I was in a hurry, but I wasn't foolish enough to go back looking for someone. I pulled out my phone and called the unit, then transferred to our duty room. The call was answered by Sheng Xiong, his deep voice unmistakable. I quickly asked him if Little Farmer was out today. If he wasn't, I told him to call him to the phone immediately, saying I had an urgent matter to discuss. Sheng Xiong put down the phone and stepped out for a moment. When someone responded, it was already Little Farmer on the line.
"I need to talk to you. Call Old Tang to ask for leave; come to xx Hospital. I'll be waiting at the entrance." I didn't say much more because the internal line had an operator listening in, and there was no need to elaborate. Besides, Little Farmer should know why I was looking for him; this wasn't the first time.
After hanging up, I strolled out of the ward and headed to the newsstand across from the hospital. I bought a copy of Science Fiction World and began reading leisurely. Speaking of which, I wondered where that unreliable master Little Farmer had been studying with had gone. Ever since that last incident, I had tried calling him ten times, but eight of those calls went unanswered. It would have been great if he could come now. This whole situation felt strange from the start; Long Xia wasn't wrong—there had to be an underlying reason. Thinking of Long Xia made me suddenly realize that if even Little Farmer couldn't help, then I would have to seek her out.
As I flipped through the magazine while keeping an eye on the hospital entrance, time passed quickly. Before long, I spotted Little Farmer getting out of a taxi in casual clothes, looking around at the hospital entrance. It was obvious he hadn't paid for his fare yet. I quickly tucked away my magazine and hurried across the street to join him.
"Little Farmer, where's your master?" I asked after he paid the taxi fare.
Little Farmer scratched his head and replied, "I don't know either. I haven't seen him in a month; he said he went to Tibet for some business. Why? Are you looking for him?"
"It's fine as long as you're here; there's something important." As we walked toward the Inpatient Department, I explained the situation to Little Farmer, detailing Fu Yuehua's family's attitudes and thoughts. It was crucial for Little Farmer to see things clearly; he had this knack for understanding such matters, and I wanted to know if Fu Yuehua had lost her spirit.
Little Farmer had a decent relationship with Jinghe, so when he heard about this incident, he immediately patted his chest and said, "No problem! I'll go take a look and figure out what's going on. Once we find the root cause, solving it won't be difficult."
As we continued walking and talking, we reached the entrance of the department after exiting the elevator. I composed myself and told Little Farmer, "The family is quite emotional; bringing you in like this might not yield good results. How about this?" I leaned in and whispered a few words in his ear. At first, he looked a bit hesitant but eventually nodded.
We arrived at the door of the ward. I turned back and gestured for him to wait while I pushed the door open. "What are you doing here again?" The family members inside recognized me immediately and stood up to scold me.
"Please don't misunderstand; let me explain," I said with a smile. "I happen to know a friend outside who is a feng shui master. I've invited him here to take a look at Fu Yuehua—just trying something different."
The family members exchanged skeptical glances upon hearing my words; Fu Yuehua's mother wiped her tears and said, "Anything is fine as long as my daughter can wake up."
Seeing that her mother spoke up, I quickly called out for Little Farmer to enter.
Little Farmer, usually serious and unsmiling, now wore an even graver expression as he scanned the room with furrowed brows; at first glance, it seemed like he meant business.
"This..." Fu Yuehua's father hesitantly began.
I understood what he meant and quickly took over the conversation. "This is my friend—he's a disciple of Zhou Bansian, a well-known local feng shui master. Although he's young, Master Zhou often travels far and wide; many local matters are handled by his disciples. Don't underestimate him."
Everyone in the room looked at Little Farmer with curiosity; Fu Yuehua's mother gazed at him like he was a savior, staring at him pitifully without daring to breathe.
Little Farmer entered without saying a word. After surveying the room for a while, he focused intently on Fu Yuehua lying in bed for what felt like an eternity, his brow furrowing deeply.
The room fell silent as everyone waited anxiously. After some time, Little Farmer sighed and turned around to walk back out.
"Hey, hey," as Little Farmer turned to leave, Fu Yuehua's parents suddenly panicked, especially Fu Yuehua's Mother, who rushed forward and grabbed Little Farmer's hand. "Master, oh no, Master, what happened to my daughter?"
I didn't expect such a strong reaction from the family. While I could understand their deep superstition, I was surprised by their urgency; it seemed they were desperate for any help.
Little Farmer was caught by the sleeve and found himself unable to break free. I hesitated to intervene, and everyone was left in a stalemate.
To his credit, Little Farmer quickly regained his composure within a minute or two. He turned around and shouted, "Commoners, step aside!" At the same time, he brushed off Fu Yuehua's Mother's hand from his clothing. He made some gestures that I couldn't comprehend, closed his eyes, and began to chant softly, "The crow calls out in the clouds; Thunder God, with thunder shakes the universe; Grandmaster displays great power; urgent as the law commands."
After stomping his feet a few times, he suddenly opened his eyes wide and stared directly at Fu Yuehua's Mother. "Your daughter is invaded by external evil. To restore her, it must fall upon a fated person." What kind of act was this?
"A fated person?" Fu Yuehua's parents looked even more confused.
"Yes, it's him," Little Farmer suddenly pointed at me.
As everyone's gaze turned towards me, I was taken aback. What did Little Farmer mean by that?
Little Farmer continued, "This person is the destined benefactor of this girl; only he can save your daughter."
"Ah," Fu Yuehua's parents looked at me awkwardly. They were clearly too anxious and had taken Little Farmer's words seriously.
"I've explained that I have nothing to do with this; please don't come looking for trouble," I hurriedly waved my hands and started walking out of the ward. I had only sought out Little Farmer to clarify whether this incident had anything to do with the supernatural; I never expected him to put on such a show.
Fu Yuehua's parents immediately grabbed my hand, pulling me back with pleading expressions.
"Only he can help you; you should earnestly ask him," Little Farmer seemed to be adding fuel to the fire.
"Aren't you still going to hold the military accountable?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Leader, please save Yuehua. We just want our child to wake up; we won't pursue military responsibility anymore. This child has suffered so much—just starting college and now..." Fu Yuehua's father covered his face, looking utterly helpless.
My heart softened at their plight, and my tone became gentler. "Actually, I'll do what I can for you. I just want to tell you that what happened to Fu Yuehua is indeed unrelated to the military. But I can assure you that I'm also investigating the cause of this incident. I don't know if it will help Fu Yuehua, but I will try."
With those words, hope visibly returned to Fu Yuehua's parents. I couldn't bear their desperation any longer and thought for a moment before giving them several hundred yuan that I had on me. "Consider it a small gesture from us instructors; she is also our student."
Fu Yuehua's parents expressed their profound gratitude as they accompanied us all the way to the elevator. Little Farmer maintained his demeanor throughout until we stepped into the elevator. "Company Commander, how did my performance go?" he winked at me just as the doors closed.
"What the hell! You've almost confused me completely. You little brat, what are you trying to do? Where did you learn all this nonsense?" I said irritably.
"Hey, Zhou Master has been around for so long, I've picked up a few tricks to get by. After hearing him talk so much, it just comes naturally. But today was a bit of an impromptu performance. Hehe, Company Commander, I noticed that family seems quite superstitious. I thought I'd give it a try, and surprisingly, it worked. They probably won't cause any trouble for our unit now," he replied with a grin.
"They won't cause trouble for the unit, but you've dragged me into this mess," I retorted with a frown.
"Well, I didn't want you and Jinghe to get into trouble over this; it wouldn't look good. You need to think of a way to help that girl," Little Farmer suddenly said, his smile fading.
"Why are you counting on me? Besides, what exactly did you see in the room?" I asked, feeling a bit displeased.
"Fu Yuehua's soul is still there; it's just a bit hazy and hard to see clearly. I have a suspicion," Little Farmer said thoughtfully, lowering his head.
"What is it?"
"She’s missing a soul fragment," Little Farmer lifted his head, his gaze intense.
To be continued, tomorrow will be even more exciting.
