Shining Gold Town, an ordinary courtyard.
Beneath it lies a vast, hidden space, with enormous counters arranged on all sides. A kerosene lamp burns brightly, illuminating the dark basement.
It also lights up the items on the shelves, where thousands of compartments hold various animal specimens, each submerged in a peculiar light green liquid that emits a somewhat pungent uric acid smell.
Xiar sat at a table, diligently sketching. A complex and bizarre pattern slowly took shape under his hand. It looked like a tangled mess but also had a strange melody to it.
This was the basic Inheritance Factor of the totem, akin to fingers on a human hand—only a part of the complete totem, yet more intricate than the design of a two-story villa.
Bruce gazed at him with bright eyes, filled with admiration. "I didn't expect you to grasp it in less than ten tries, and your level is already approaching mastery!"
"It's all thanks to the teacher's notes. I could only master the drawing of the Inheritance Factor so quickly by following the detailed explanations above," Xiar replied modestly, complimenting him while looking at him with anticipation.
"Teacher, can I start learning runes now?"
"You still have a long way to go. Learning runes requires extremely flexible hand gestures, and Mapping can help practice the stability and dexterity of your fingers and arms. Once you reach mastery level, you'll find it much easier to learn runes."
Bruce shook his head seriously, resembling a stern teacher who was disappointed yet encouraging. "If you want to go further in the future, you must build a solid foundation first, and Mapping is the root of everything."
"Teacher, I think I should have reached mastery level..." Xiar said weakly. He hadn't expected that revealing his entry-level status would fail to impress him, so he decided to drop another hint.
"Ha! Do you understand what mastery level means?" The other person looked skeptical, as if he were joking. "You should know that even the most talented Spirit Master takes half a year to reach mastery level. Back in my day, I only made it into the top ten of my academy after three months of reaching mastery."
Bruce seemed quite proud of this, shaking his head as his golden hair flowed with movement, making Xiar feel a bit dazzled.
He pressed his lips together and interrupted the other's boasting. "Teacher, if you let me try, won't you know?"
"Mastery level. This means you can manifest the Inheritance Factor. You’ve barely practiced for ten sessions and haven’t even seen the true form of the Inheritance Factor. How could you possibly draw it?" Bruce shook his head, disappointment evident in his gaze. "You need to force yourself to calm down. Don’t aim too high; it won’t do you any good."
Xiar felt a bit frustrated. Earlier, Bruce had been gentle and refined, like a graceful gentleman, but now he was rambling on like an old woman with bound feet.
He placed his right hand over his chest and bowed deeply, exclaiming, "Teacher Bruce, please show me the Inheritance Factor so I can try to draw it!"
"You really are persistent!"
Bruce shook his head again, feeling even more disappointed. His light blue eyes fixed on Xiar for a few seconds before he sighed and said, "Alright then, let me show you what the Inheritance Factor truly is!"
Xiar felt a jolt of excitement. After all that nagging, Bruce was finally going to reveal something substantial.
The notes clearly stated that to see the Inheritance Factor, one must conduct an Analysis of the organism.
Don’t get it wrong; it’s not about dissecting the creature and treating it like a White Mouse on an Experiment Table.
Instead, it involves using Source Power to cast a Scan Rune over it, enveloping it in a manner similar to light scanning, capturing every detail inside and out to form a three-dimensional map.
Next comes the crucial Analysis process. Using a specialized Analysis Rune, it automatically analyzes the map for the contained Inheritance Factor, much like the most sophisticated computer.
During this process, the biological knowledge possessed by the Spirit Master serves as the source power, driving the Analysis Rune to delve deeper into research. The richer the knowledge at hand, the more thorough the research becomes, resulting in a more complete Inheritance Factor.
Only by mastering a sufficiently complete Inheritance Factor can one enable the totem's Evolution!
"Every organism harbors an Inheritance Factor, which indicates its future direction of Evolution. If an organism has many types of Inheritance Factors, it means there are also multiple potential directions for its Evolution. Now, let me show you a complete Inheritance Factor of a totem!"
Xiar's eyes widened, not blinking as he watched the other person's next move.
He saw Bruce take out a black crystal the size of a marble, holding it in his palm. With a gentle motion of his fingers, a stream of gray mist flowed from the crystal, merging into his hand.
The color of the crystal quickly faded, turning transparent in an instant, then bursting like a bubble, transforming into fine dust that scattered across the ground.
Bruce's hands traced an unusual pattern, somewhat resembling Taoist mudras, as he released one intricate gesture after another in the blink of an eye.
Buzz!
He seemed to hear a faint sound as a pale blue halo abruptly appeared before him. The halo then dispersed, revealing a butterfly the size of a basin.
It had a nose-like protrusion of pale cyan and a pair of dark red compound eyes. Its broad wings shimmered with light blue hues, adorned with black and white veins that released glowing particles with each flap.
Xiar inhaled a bit of the dust and suddenly felt dizzy, making him increasingly drowsy.
"This is the Purple-Winged Butterfly. It typically inhabits forests or areas dense with trees, especially in regions that are often humid and misty. The one you see now is one I caught in the Twilight Forest."
After showcasing it, Bruce casually performed a few more intricate gestures, causing a faint aura to appear around the massive butterfly.
He smiled and said, "The wings of the Purple-Winged Butterfly are covered with fine waterproof scales. When they flap their wings, these scales shed off and possess strong toxicity, enough to make an ordinary person faint."
A hint of fear flickered in Xiar's eyes; he hadn't expected that such a common low-level totem in the game could be so terrifying in reality.
"You lack the protection of Guardian Spirit Light, so you cannot resist this kind of toxicity. This is also the greatest difference between ordinary people and Spirit Masters. Even the weakest Guardian Spirit Light is sufficient to withstand attacks from the strongest warriors among ordinary people!"
Bruce displayed a proud expression, his tone dripping with condescension, clearly looking down on the martial artists from the bottom of his heart.
Then, he made a series of complex hand gestures and said lightly, "Next, I will show you the complete Inheritance Factor diagram. Pay close attention!"
Silver lines appeared out of thin air, weaving in and out of the body of the Purple-Winged Butterfly, encasing it in an instant like a dumpling.
After a while, strange patterns emerged above the Purple-Winged Butterfly, as if imbued with some mysterious power. Just a glance was enough to mesmerize Xiar, trapping him in its allure.
"There aren't that many prodigies in the world; just another overconfident fool," Bruce shook his head, fully aware of the truth.
The Inheritance Factor was not something anyone could comprehend; it was like a form of learning that couldn't be interrupted at will. If one couldn't understand it, they would be unable to break free and could only rely on external forces to interrupt them.
Once interrupted by outside forces, the consequences could range from mental fatigue to outright idiocy!
Just as he prepared to take action, he suddenly saw Xiar lift his head, his eyes sparkling with brilliance. "Teacher, I understand now!"
"Are you alright?" Bruce asked in astonishment, not expecting him to break free on his own.
Xiar shook his head and walked directly to the table. Grabbing the Feather Pen, he began to draw with fluid strokes. Lines formed intricate patterns until he filled an enormous piece of parchment that was even larger than a newspaper.
When Bruce glanced at the drawings on the parchment, he stood frozen in place. "You really understood it? How is that possible?!"
