"Do you want to eat this? This one's not bad," Chen Mo said, sitting by Li Xiaonan's bed and continuously shoving food from the lunchbox into Li Xiaonan's mouth.
"Cough... can you slow down a bit? I'm going to choke," Li Xiaonan said, pounding his chest and frowning.
"It's because you're daydreaming. Have you thought it through? Will your parents accept it?" Chen Mo put down the lunchbox and started peeling an apple.
"I don't know... my mind is all jumbled right now."
Chen Mo cut the apple into small pieces, placed them in a box, and handed him a few fruit forks on top. "If it were me, I would accept it. With parents like that, wouldn't you be able to turn your life around and escape those poor days?"
Li Xiaonan sighed and offered a piece of apple to Chen Mo's mouth. "I want to go back home and see my dad. He has the right to know about this."
Chen Mo's face turned slightly red as he took a bite of the apple and mumbled, "Alright, I'll go with you."
"Aren't you going to class?"
"What's so hard about taking a leave? Once you're healed, I'll go with you to see your uncle."
Li Xiaonan shook his head. "I want to leave tomorrow."
He was thinking about the promise made in January; if he was going to leave in the end, this would be the last time he saw his dad. He needed to handle everything quickly before meeting up with the girls.
"Have you lost your mind? How are you going to get discharged now?"
"I know my own body better than you do; it's not as serious as you think." Li Xiaonan said as he removed the netting wrapped around his head.
"Xiao Nan, what are you doing?" Sumei and Ye Gang entered just in time, startled by Li Xiaonan's actions.
Chen Mo quickly stood up. "Uncle, Auntie, Xiao Nan is insisting on getting discharged. I can't persuade him otherwise." He turned to Li Xiaonan and said, "Even if you don't acknowledge me or your mom, you can't joke around with your health."
"I know. I just want to go back home for a bit. I'll take care of myself; just give me some time, okay? Mom... Dad..."
Li Xiaonan gathered all her courage and uttered the last two words.
Fang Ye was taken aback, excitedly saying, "Child, what did you call me? Say it again..."
Li Xiaonan frowned slightly, looking at Fang Ye's eager expression. She didn't want to hurt his feelings, but she found it impossible to speak again.
Su Mei pulled Fang Ye aside and said, "Don't pressure him. This child is just like you; the fact that he managed to say that is already a huge step. Give him some time. Xiao Nan, how about your parents go back with you? It would be good to have someone looking out for you."
Li Xiaonan shook her head. "No, that's not necessary. You've already hurt him enough. Though you gave birth to me, it was he who raised me. He will always be my father; that is an unchangeable fact."
Su Mei bit her lip lightly and glanced at Fang Ye.
Fang Ye nodded and immediately took out his checkbook, writing a check for one million.
"Xiao Nan, take this... I... I don't know how to compensate your father... This is all I can do..."
Li Xiaonan looked at the check and couldn't help but smile bitterly. The old man probably never earned that much money in his lifetime.
Life is truly unfair; no matter how hard one works, it may not compare to a fleeting glance from another.
Chen Mo glanced at Li Xiaonan, who looked like she was about to cry, and took the check from her. "Uncle and Auntie, don’t worry. I will take good care of Xiao Nan."
Su Mei and Fang Ye nodded in satisfaction.
This suddenly appeared son felt like a gift sent by Heavenly Fate—talented and also bringing along a beautiful future daughter-in-law.
A day later, Li Xiaonan and Chen Mo appeared at the airport.
With a Principal Dad around, things moved much more efficiently. Fang Ye booked their tickets for the next day without hesitation.
"Look at you being so timid. Don't worry; flying isn't that scary," Chen Mo said with a smile to comfort her.
Li Xiaonan's lips twitched slightly; it wasn't that she was afraid of flying, but rather that she saw someone familiar approaching.
She looked at Cunning Li walking towards her—sunglasses on, wearing a long black coat, looking incredibly handsome.
However, this wasn't the reason Li Xiaonan felt flustered; the key point was the six beautiful girls behind Scheming Li, each looking as if they had descended from the heavens.
This group of handsome men and beautiful women instantly became a stunning sight at the airport. Those unaware would think they were international stars arriving from somewhere.
Cunning Li walked up to Li Xiaonan and took off his sunglasses. "So, how is it? I know you're short on time, so I made an excuse to bring them all out."
"You're..." Li Xiaonan seethed, grabbing his collar but unable to articulate a single coherent word.
"Hey, what are you doing? Let go of my friend, Xiao Nan!" Yun Moyu pushed Li Xiaonan away forcefully.
Li Xiaonan was taken aback, staring at Yun Moyu, who felt like a stranger to her.
Dressed in a gray shirt and blue jeans with a slightly androgynous style, she completely overshadowed Li Xiaonan's delicate demeanor, appearing more spirited and capable instead.
Cunning Li wrapped an arm around Li Xiaonan and said, "Miss Yun, don't be angry. This is my good brother, also named Li Xiaonan. He must be intimidated seeing me with so many beautiful women."
Yun Moyu tossed her long hair over her shoulder and replied, "Is he even worthy of the name Li Xiaonan?"
Li Xiaonan felt as if his heart was being sliced open. He stole glances at the other girls, especially Ling Kui.
The dark green shirt she wore accentuated her fair skin but also made her seem even colder.
When Scheming mentioned Li Xiaonan, she shot him a cold glance that lingered for barely a moment.
Cunning Li stroked his chin and smiled warmly at Li Xiaonan, as if reminding him that appearances were important.
Just as Li Xiaonan was feeling dejected, a soft little hand linked with his arm.
Chen Mo shot a cold glance at Yun Moyu and said, "Oh? Is your Xiao Nan under some kind of contract? Just because she has a bit of charm doesn't mean she can say such shameless things. It's truly disgusting."
"Sister Yanrong!"
All the girls turned their gazes toward Chen Mo's face in response to Yun Moyu's exclamation.
"I'm Chen Mo! Don't mistake me for someone else. Hey, Scheming! Xiao Nan's injury isn't healed yet, so I'm handing my stuff over to you."
Cunning Li nodded and took Chen Mo's backpack.
After a brief moment of confusion, Yun Moyu finally realized that the person in front of her was not Li Yanrong. She suppressed Scheming's hand and said to Chen Mo, "Hey, don't you have hands? Do you need someone else to help you carry your things?"
"Yes, I don't have hands. Didn't you see me holding onto my Xiao Nan? It's truly pitiful that such a fine girl is blind as a bat."
When it came to verbal sparring, Yun Moyu was no match for Chen Mo.
She was momentarily speechless, "You—"
"What about you? You can't even form a complete sentence. Who would like a woman like you?"
Yun Moyu glared at Cunning Li and said, "Don't speak for her."
Scheming shrugged and paused, looking at Li Xiaonan with interest.
Li Xiaonan's brows were already tightly knitted.
"Oh, on what grounds do you give orders? Do you think—"
"Enough." Li Xiaonan frowned and shot a cold glance at Chen Mo and Yun Moyu before walking over to Scheming, picking up her backpack.
He whispered, "Let's see how you end this farce."
Scheming smiled lightly and replied in a voice only Li Xiaonan could hear, "I don't have the ability to end it; it's you who will have to."
"Wow, is this an airplane?" Li Baobao exclaimed excitedly, looking around. The other girls were similarly thrilled.
Only Yun Moyu remained sulky, her gaze fixed on Li Xiaonan and Chen Mo without pause.
Li Xiaonan placed Chen Mo's bag down properly and sat beside him.
Unbeknownst to them, Scheming had intentionally arranged for Ling Kui and the others to sit right next to them.
Chen Mo frowned slightly and lowered his voice, "Do you know these girls?"
"What nonsense..." Li Xiaonan cleared her throat, her gaze drifting out the window as she spoke softly.
"You think I'm an idiot? You mistook me for someone else the first time. That girl just now also called me Yanrong... Yes, that's the name. If you can mistake me for the same person, surely you would recognize me."
Li Xiaonan spread his hands and said, "Do you think they know me?"
"Hmph, I don't care. I'm sticking to you, and no one else can get close," Chen Mo said, tightly linking her arm with Li Xiaonan's and leaning in.
Li Xiaonan gazed out the window, but his thoughts were entirely on the few girls behind him.
The plane surprisingly took off on time without any delays. "Silly girl, it's not like you haven't flown before. You love looking at the scenery; let’s switch places," he said lightly.
Li Baobao nodded happily.
As Ling Kui stood up, she caught a glimpse of Li Xiaonan's smile through the glass window—faint yet tinged with sadness.
"Xiao Nan, why don’t you sleep for a while? You haven’t closed your eyes since yesterday," Chen Mo said, looking at his somewhat pale face.
Li Xiaonan nodded, took off his glasses, leaned back in his seat, and closed his eyes.
Falling asleep was easier than he had imagined; he quickly drifted off but found himself wandering through one nightmare after another.
Those girls from the past who had once been friendly to him now felt like strangers. No matter how he called out to them, they only turned to embrace someone else.
"Ha..." After struggling repeatedly, Li Xiaonan finally returned to reality.
Beside him, Chen Mo asked, "Awake? Did you sleep well?"
He instinctively nodded, but in truth, being awake felt better than sleeping. He reached for his glasses but found a brand-new pair of black frames instead.
He stared blankly at Chen Mo.
Her round almond-shaped eyes curved into crescent moons. "Do you like them?"
"Thank you," Li Xiaonan replied with a faint smile as he put on the new glasses.
"You're really handsome," Chen Mo exclaimed.
Li Xiaonan was not unattractive to begin with; his previous look had been somewhat lackluster mainly due to the old plastic frame. With the new glasses, he appeared much more spirited.
"Hmph, is that what you call handsome?" Yun Moyu shot him a cold glance as she followed the crowd off the plane.
Unbeknownst to him, the plane had already landed.
Li Xiaonan sighed and recalled a line of poetry: Meeting is not as good as not meeting; what is affection compared to indifference...
The horizontal inscription read: "One's own misdeeds bring about one's downfall."
