"Do you know who it is?" I quickly asked. This was significant; if Liu Qi knew the dog's name, it meant her relationship with the owner was unusual. Furthermore, considering that Liu Qi rarely interacted with others, how could she suddenly have a mysterious friend? Also, Liu Qi came to the hospital only to see Professor Qin—how did this person in the hospital know her? Did they meet before or after Professor Qin?
My mind was filled with questions. Investigating this case felt like navigating a labyrinth of uncertainties, yet every now and then, a breakthrough would lead to even deeper mysteries! This brain-teasing case made me increasingly curious, driving my desire to uncover the truth.
Clearly, Ah Huang was also puzzled. He frowned and said, "The owner hasn't returned home yet, so we still don't know his identity. I've arranged for someone to keep watch; I believe we'll find out who he is soon."
At that moment, Lao Zhao pointed to the second floor. "Should we go up and take a look?"
Ah Huang glanced at the second floor and suddenly turned to me, patting my shoulder. "I've got a task for you—go up and sneak a peek to see if Liu Qi is waiting outside Professor Qin's office."
"Why me?" I shot Ah Huang an annoyed look.
"Because you're the most ordinary and won't attract attention."
Lao Zhao chuckled quietly to himself while I looked down at my outfit. Indeed, dressed in plain clothes, I would blend into the crowd.
Reluctantly, I nodded and turned to head up the stairs.
Once on the second floor, I peeked around the corner and scanned the area. Sure enough, Liu Qi was sitting outside Professor Qin's Emergency Room, looking at her phone. It seemed she hadn't been called in yet.
I quickly ran back downstairs to report to Ah Huang.
After thinking for a moment, Ah Huang pulled out something that looked like a pen from his pocket and glanced around. Then he walked over to a girl wearing a Head Nurse badge.
I watched as he took out his ID and showed it to her, saying something that made her cover her mouth in surprise before nodding with a smile. Ah Huang handed her the item he had, and after she tucked it into her uniform, she headed upstairs.
When Ah Huang returned, Lao Zhao couldn't help but ask, "Officer Huang, aren't we going up to take a look?"
Ah Huang smiled lightly, "No need for that. I've sent someone to eavesdrop on them."
"What do you mean?" both Lao Zhao and I asked in unison.
"I just had the Head Nurse from the outpatient department find a way to get into Professor Qin's Emergency Room and place the voice recorder I gave her in a hidden spot. That way, we can capture their conversation."
"What the hell! You can do that?!" I exclaimed in surprise.
"Desperate times call for desperate measures. We can't afford to be cautious if we want to solve this case. Besides, Professor Qin is currently a suspect as well," Ah Huang said calmly.
We stood downstairs for another ten minutes before we saw the Head Nurse on the second floor signaling to us from a distance. Ah Huang's face lit up with a hint of a smile as he realized it was done. He turned to us and said, "Let's go wait outside in the vehicle. After Liu Qi leaves, I'll go back to the Head Nurse and retrieve the recorder."
What a clever plan! I thought to myself. Ah Huang has matured a lot, but he's also become quite worldly.
Moments later, we sat in the vehicle outside the outpatient department, watching the hospital entrance. There was no back door; Liu Qi would definitely come out through the front after seeing Professor Qin.
Just as we were about to doze off from waiting, Ah Huang's phone rang again.
"Hello..." Ah Huang remained terse when speaking to his subordinate.
"Got it. Remember to take photos for evidence. After you develop them, send them over to the Mental Health Hospital and call me when they arrive."
After hanging up, Ah Huang turned back to us and said, "The dog's owner has appeared and entered the courtyard but hasn't come out since. My subordinate managed to take some photos; they'll bring them over after developing."
"Are we about to uncover the truth?" Old Zhao murmured.
"Captain Huang, we've made quite a few gains today. Don't be too stingy tonight," I joked.
Before Ah Huang could respond, Old Zhao suddenly exclaimed, "Look, Liu Qi is coming out!"
The three of us turned our gaze towards the hospital entrance, and sure enough, Liu Qi emerged from the outpatient department, walking on her high heels. She stood at the entrance, likely waiting for a taxi. It was too far to see her expression clearly, but she seemed to be fine.
After a while, we saw Liu Qi get into a taxi and leave the hospital.
"Come on, Old Wang, let's go to the first floor!" Ah Huang said as he pushed open the car door.
I had no choice but to follow him out, leaving Old Zhao alone in the car.
The Head Nurse at the outpatient reception was still assisting patients. Ah Huang quickly walked over and exchanged a few words with her. The Head Nurse immediately called over a nurse and gave her some instructions before the nurse headed up to the second floor.
Soon after, the nurse returned with a voice recorder that had been hidden in Professor Qin's Emergency Room. She handed it to the Head Nurse, who then passed it on to Ah Huang.
Ah Huang took the recorder and hurried back to us.
"Let's go back to the vehicle and listen."
Once we were back in the vehicle, Old Zhao noticed the recorder in Ah Huang's hand and his eyes lit up. "Is that a bug?"
"It's just a voice recorder. After charging it once, it can work continuously for three hours," Ah Huang explained.
He pressed the play button, and a faint murmur of noise filled the air; I recognized it as the sound of the recorder being turned on in the First Floor Lobby.
We rolled up all the windows and sat quietly, listening intently.
" Professor Qin!” There was also a knock on the door; it was the voice of the outpatient Head Nurse.
"Professor, are you still doing therapy? I just came to check if the hand sanitizer is out; I'll be leaving soon."
"Oh, wait a moment, thank you, Head Nurse."
"No need to mention it, it's my duty."
There was a brief pause in the conversation, likely while Professor Qin waited for the Head Nurse to leave. The Head Nurse was probably looking for the best spot to place the recording pen.
The outpatient Head Nurse really knows how to get things done, I thought.
After another ten seconds of silence, Professor Qin's voice resumed, "You have hypochondria. There's really no need for you to be so anxious. Trust in science; your health check-up showed nothing wrong. You've done all the necessary tests, so you can put your worries to rest."
"Doctor, really? Is everything okay?" a strong Hunan accent replied.
"Yes. If you're still concerned, you can have check-ups twice a year. That way, you'll have a clearer understanding of your health. Relax, distract yourself; spend more time with family and friends, explore your hobbies, and engage in social activities. Don't stay cooped up at home; you'll gradually feel better."
"Oh, I see. But what if I can't sleep at night?"
"I can prescribe you some medication."
After a moment, he continued, "Alright, that's it for now. You can go; I have another patient who needs me urgently."
"Okay, thank you, Professor."
A few seconds later, "Hey, what are you doing here? You should have called me beforehand! If I hadn't seen you in the registration system, you'd have been waiting for quite a while!"
"I... I don't know; I just suddenly came over," Liu Qi's voice responded.
Here it comes, the main character has arrived! We all focused intently.
"Well, if you're here, then you're here. How have you been lately?"
"My head still hurts sometimes, and my chest hurts too."
"You've had all the tests done and nothing's wrong. I suspect it's mostly just tension headaches."
"Oh."
"Have you been having trouble sleeping recently?"
"Sometimes yes, sometimes I sleep well."
"I see. You didn't make an appointment, and my schedule is quite full today. We can't proceed with the hypnosis treatment, so let me prescribe you some medication instead. It's traditional Chinese medicine, no side effects."
"Okay."
The voice paused.
After a while, "Alright, here you go. Go get your medicine, and remember to take it as prescribed."
"Oh."
Another pause followed. We exchanged glances, wondering how this conversation could be so ordinary in a medical setting. Just when we thought there would be no more sound, Professor Qin's voice rang out again, "Heartworm. Get your shots on time."
Huh? It seems that Professor Qin is quite concerned about Liu Qi. Working at a pet store inevitably involves getting scratched or bitten by cats and dogs; is he talking about rabies shots? I didn't pay much attention to it, and Liu Qi didn't respond either. Ah Huang pressed the stop button and looked at Lao Zhao.
Lao Zhao spread his hands, clearly having found nothing of value.
"Are we back in the dead alley again?"
The car was silent as Ah Huang muttered to himself, "Let's wait for the photos to arrive."
Old Zhao was not pleased. "What time is it? Aren't you going to treat us to dinner?"
Ah Huang chuckled awkwardly, "Alright, I know there's a Yang Yuxing nearby. Let's go there and consider it your labor fee."
"Haha, I want to drink! I want something nice to eat." When it came to food, Lao Zhao was like a child, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Ah Huang smiled helplessly, started the car, and drove toward the road.
Ten minutes later, we parked and arrived at the restaurant's lobby.
"How many gentlemen?" The waitress greeted us with a smile.
"Three, but we need a private room," Ah Huang said as he glanced around the lobby.
"A private room? Hehe, great! I like private rooms," Old Zhao beamed.
"Alright, please follow me," the head waiter led the way.
We were taken to a quiet room. Ah Huang handed me the menu, and I passed it to Lao Zhao. "Order whatever you like," I told him.
Lao Zhao took his time looking over the menu before starting to order enthusiastically. By the time the dishes arrived, I realized he had ordered enough food for five people. Fortunately, Ah Huang didn't seem to mind much.
Before long, the phone rang for Ah Huang.
"I've got the photos. Just wait, I'll go get them," Ah Huang said as he finished the call and headed outside.
"Hey, Officer Huang, don’t forget to come back!" Old Zhao mumbled with food still in his mouth.
I continued eating, wondering who this person could be.
In no time, Ah Huang returned with a stack of photos.
He placed the photos on the table. "You all take a look," he said.
I glanced at them and was instantly stunned. Was it him?!
