I hurriedly hailed a taxi, and together with Jinghe, we rushed towards the school. Along the way, I briefly recounted the situation to Jinghe and asked him again if there had been any unusual occurrences with Fu Yuehua during the last few days of Military Training. After all, he was young. Jinghe knew that Fu Yuehua had jumped off a building, and he was almost in tears. He repeatedly assured me that there were absolutely no abnormalities; his attitude towards her was just like that of any ordinary student, and there wouldn't be any misunderstandings. Hearing this eased my mind a little. I had spoken rather harshly earlier, intending to scare Jinghe to see if he was hiding anything from me. Given his demeanor, I truly believed that Fu Yuehua had nothing to do with him. In my opinion, even if Fu Yuehua had a crush on Jinghe, she would never resort to suicide. Therefore, I felt that something was definitely wrong with Fu Yuehua. However, this was clearly not the time to discuss such matters. I could only hope that Fu Yuehua would be okay and that both the school and her family would handle the situation calmly and rationally; otherwise, it would become an inextricable issue.
Upon arriving at the school, I jumped out of the taxi and rushed with Jinghe straight to the Security Department. We hurried into the office building without even taking a moment to catch our breath. After glancing at the floor plan for office distribution, we dashed up to the third floor where the Security Department was located. Upon reaching the third floor and turning left, I noticed that a large portion of this floor belonged to the Security Department. There were two offices, and at the end of the hallway was a conference room with its door wide open; as soon as we entered the corridor, I saw it filled with people.
Taking a deep breath, I walked towards them with Jinghe. As soon as we stepped inside, I sensed that something was off. Fu Yuehua's counselor was sitting inside; upon seeing me, she stood up and said, "Company Commander Wang, you’re here." Just as she finished speaking, a tall middle-aged man also stood up and asked, "You must be Company Commander Wang; it's about time you arrived."
I hesitated before asking, "Who are you?"
The middle-aged man's voice boomed as he replied, "I am Li Section Chief from the Security Department."
"What is Fu Yuehua's condition?" I inquired.
"Very grim," he said. "She fell headfirst onto the ground and suffered a head injury; she has been sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. We have also called the police; they are currently conducting an on-site investigation." My heart sank; this was serious indeed. Before I could respond further, Li Section Chief raised an eyebrow and continued, "Her family is already on their way here. Before they arrive, we need to clarify some matters so we can provide them with an explanation; therefore, we need your assistance."
I realized we were entering a critical phase now. Hopefully, the school wouldn't try to shift responsibility onto us. I quickly stated, "I regret what happened to Fu Yuehua; however, I don't understand why you called me here for assistance. All I can say is that Military Training has already concluded; Fu Yuehua had an accident after it ended. The school should investigate what happened that day on-site for answers. Secondly, what I can tell you is how Fu Yuehua performed during Military Training and assure you that nothing during Military Training adversely affected her. In fact, due to health reasons, Fu Yuehua participated less frequently in the later stages of Military Training; you can verify this with her counselor and classmates."
I knew my words sounded harshly realistic and that I was clearly distancing myself from responsibility. But there was no other choice; this wasn't something I could bear alone, plus there was an issue of maintaining our unit's image. So on my way here, I had already thought through what to say: ultimately we would need to write a report regarding Fu Yuehua's performance during Military Training. This didn't worry me because Fu Yuehua had fainted once before in Old Building—at least no one could definitively say whether it was sleepwalking or some other organic issue.
As expected, after I finished speaking, the Security Chief frowned—clearly thrown off by my comments—and looked towards Fu Yuehua's counselor. She glanced at us and nodded in agreement: "What Comrade from the unit said is indeed correct; Fu Yuehua's condition is unstable and should be directly related to personal reasons; her classmates around her can testify to this without fear of any thoughts from her family."
"Then how did Fu Yuehua get into trouble during the final grenade toss?" The Security Chief interrupted the counselor directly.
My heart tightened; this Security Chief wasn't someone who would let things slide easily—he had already uncovered this information so quickly! I glanced at several of Fu Yuehua's classmates sitting nearby; they were likely the ones who informed him about it. What worried me most was when others brought this up because I knew that Fu Yuehua only started having issues after speaking with Jinghe. But this couldn't be shared with anyone! Although Jinghe had nothing going on with Fu Yuehua at that moment, it wasn't wise to create trouble for myself now. Steeling myself, I said, "It's precisely because Fu Yuehua seemed so ordinary that we didn't anticipate any problems; that's why she participated in live grenade tossing. If you're asking about this incident specifically, I'm also curious about why Fu Yuehua suddenly changed like this—could it be related to the school's environment? After all, she fainted in Old Building before—I heard rumors that students have jumped off buildings every year at this school."
As I spoke, I kept my gaze fixed on the Security Chief; sure enough, his expression shifted dramatically. "Company Commander Wang," he said sternly, "what do you mean by that? Are you suggesting there's something wrong with our school? You're an active-duty officer in your unit—do you really believe such things?"
I quickly interjected: "Well then, Section Chief, I'm not saying there's anything specific wrong with the school! What I'm implying is that since students have jumped off buildings every year in the past here, it indicates these unfortunate incidents could potentially occur again. I recommend a thorough investigation by the school; if necessary, they should handle this incident by referencing past cases."
The Security Chief stared at me for a long moment before finally asking, "How many years have you served in the military?"
"Less than three years."
"Tsk tsk, impressive. When I was your age, I was just a class monitor," the Security Chief said slowly.
"Oh, you are a military transfer officer," I realized.
He waved his hand dismissively. "Never mind. Since you're here, write a situation report on the circumstances during Fu Yuehua's Military Training period. Consider it a form of evidence."
"No problem," I immediately agreed, as this was something I had anticipated.
While the section chief went to get paper and pen, I hesitated and said, "Chief, I've helped out in the office and worked in security. If I may ask, as far as I know, the school had measures in place at the beginning, placing Fu Yuehua in the Reception House and installing surveillance cameras. This shows that the school was actually prepared. So, what happened?"
The chief turned around, his expression not looking good. He pointed to the computer on the desk and the few students nearby. "Aren't we currently asking them about the situation? They were all in the same dormitory during the incident. We've called everyone who was there to sleep over. And there's also surveillance."
If there's surveillance, why not check it? Just as this thought crossed my mind, footsteps were heard outside, followed by a familiar voice saying, "Check the surveillance; I want to see what happened."
Ah Huang! What a coincidence.
I quickly turned around just as Ah Huang entered. Upon seeing me, he exclaimed, "What the hell! You're everywhere!"
I awkwardly smiled and replied, "I'm one of the Military Training instructors here."
Two police officers followed Ah Huang into the room. He exchanged glances with them, and they immediately took everyone else out under the pretext of recording statements. I asked Jinghe to follow them out as well to see if he could help.
That left just me, Ah Huang, and the Security Department Head in the room.
"Captain Huang, how's it going?" The Security Department Head had been gaping in surprise at our acquaintance but now couldn't be bothered with explanations and directly asked Ah Huang for his assessment.
Ah Huang clearly held back some information from the Security Department Head and simply replied, "There are no signs of a struggle at the scene."
“No Signs of Struggle Suicide” Security Department Head was clearly not foolish.
Ah Huang ignored him and turned directly to me. “Sometimes I really fear you. Wherever you are, trouble follows. Old Wang, have you figured out what happened here?”
I understood Ah Huang's meaning. “It's very simple and clear; we have nothing to do with the girl who jumped.” That was all I needed to say.
“Is the surveillance ready?” Ah Huang asked Security Department Head with a frown.
“It’s right here.” Security Chief looked a bit frustrated, clearly feeling undervalued. Little did he know that in front of Deputy Captain of the Criminal Police Team, School Security Department Head was still not enough. Death of the Team Leader.
Ah Huang waved me over. “Old Wang, come take a look.” He walked toward the computer.
Security Chief seemed surprised. He looked at me helplessly, clearly unsure why I was being treated so well. After hesitating for a moment, he stepped aside to give me room.
As Security Chief opened the surveillance video, we focused intently on the screen, eager to see the real events unfold.
To be continued; the next part will be even more exciting.
