After the break, Xiar and Leslie continued into the room where his father lay sleeping.
A physician and a guard stood vigil there, taking turns from morning till night. They were prepared to report any emergencies immediately.
"Young Master..." The physician looked at him nervously.
With the head of the family remaining in a coma, Marcus, who commanded the family guard, had grown increasingly irritable. Anyone who dared to cause trouble would face severe punishment, and many had been executed.
The refugees who had initially flooded in were now working diligently in the western mines, exchanging their labor for temporary housing and food, with hopes of settling in Shining Gold Town in the future.
Like the Flower Family in his previous life, people in this world also pursued homeownership. Most worked steadily to earn money to build new houses and marry.
"Mr. Leslie, what do you think?" Xiar gestured for him to step outside and then quietly asked.
Leslie approached, examining Baron Bougiano's eyes and mouth carefully before shaking his head. "I'm sorry; I'm not a medical expert. I only have systematic knowledge of human anatomy."
"Baron has been in a coma due to toxins spreading throughout his body. Even if most of it is removed, it cannot be completely cured."
"Do you know of any treatment methods?" Xiar asked reluctantly.
The memories he had merged with, along with the seemingly strict yet attentive care from the Baron, had already made him regard the man as a true family member.
"There is indeed a method, but it requires going to Morent. Morent has the most advanced medical techniques in this world; they can even regenerate severed limbs, let alone deal with mere toxin infections," Leslie replied calmly, his words leaving no room for doubt.
"I believe you, but unfortunately, Father would never want to leave this Empire," Xiar sighed.
Morent was entirely an anomaly—a highly advanced biological civilization that appeared in a world with medieval technology, creating a significant discord.
There, top-tier biotechnology existed that surpassed even that of his previous life. Utilizing Totem Power allowed its people to explore the essence of humanity, leading to the shocking Human Super Evolution project.
This enabled humans to evolve continuously like totems, gaining terrifying powers along with accompanying Totem Armor to enhance their abilities.
Xiar couldn't help but think of a saying—it's not that the Empire isn't trying; it's just that they face formidable opponents!
In truth, Xiar had an even better solution: transforming the Baron into a Half Totem.
With the enhancement of the Half Totem's physical attributes, it was sufficient to dispel this poison specifically designed to target ordinary people.
However, this instinctively made him resist, for the Half Totem represented becoming his Servant, with his life thereafter under the control of another, reduced to the status of a pet—something he could never bring himself to do to his own family.
This method was buried deep within him; he would not resort to it unless absolutely necessary.
As he stepped out of the room, Steward Simon approached him with a hint of apology. "Young Master, the Master is currently unconscious. There are some matters concerning the territory that require your decision."
"What matters? You can handle them yourself," Xiar replied, not particularly enthusiastic about the situation.
Even with a gold mine in this territory, its annual income barely reached a few thousand gold coins. If he were to use that money to upgrade his totems with gemstones, he could at most upgrade two; and if he encountered more expensive gemstones, he might not even have enough for one.
Given this, relying on the income from this territory seemed less advantageous than abandoning it altogether and leveling up by hunting monsters.
"I'm sorry, Young Master. There are important matters regarding taxes that require the head of the family’s signature," Steward Simon said, lowering his head but not stepping back. With an expectant tone, he continued, "The Master instructed me that if he ever encountered any problems, I should let you manage the family affairs."
"The family's development to this point has taken decades of effort from the Master; it cannot simply be abandoned."
"But I'm not good at handling these matters," Xiar said, feeling a headache coming on.
He had prepared himself to head to Morent; how could he stay behind to deal with these trivialities? Remaining here meant he wouldn't even be able to gather various gemstone materials, let alone acquire a Rune Factory worth tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands.
The Rune Factory was an essential tool for a Spirit Master. He needed to obtain one to reconstruct Firefly and build two other totems.
The Colorful Puffball could allow ordinary beings to directly become totems but could not be stored away; it had to be carried around, making it easy for others to see through any strength or combat capability.
Only through the construction of a Rune Factory could a totem be completely semi-etherealized and stored in an unknown space, following the Spirit Master anywhere.
Most importantly, if such a totem were damaged or even destroyed, as long as enough cost was paid, it could be fully repaired.
With Xiar's understanding of the Evolution Modulator, constructing a totem in this way meant that he could repair it simply by consuming Evolution Points!
"Young Master, the Master did not intend to tell you this, but now that he is unconscious, I will overstep my bounds and share something with you."
Curious at Simon's words, Xiar looked at him as he spoke slowly. "The entrance requirements for the Imperial Royal Academy are very high. The Master went to visit Viscount Mark in order to secure your eligibility for participation in the assessment and some pathways that would ensure your success."
"You're welcome, but that person is a genuine vampire. He immediately asked for nearly one hundred thousand gold coins and the right to purchase various materials at half price. In order to secure a better future for you, my lord went to great lengths to establish connections. Now, the entire territory's financial operations are facing some issues..."
The other party sighed, causing Xiar's heart to tremble as he once again felt the Baron’s affection for him.
Unbeknownst to him, the Baron had already paid such a heavy price on his behalf.
Most importantly, after learning that he had become a Spirit Master, the Baron had never mentioned the Imperial Royal Academy again.
In other words, he had completely wasted such a substantial amount of funds, all just for his sake.
During that time, whenever the Baron held him close, he would often lament the decline of their family.
Always situated on the fringes of the empire, as a rural landlord in a remote area, he had never been able to enter the upper echelons of imperial nobility; even the nearby nobles of Storm Harbor looked down on him.
Clearly, the Baron's greatest dream was for their family to rise again and attain unparalleled glory.
But none of that could compare to his future!
Xiar sighed and smiled as he said, "Grandpa Simon, please teach me how to manage the territory from now on."
The steward's wrinkled face immediately broke into a look of satisfaction.
