My relationship with Jiang Huai gradually eased.
At first, I followed Jiang Huai everywhere.
People in our circle said that if anyone wanted to find me, they should just look for Jiang Huai; wherever he was, I would be there too.
But later, the talk changed.
They began to say that if you wanted to find Jiang Huai, you should look for Tang Xiaotian, as Jiang Huai was always seen with girls trailing behind him.
The young master of the Jiang family got angry and sought out Xiao Tian; the Jiang Young Master would surely have no temper left.
On the day the results of the high school entrance exam were released, the very same Jiang Huai who once said it was a dream for us to attend the same school ended up caring more about my exam results than I did.
When the word "admitted" appeared, I clearly heard him let out a long sigh of relief.
I looked at him eagerly, expecting him to praise me.
Instead, when Jiang Huai met my gaze, he froze for a moment, awkwardly looked away, and his mouth remained as sharp as ever: "No matter what, you're still a member of the Jiang family. Attending another high school would only embarrass me."
I sighed. What was I expecting? To hear a compliment from him?
Revolution still requires effort.
I was in my first year of high school while Jiang Huai was in his third.
On the first day of school, I ran into those girls from a year ago who had tried to spill their drinks on me at a banquet.
They were seniors in their third year.
As I contemplated how to avoid them, they accidentally spotted me and their faces turned pale with fear as they hurriedly tried to escape.
I was left dumbfounded. What... was going on?
But they fled too quickly for me to delve deeper into it.
During high school, the age of youthful innocence.
I had a secret that I couldn't share.
The school invited a well-known figure to share his experiences with us, an alumnus who was many years our senior.
Like many other students, I sat obediently in the dimly lit auditorium.
A tall man appeared at the staircase, glancing down at his wristwatch before stepping onto the stage.
As he reached the last step, transitioning from darkness to light, he walked steadily.
He stood confidently in the center of the stage, his long fingers tapping the microphone. Instantly, all the lights focused on him, and the previously noisy audience fell silent.
I restrained a smile, fireworks already bursting in my heart.
Finally, it was happening.
The man’s profile was sharp, his suit accentuating his tall figure, and his expression was calm and indifferent.
His cool, deep voice resonated through the microphone, reaching every corner of the auditorium.
"Hello, everyone. I am Pei Li."
Confidence radiated from him as applause erupted from the audience. I clapped vigorously, no longer able to hide my excitement.
The girl next to me excitedly whispered, "Wow, he's so handsome!"
"His looks are off the charts! And he's so accomplished. Do you think he has a girlfriend?"
"He probably does; he looks like he's not that young anymore. But with someone so exceptional, who could possibly match him?"
I listened to their conversation with a smile but said nothing. It felt good to know that only I knew Pei Li was single.
He had a close relationship with the Jiang family and was a partner of Uncle Jiang.
During my year at the Jiang family, Uncle Jiang often invited him over for dinner.
Though he was only 27, he had a commanding presence. Even the hot-tempered Jiang Huai would calm down in his presence.
Because of what happened at the banquet, I both respected and feared him, not daring to say more than a word.
Yet I couldn't help but observe him; he was truly a handsome man, mature and charming.
Pei Li had a particularly pleasant voice. Every time he spoke with Uncle Jiang, I listened intently, even if I couldn't fully understand the content.
But I always managed to glean the information I wanted to know.
From Uncle Jiang's snippets of conversation, I learned that Pei Li had been single all along.
Uncle Jiang once jokingly urged him to marry: "You're not young anymore; it's time to date."
Pei Li replied lazily, "It's quite troublesome; forget it."
Uncle Jiang teased, "You just haven't met someone you like. Once you do, no matter how troublesome it is, you'll want to be with her."
Pei Li didn't seem to care much, tilting his head back to finish his glass of red wine: "Is that so? I hope so."
