"Oh, I see. It's fine, it's fine. Have you given your statement yet?"
"Not yet, Qiqi is still being questioned." Jing looked at me, stood up, and grabbed my arm. "Brother Wang, I'm a bit nervous."
"It's okay, don't be nervous. It's just a simple questioning. Just tell them what you know."
"Oh, but what if I can't remember?"
"Just remember this: when the police ask you questions, answer truthfully and let them handle the rest."
"Oh." At that moment, Jing seemed very obedient, completely different from when I first met her. I sighed silently; it seemed that experiences could change a person.
We chatted casually in the interrogation room for a while. Before long, the door was pushed open, and a police officer entered. "It's your turn. Come with me," he said to Jing. She glanced at me, and I gently patted her arm to reassure her not to be too nervous. Jing took a deep breath and followed the officer out.
As soon as Jing left, another person walked in. I looked up and thought, isn't that Qiqi?
But something seemed off; she was wearing ordinary jeans and a t-shirt today, without any makeup, looking much more fresh-faced—completely different from the Nightclub Queen! However, her figure was still as stunning as ever.
She walked in with a slight frown and directly sat down in the chair across from me.
"Qiqi?" I tried calling out.
She lifted her head to glance at me but didn't respond.
"Is it really you, Qiqi?" I called again.
"It is. Who are you? Are you a police officer?" Qiqi brushed her long hair away from her face and looked at me.
"Huh?" I was taken aback; she didn't recognize me? Then it hit me—maybe the lighting in the bar was too dim, and since I hadn't introduced myself to her before, it made sense that she wouldn't recognize me.
Since that was the case, there was no need to continue the conversation. I smiled apologetically and turned my attention to my phone instead.
Seeing this, Qiqi also stared blankly outside. We sat in silence for about ten minutes before Jing returned.
"Hey, Qiqi, are you done asking?"
"Jing? What are you doing here?" Qiqi stood up in surprise.
"The police called me, asking about you," Jing replied.
"What did they say?" Qiqi seemed a bit anxious.
"Honestly, they asked me if we were at the bar together on a Friday night over a month ago. I couldn't remember clearly, so I just said I didn't recall. They also asked how I knew you, if I had been to your house, and some details about myself. After taking notes, they let me go."
"I see," Qiqi said thoughtfully.
At that moment, Ah Huang walked in from outside. "Are you done?"
"Yes, ready to go now?"
"Yeah, let's go! I'll treat you all to something delicious!" Ah Huang smiled and glanced at Qiqi. "Are you guys friends? Should we invite her along?"
I looked at Jing.
"Want to join us for dinner, Qiqi?" Jing asked.
Qiqi glanced at the uniformed Ah Huang and quietly said, "No, I have something else to do." She turned and walked toward the stairs.
Ah Huang stared at Qiqi's back until she disappeared at the top of the stairs before turning back.
I asked, "What's up, Ah Huang? Do you think there's something wrong with her?"
Ah Huang pondered for a moment. "I don't know, but I feel like she has something on her mind."
In my heart, I thought he had never seen her at the bar. If he had witnessed that side of her and then saw her like this, he would never believe they were the same person. Honestly, I had never seen two such different states coexist in one woman.
"Wait for me to change clothes; then we can go together," Ah Huang said.
Half an hour later, we were at a restaurant in front of the police station.
"Ah Huang, when did you issue the order?" I asked curiously.
"Thanks to you, I've been handling several cases. The higher-ups issued the order a month ago. Now, let me treat you to a meal; I can't let you pay," he replied.
"What about Old Bi and the others?"
"They're busy with their own matters. Come on, let's have a drink." Ah Huang gestured. "By the way, is this your girlfriend?"
"Oh, no, no. We're just friends. She's here to assist with the investigation, so I came to check on her and see you as well," I quickly explained, completely ignoring Jing's sulking expression.
"Alright then, just call me if you need anything in the future. There's no need for you to make a trip here; I know it's not easy for you to get out of the army."
"Sigh, don't remind me. I'm on leave right now—just for a week!" I sighed again. Jing's face lit up at this news; she probably thought that my leave meant more time together.
"Huh? Why? Aren't army leaves supposed to be a month long?" Ah Huang asked, puzzled.
I sighed once more. To be honest, I had been feeling down lately; it was hard to deny that I felt somewhat wronged and frustrated. Once I started talking, it was hard to stop. While eating, I shared with Ah Huang and Jing what had happened recently.
People outside the system didn't really understand military discipline, so both of them felt that the army was overreacting and expressed their sympathy for me.
I shrugged; it had already happened, and there was no point in dwelling on it. Besides, I knew I was at fault from the start, so I had nothing to say.
Just then, Ah Huang's phone rang. He picked it up and said, "Hello, this is..."
"What?" A moment later, Ah Huang frowned. "Got it. Make sure to follow up on this—check the time of disappearance, the location before they went missing, and who they were in contact with."
"What's going on?" I asked.
"Nothing much; just reported a case. Come on, let's continue eating," Ah Huang said.
Who would have thought that shortly after, another call came in for Ah Huang? After listening for a moment, his expression turned strange as he looked at Jing.
"Another person has gone missing," Jing said, looking at us in confusion. "What does that have to do with me?"
"Hmm?" I noticed Ah Huang's expression.
Ah Huang said lightly, "It's related to your friend, Qiqi."
Huh? Both Jing and I exclaimed at the same time.
"How do you know her? How long have you known her? What do you usually do together?" Ah Huang asked Jing seriously.
"We first met at the pet hospital, then ran into each other again at a bar. It's been almost six months now. After we got to know each other, we often went shopping together. We even planned to travel, but we never found the time," Jing replied, spilling everything like a bamboo tube pouring out beans.
"What does she do?"
"She runs a pet store and a pet hospital."
"Where is she from?"
"Northeast, from Harbin."
"Why is Harbin here opening a store and doing business?"
"How would I know?"
"Do you know where her shop is?"
"I do."
"Hey, Ah Huang, stop treating her like a criminal!" I couldn't take it anymore.
"Ha, it's just my professional habit. Sorry about that." Ah Huang chuckled, his expression relaxing considerably. "If you don't mind, take me to her shop so we can find her. It would save us from having to ask her again tomorrow."
"Oh, okay." At this point, Jing was completely stunned by Ah Huang.
As Ah Huang went to settle the bill, I patted her shoulder. "Don't be nervous; it's just a question. Even if Qiqi has something going on, you haven't done anything wrong, so what are you afraid of?"
"It's instinct! Aren't police officers supposed to deal with bad people?" Jing replied, pouting as she finally caught on.
I chuckled bitterly. "Police officer? Ah Huang is my younger brother; he can't pretend in front of me."
"Really?" Jing's eyes lit up.
Of course, I thought to myself; even his girlfriend got to know him through me!
Just then, Ah Huang walked over. "Brother, you should come along too. Since I'm on leave, it won't hurt to accompany me for a bit. I can drive you both back later."
I shrugged noncommittally. "Ask Jing; I'm free right now."
"Hehe, then let's cooperate with the police officer for your sake," Jing quickly returned to her usual self.
Ah Huang got into the car and took us along, with Jing guiding us as we drove straight to the store run by Qiqi.
It really was Qiqi's store! The sign reading "Qiqi's Pet House" hung high, illuminated by neon lights.
The shop was still open, brightly lit inside, and it seemed like there were still people there. I glanced at my watch; it was just before eight.
Ah Huang parked the car by the roadside, turned off the engine, and said, "Let's go. I appreciate both of you keeping me company."
Jing and I got out of the car and followed Ah Huang toward the pet store.
We hadn't even stepped into the pet store when suddenly, from a corner beside it, a large shadow sprang out and lunged at Ah Huang!
Ah! Jing screamed loudly.
I was caught off guard as well; before I could see what it was, I watched as Ah Huang suddenly dropped down and rolled to the side.
Instinctively, I pulled Jing back a few steps and steadied myself to take a look!
What the hell! A dog this big! That was my first reaction. My second thought was, is this really a dog? It was covered in black fur, all tangled up, with a fluffy mane on its head, resembling a lion. Its furry face showed no expression, just two red dots where its eyes should be.
The creature was enormous, nearly as tall as my waist and as long as a calf. It bared its teeth and let out low growls, scratching at the ground with its claws, struggling to pounce on Ah Huang. Fortunately, it was tethered by a thick chain behind it. From the distance, it seemed unable to reach Ah Huang, but Ah Huang was too sensitive and reacted too quickly, instinctively dodging away.
What kind of monster is this? I murmured to myself. I had never seen anything like it before!
Honestly, I didn’t know either. I stood in front of her, looking towards Ah Huang.
At that moment, Ah Huang had already stood up, brushing off the dust from his clothes. He walked over with an embarrassed smile and said, “This is a Tibetan Mastiff.”
Ah, so that’s what it is? No wonder it looks so fierce.
Just then, I heard someone shout, “Taotie! Don’t move!”
