sure if Song Yao was inside the vehicle, but it was clear that its occupants hadn't seen him hiding behind the trash can. The commotion had disturbed the entire horde. Jiang He found himself in a precarious position—he couldn't run away or stay put. 0

He dared not make any sudden moves and shifted slightly to conceal himself further in the shadows, fixating on the taillights of the SUV. The vehicle quickly approached where he had left his belongings, and then someone opened the door and grabbed a backpack. The pursuing Zombies were still far behind, but a large number had already blocked off this exit. If the SUV wanted to escape, it would have to go through the mall side. This left Jiang He helplessly watching others flee while he remained encircled by Zombies. 0

After taking the backpack, the occupants of the car didn’t leave immediately. Then Jiang He heard Song Yao calling for him. 0

“Thank goodness!” he sighed in relief, knowing he wouldn’t be left behind. Glancing at the ever-growing number of Zombies, he steeled himself and dashed out along the left side of the sidewalk. 0

“Hey! Song Yao! Over here!” Jiang He shouted as he ran. Sure enough, both the Zombies and Song Yao turned their attention toward him. He swung his axe and took down two approaching Zombies before veering toward Song Yao. Seeing that Zombies were distracted by Jiang He, she immediately revved up her car and sped toward him. Realizing this could end badly, Jiang He noticed that more and more Zombies were converging—drawn by firelight, by the car's noise, and by his own presence—creating a chaotic scene on the narrow street. If she drove straight out now, they would likely be trapped by a mass of flesh and blood. 0

The SUV barreled through without avoiding any Zombies. The sound of crashes accompanied by splattering flesh echoed as it reached the opposite sidewalk from Jiang He. He understood there was no time for the vehicle to turn around; grabbing his Fire Axe, he rushed forward while dodging Zombies and swinging his weapon continuously. Between him and the vehicle lay a Green Belt filled with staggering rotting Zombies drawn toward him. 0

The car came to a halt as Song Yao jumped out with an Entrenching Tool in hand, deftly dispatching several Zombies that had their backs turned to her before quickly running to clear a path for Jiang He at the edge of the Green Belt. At that moment, he could think of nothing else but using every ounce of strength to swing his Fire Axe as he moved step by step toward safety in the Green Belt. 0
