The White Panda left a trail of blood on the road, its rear end twisting as it disappeared into the street where Song Yao had vanished. 0

This street was usually bustling with activity, lined with shops and commercial high-rises. After the disaster struck, the throngs of people and the elite white-collar workers had all disappeared without a trace. Some were fortunate enough to escape and hide away, struggling to survive in secret, while many others had fallen on this street, only to awaken once more. 0

Dozens of Zombies stumbled forward, showing no sign of Song Yao. Jiang He knew that traffic congestion on this street wasn't too severe, so he pressed down hard on the accelerator and charged ahead. 0

Bang, bang, bang. A few muffled thuds echoed as several Zombies at the back of the pack were violently knocked aside by Jiang He, leaving a pool of murky, sticky fluid on the windshield. 0

The Zombies ahead heard the commotion and turned back toward him. Jiang He felt a chill run down his spine; he quickly spun the steering wheel, the tires screeching against the pavement as they skidded. 0

Unfortunately, Jiang He was no race car driver and rarely had the chance to drive. In his frantic attempts to dodge the Horde of Zombies, he collided repeatedly with them until his engine sputtered and died in the middle of the road. 0

Cursing under his breath, Jiang He struggled to restart the car but failed repeatedly. Seeing the Horde of Zombies closing in again, he had no choice but to abandon the vehicle and flee. 0

“Song Yao! If you’re alive, make a sound!” 0

The Zombies moved slowly, allowing Jiang He to shout for Song Yao as he ran, hoping she could hear him. 0

“ Jiang He! Over here!” 0

Suddenly, a voice calling for help came from a Dicos fast-food restaurant behind him. Jiang He quickly turned around and jumped onto a car roof to evade a few lunging Zombies. Peering through the large transparent windows of Dicos, he saw Song Yao anxiously waving her hands and pointing toward the entrance. 0

Jiang He hurried over and slipped inside, pressing himself against the door. 0

“What are you doing hiding in here?” 0

“Too many zombies... Where's the car?” 0

“The car's gone! Quickly, find something to block the door!” 0

The horde of zombies slammed against the glass door, and Jiang He was clearly struggling to hold on. 0

Song Yao anxiously moved the tables and chairs, but the fast-food restaurant's furniture was immovable. The gap in the glass door widened, and several decaying hands reached through. 0

“Back kitchen! In there!” Jiang He shouted as she jumped aside, grabbing Song Yao and running. Behind them, the glass door shattered with a loud crash, and the horde of zombies roared as they surged inside. 0

The two tumbled into the back kitchen, hastily dragging an aluminum counter to block the entrance before sprinting toward the back door. 0

The back kitchen had a small door for taking out trash and unloading supplies. As they ran, Jiang He grabbed a bread knife, spun around, and plunged it deep into the chest of a zombie behind her! 0

The eight-inch blade sank in completely, but the zombie showed no reaction after being stabbed. It lunged forward, grabbing Jiang He by the shoulders and opening its blood-soaked mouth to bite down! 0

In a moment of desperation, Song Yao swung a stick and struck the zombie's head hard, knocking it off course. He quickly grabbed Jiang He and pulled her away. 0

Still shaken, Jiang He didn’t even think about the knife anymore; she screamed as she and Song Yao ran for their lives. 0

Fortunately, the back door of the fast-food restaurant was open. The two burst through it, and Song Yao turned back to brace against the door, trying to wedge a rolling pin into the latch. Jiang He hurried to help. They fumbled around for what felt like ages before finally managing to block the door, while the zombies continued to roar behind them. 0

Having narrowly escaped, they didn’t dare waste any time—there wasn’t even a moment to talk. The backyard was small, cluttered with trash cans wrapped in black plastic bags along the walls. There was an iron gate on one side, and parked at the entrance was a pickup truck. 0

"Ever since I met you, it's been nothing but bad luck!" Song Yao gasped, holding her waist as she caught her breath. Her face was flushed from the exertion, and her chest rose and fell visibly, clearly exhausted. 0

"Same here," Jiang He replied, panting heavily as well. He quickly walked to the iron gate and peered outside. The back door led to a fork in the road connecting to an intersection, which was relatively open, and he saw no sign of any Zombies. It seemed the commotion had drawn them away. 0

"There are no Zombies here; let's hurry up and go," Jiang He called to Song Yao as he opened the iron gate. Turning back, he noticed Song Yao had opened the door of the Pickup. 0

"The keys are in the ignition! Get in!" Song Yao exclaimed with delight, turning the key. The Pickup sputtered out a cloud of black smoke before successfully starting. 0

Jiang He quickly climbed into the passenger seat, and it wasn't until Song Yao drove past the intersection that he finally relaxed, slumping into his seat. 0

"That was so intense..." Jiang He said, picking up a flyer to fan himself. The series of frantic moments left him feeling unusually drained. 0

"How could you be so reckless? Didn't you know you had to aim for their heads?" Song Yao drove steadily, recalling the earlier harrowing scene and couldn't help but scold Jiang He. 0

"I was too nervous; it didn't cross my mind," Jiang He replied with a helpless shake of his head. He then asked, "Have you ever killed these things?" 0

"Yeah," Song Yao answered simply. 0

"You're pretty ruthless then. I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this; it just feels... too unbelievable." 0

"Yeah, my parents couldn't believe it either, which is why they couldn't escape." 0

Jiang He paused at her words, turning to look at Song Yao. Her expression was calm, devoid of much emotion. 0

"Are you all alone now?" Jiang He asked. 0

"I have a younger brother studying in Beijing. I don't know how he's doing," Song Yao replied, her expression brightening slightly at the mention of him. 0

"Then he should be fine; there probably aren't many issues in the capital." 0

"Who knows? If it's safe there, why hasn't anyone come to rescue us?" Song Yao's short hair was tousled by the wind, and her eyes sparkled with an unexplainable meaning. 0

Jiang He didn't know how to respond, so he changed the subject. "Where are we headed now?" 0

"I'm going to pick up a friend from my place and bring food and clean water," Song Yao answered. 0

"Oh." Jiang He nodded and turned to look out the window. The sky was already dimly lit; morning light spilled onto the desolate streets. On this summer morning, a chill lingered in the air. 0

The pickup truck passed through several intersections and approached a residential area. 0

"What about you? All by yourself?" The silence had become somewhat awkward, prompting Song Yao to ask. 0

"Yeah, my boss went abroad for a vacation before everything happened. I didn't take any leave, or I wouldn't be stuck here," Jiang He said, rubbing his face vigorously and forcing a wry smile. 0

Song Yao glanced at him and laughed. "I really can't tell if you're lucky or unlucky." 0
