Sheng Xiong had left, and I found myself feeling bored again. Especially on the second night when Ah Huang came to see me. He told me that he had found Li Ping's hair on the floor of the break room. After comparison, it was confirmed that the third person's hair discovered by Zhou Tao on the vehicle belonged to Li Ping. The higher-ups had already agreed to arrest Li Ping, and Ah Huang had sent out a notice for assistance in tracking down the situation of retired warriors returning home in recent years. However, there was still no news. There was no movement at Li Ping's house or at Qiqi's place; Li Ping had not shown up anywhere.
By the third night, Ah Huang came to tell me that the Tibetan Mastiff at Li Ping's house had started barking and growling, likely because it was hungry. His judgment was that no matter how patient Li Ping was, he would have to show up soon.
I became even more anxious and insisted that Ah Huang take me out. Staying in the hospital was driving me crazy. I had secretly opened the bandage on my neck; it was healing well, but it felt like wearing a necklace with a red circle around it. Damn it, what did Li Ping use to strangle me?!
In the end, Ah Huang couldn't resist my persistent pleas and agreed to take me out for surveillance. There were two surveillance points: one at Qiqi's Pet Store and one at Li Ping's house. I chose Li Ping's house since the chances of him appearing there were greater.
The waiting at this surveillance point was incredibly boring. I followed Tian and four plainclothes police officers, hiding in a parked car outside Li Ping's house, waiting for half the night. From around six after dinner until one in the morning, there was no sign of activity at Li Ping's house—well, not entirely true; the dog had been barking non-stop.
Since I wasn't a professional, I dozed off in the back seat of the car until I suddenly heard Tian's phone buzzing. I opened my eyes just as Tian picked up the call.
"What? There's a situation at Liu Qi's house? Okay, we'll head over immediately! Oh, so Brother Wang and I will stay here? Got it!"
After hanging up, Tian turned to the officer in the passenger seat and said, "Quickly go to that car and head to Liu Qi's house! There's something happening over there! We'll stay here!"
The officer nodded quickly, opened the door, and ran toward another car not far away. Then I watched as that car started up and suddenly sped past us.
"What’s going on?" I asked Tian.
"Brother Wang, it seems there's been some movement with Yellow Team over there. To be cautious and prevent the suspect from escaping, they’ve shifted personnel over there, but they want us to stay here."
"I see!" I muttered to myself.
"Brother Wang, is your Li Ping really that formidable? Yellow Team seems quite concerned; they have four or five people over there—do they really think he can escape?" Tian asked curiously.
"He is indeed very formidable; his moves are lethal right from the start. I suspect he has military experience—probably reconnaissance or something similar. If you encounter him, be very careful!" I said while touching the two nunchakus tucked behind me, recalling the fight in that house which still left me shaken. "Moreover, he is extremely decisive; he strikes when necessary and runs when needed—without hesitation."
Last time, Ah Huang burst into the break room only to find the window wide open and no one in sight. It was likely that someone had jumped out to escape. At that moment, Li Ping thought I was a cop, fearing I would uncover some flaw or loophole of his. He suddenly attacked me, but when he missed, he realized the situation was hopeless and fled. This man was indeed ruthless.
Yet, it was this ruthlessness that left me feeling uneasy. He treated human life as if it were worthless; would he really come here for a dog?
With this thought in mind, I anxiously peered through the car window toward Li Ping's house. It was about thirty meters away, with some moonlight illuminating the area, allowing me to vaguely see movement at the front door. There were no trees near Li Ping's yard, providing a clear line of sight despite the darkness; everything was visible, which made things easier.
At that moment, Tian had also moved to the passenger seat, and we both looked out the window toward Li Ping's house. It was eerily quiet. This was Alley District, and after ten o'clock, there were very few people around—only the low growl of a dog could be heard. According to Ah Huang, there had been complaints about this dog recently, but Ah Huang had deliberately instructed the local officers not to handle it. I thought that if Li Ping didn't return soon, that dog might actually starve.
Just then, I saw a beam of light flash across the sky above Li Ping's yard! It was a flashlight! Someone was there! I reacted immediately. The dog in the yard had fallen silent; everything around us became eerily still. Was it Li Ping? If he was here, then who was causing trouble over at Liu Qi's place? I felt both alarmed and suspicious.
"Brother Wang, look!" Tian whispered in surprise.
"I see it! Is someone there?" I muttered to myself.
"Brother Wang, I want to go take a look," Tian said as he prepared to get out of the car.
"Don't split up! Let's go together!" I urged quietly. My mind raced with countless possibilities; it could be a diversion by Li Ping to lure us away from Liu Qi's place while he made his move here.
Regardless of the situation, something was happening, and I needed to find out what it was.
As Tian opened the car door, he said, "Brother Wang, let me report this to Yellow Team first."
"Not yet! We can't act without understanding the situation; we might fall into the enemy's trap." Honest as he was, Li Ping wouldn’t bother returning just for a dog. I still suspected that Li Ping was behind this scheme, trying to draw us here for some purpose related to Liu Qi.
I hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided that it would be best to check things out; speculating like this wasn’t going to solve anything.
"Wait for me." I pushed open the car door, pulled out my Nunchaku from behind, and began assembling it. In less than two minutes, the Kung Fu weapon was ready.
"Brother Wang, what is this?" Tian looked quite surprised.
"A tool for dealing with people!" I gripped the rod in my right hand and rubbed my neck with my left. Damn it, last time I almost got taken down by Li Ping. This time, I couldn't let him get away no matter what.
"Where's your gun?" I asked, because it's better to be safe than sorry.
"I... I'm still in training and haven't applied for a firearm yet," Tian stammered.
"Sigh!" I shook my head. If something really happened this time, it seemed I'd have to rely on myself.
We stepped out of the car and walked a few paces toward Li Ping's yard. Looking around, everything was eerily quiet; it seemed like nothing was happening outside. Just then, we saw what looked like the beam of a Flashlight flicker in the yard.
"Brother Wang, hurry!" Tian whispered urgently as he ran toward the gate of Li Ping's yard.
"Be careful!" I called out softly, but it was too late to stop him. Before I knew it, Tian had already dashed out about seven or eight meters ahead. I stomped my foot and followed after him.
I saw Tian suddenly kick open the yard gate and charge inside. I was only two or three meters behind when I heard him shout, "Who is—" His voice cut off abruptly. My heart sank; could it be that Li Ping was really there? Was Tian in trouble?
I quickened my pace and rushed through the gate!
As soon as I entered, I found the yard shrouded in darkness. Right in front of the gate lay a person on the ground, completely still. Panic surged within me; there was no time to assess the situation in the yard. I tucked the Steel Rod behind me and crouched down to check on Tian.
Just as my hand touched his body, he suddenly flipped over and sat up, his hands darting swiftly toward my neck before crossing over as he began to lean back violently.
Not Tian!? I was taken aback! Before I could react, I felt a tightening behind me and a sharp pain in my neck! I sensed the pressure from the stick! It was Da Hiroshi.
Again!? I was both shocked and angry! Instinctively, I kicked out with my left foot, while my left hand reached up to grasp the rope around my neck. At the same time, I pushed against the lower part of the stick with my right hand, desperately trying to force it away. The pressure around my neck eased significantly, and the person in front let out a surprised sound.
When I heard that voice, it was like a bolt from the blue—it was Li Ping!
How did he get here? When did he arrive!? I had no way of knowing. All I understood was that he was trying the same trick again, likely using something like a steel wire to choke me. Fortunately, the Refined Steel Rod was positioned behind my head, which caught the stick and pressed it tightly against my neck. Despite his efforts, I barely managed to escape this predicament.
I bent down and stood there, kicking desperately at Li Ping, who was lying on the ground. He seemed surprised but continued to tighten his grip around me for a while. However, seeing that it had no effect and still being kicked hard by me, he eventually loosened his hold and rolled away.
I quickly stepped back twice and tore off the second thing that had wrapped around my neck, throwing it to the ground. Just then, I felt a sudden rush of foul wind from my right—another attack!? Without any mental preparation, I turned sharply to the right. There wasn't even time to look; my right hand swung the stick wildly!
Thud! A muffled sound echoed as my Steel Rod struck something soft, followed by a low growl! What the hell!? It was Taotie. When was this dog released? I quickly stepped back again and glanced ahead; indeed, it was Taotie, its entire body hidden in the shadows of the courtyard wall. The moonlight couldn't reach it at all. If it weren't for those lantern-like red eyes, I would have found it hard to see its outline. Behind it lay someone—Tian—motionless; I couldn't tell if they were dead or alive. My heart raced with anxiety as I stepped back two more paces until my back pressed against the left wall of the gate.
Li Ping approached silently from that direction, while Taotie slowly moved closer as well. I silently lamented; although the courtyard gate was wide open, I didn't even have a chance to turn and run. Not only could I not evade Li Ping, but even Taotie would be too fast for me. It seemed that fighting against them while backed against the wall was my only option!
Moonlight poured in through the gate, spilling freely before me. I held my Steel Rod horizontally with both hands, my eyes scanning left and straight ahead at both man and dog. Fortunately, they stopped advancing when they were about two meters away from me—perhaps they saw clearly what I held in my hands thanks to the moonlight. Coincidentally, both opponents were hiding in shadows while I stood in the light; at that moment, a strange sense of joy welled up within me—this truly felt like a battle between light and darkness?! The three of us remained locked in this standoff for about thirty seconds until Li Ping finally spoke.
