Qiqi walked over gracefully, accompanied by a continuous stream of whistles. She tossed her long hair back and approached our table with a nonchalant smile.
She was indeed quite tall; even in high heels, she must have been over five foot seven. Well, I certainly couldn't compete.
Without hesitation, she pulled out an empty chair and sat down, taking out a lady's cigarette. After lighting it, she elegantly took a puff, causing Old Bi to practically lean in closer.
"Jing, is this your friend?" she glanced at me and Old Bi, speaking lightly.
"Yes, let me introduce you. This is Brother Wang, and that's Brother Bi; they're both soldiers," Jing replied with a smile.
At that moment, the waiter kept bringing over Flaming Red Lips Cocktails until our table was filled with them.
"These six drinks are from Boss Ding over there. He wishes you a pleasant evening and hopes you'll join him sometime," the waiter said to Qiqi.
Qiqi waved her hand casually. "Got it. Tell him thank you, and I'll drop by when I have time!"
"This is my friend, Qiqi. Now you all know each other, right? By the way, Qiqi, it seems the title of Nightclub Queen truly belongs to you," Jing said with a laugh.
She exhaled a puff of smoke in response. "I don't care about that title at all. Do I need others to evaluate me? It's just for fun, especially since there are free gold cards involved."
Old Bi was already itching to strike up a conversation. He anxiously glanced at Jing and then at Qiqi. "Hey there! Nice to meet you! Come on, let's get acquainted!" He raised his glass in greeting.
Qiqi shot him a glance. "I don't drink beer."
Old Bi felt a bit embarrassed but quickly adapted. He picked up a Blazing Red Lips cocktail instead. "Then let me offer this as a gesture; may you always be in good spirits!"
Qiqi smiled alluringly, nearly leaving Old Bi speechless. She reached for a drink and clinked glasses with him before downing it in one go. After taking another puff of her cigarette, she exuded an air of confidence that was hard to ignore.
Old Bi leaned in closer, trying to charm Qiqi. "Hey beautiful, where are you from?"
"From the Northeast, Harbin."
"Wow, a girl from the Northeast! Northeast girls have great figures! Qiqi, right? Can I dance with you for a bit?" Old Bi was clearly hoping to make a connection.
Qiqi shot him a sideways glance. "How tall are you?"
"One seventy-two, why?" Old Bi was taken aback.
"I don't dance with guys shorter than one eighty, or we can just be friends." With that, Qiqi turned her back on Old Bi and resumed chatting with Jing.
I nearly burst out laughing, but then I remembered I was also outside her preferred circle, which made me feel a bit downcast. It seemed I didn't even have the chance to say hello. So, Old Bi and I shifted our attention to the couples dancing nearby.
The atmosphere became awkward.
Just then, an upbeat song blared through the speakers, and the host shouted, "Let’s get this party started!" Men and women began to sway to the infectious rhythm in the open space.
A voice suddenly rang out beside us. "Excuse me, beautiful, would you like to dance?"
Old Bi and I turned to see who the unfortunate soul was.
To our surprise, it was a guy over one eighty tall, looking about our age. He had a handsome face and an elegant demeanor—definitely a sunny type of guy—and he was dressed casually.
"Hehe, of course!" Qiqi giggled and extended her hand to him. The handsome guy took her hand and led her into the dance floor.
Old Bi stared with his mouth agape, and after a moment, he lamented, "Old Wang, where did we go wrong? How could she treat me like this!"
Jing, standing nearby, covered her mouth and laughed. Old Bi glared at her resentfully. Jing innocently replied, "It has nothing to do with me. I promised to introduce you two, but I can't guarantee anything else. Oh, by the way, remember to keep your promise!"
I picked up a glass of wine and said leisurely, "Old Bi, calm down. Look at her; her conditions are so good. She came out to have fun, and there are plenty of people who want to be friends with her. Of course, she will have choices. You and I? I don't think we catch her eye."
"Where are we lacking?!" Old Bi protested.
"Well, there are a few reasons. Women often overlook men for these reasons: First, their appearance doesn't match up; second, they lack personal ability and potential, which makes them feel insecure; third, their financial situation doesn't provide a sense of security; fourth, their intelligence or emotional quotient is too low to get along with."
"What the hell! Just because I'm a bit short! Do I need to be six feet tall? She's not that tall either! Besides, I meet all the other criteria!" Old Bi argued.
"Brother, pay attention to the order of my points. Going out for fun isn't about finding a good husband for marriage. You've already been passed on the first point; who has the time or mood to give you a chance to get to know you better afterward?"
Old Bi was momentarily stunned.
I chuckled and said, "Alright, don't be so down. Your future wife isn't any worse than her. Look at you; when you come to the nightclub, she doesn't even notice you. She used to have fun but is now settling down to be a good wife and mother. I think that's pretty good! Clearly, you have many qualities that would make her give up some aspects of her life for you. Not to mention, in terms of personality, I think your future wife is quite nice."
Jing burst out laughing. I looked at her in confusion as she said, "Brother Wang, you're always so good with words!"
"Hehe, I'm just speaking the truth." I pointed at Qiqi, who was dancing closely with a handsome guy and chatting enthusiastically. "Even if she becomes friends with you, I think it would be hard for you to keep her in check. A girl like that has a strong personality and won't be easily tied down."
"That's true!" Old Bi seemed quite carefree now. After being moody for a while, he went over to flirt with a girl at the nearby table.
"Old Bi is actually quite fun," Jing leaned closer.
"Well, he is also a person of strong emotions, oh no, a person of character," I said deliberately misphrasing it with a serious tone.
"Ah! Brother Wang, you are so naughty!" Jing playfully scolded me with a light punch.
I chuckled. After spending time together, I actually considered Jing a good friend. Old Bi was also on friendly terms with her; she was a nice person, and having her as a girlfriend would be great.
However, I always felt like something was missing. Was it because my first love had such a big impact on me? I wasn't sure.
"Brother Wang, should we go dancing?" Jing asked gently.
"Ah? I can't dance," I replied honestly. I really couldn't dance; that was the truth. Especially in that chaotic environment, I felt awkward and embarrassed. I actually enjoyed watching the various scenes in the dance floor. Look at that guy over there; his hand is all over that beautiful woman's backside. How sleazy!
"Brother Wang, I want to ask you a question," Jing suddenly said softly beside me.
"What is it?" I casually lifted my drink and took a sip.
"Brother Bi, did your girlfriend break up with you after you enlisted? Why? Are you still hung up on it?"
I turned to look at her and smiled. "That's actually three questions, isn't it?"
Honestly, I didn't like to share my emotional world with anyone. Even during the time when my first love called to break up, aside from Old Bi, I hadn't talked to anyone about it.
I wasn't like some people who would cry and complain everywhere; I just dragged Old Bi along to practice martial arts whenever I had free time. Old Bi must have been annoyed by me.
"I'll tell you what," I said. "You drink three glasses of wine, and I'll answer one of your questions!"
"You're so annoying!" Jing pouted.
I felt a wave of relief as I dodged her words.
But who would have thought that Jing would turn around and pour herself three glasses of wine, downing them like water? She turned back to me, her face flushed.
What the hell!
I was taken aback. "Is it okay now?"
Great, I had fallen into my own trap.
I pondered for a moment before answering her question indirectly. "At first, when we were together for so long and had been through so much, how could I let go? Especially the way to contact each other; I knew I couldn't get through on the phone, but I still couldn't bring myself to delete the number. Then I realized that if I didn't delete it, how could I ever move on? In the end, I discovered that it didn't really matter whether I deleted it or not. Every relationship is just a process in life. After the rain, the sun still shines; it's undeniable that it once rained. It remains in a corner of my heart, and we live in parallel worlds from then on, never to intersect again."
"Actually, many things are like that saying about perception—first seeing mountains as mountains and water as water, then seeing mountains not as mountains and water not as water, and finally returning to see mountains as mountains and water as water again. It's a cycle and an elevation of understanding."
Jing blinked with her watery eyes and thought for a moment before saying, "That's too profound; I don't understand."
I smiled. "Time will help you understand."
Jing turned to pour herself more wine, but I quickly blocked her. This was not good; getting drunk would lead to trouble.
I swiftly changed the subject. "Hey, how did you meet Qiqi?"
Leaning back in her chair, Jing looked toward the venue. "Actually, we met here. Later on, my dog got sick, and when I took him to the Pet Store for treatment, I found out she owned the Pet Store. We gradually started hanging out."
"Ah, I see. I couldn't tell; I thought she was a professional model or something," I said, a bit surprised.
"Pretty much. Sometimes she also does some modeling for magazines, posing and all that," Jing seemed uninterested in the topic and started to zone out.
"Hey, Jing, I'm leaving!" At that moment, Qiqi came over, linking arms with the guy.
"This is Zhou Tao, my boyfriend for tonight!" Qiqi winked at Jing.
The guy named Zhou Tao greeted Jing and said to Qiqi, "I'm going to hang out with some friends. Wait for me."
"I'll head out first. Remember the place I told you about," Qiqi released Zhou Tao and swayed her hips toward the door, drawing another round of gazes on her back.
At this moment, Old Bi returned as well, looking dejected; it was clear he hadn't had any luck.
"We should head back too, Jing. It's getting late; you should go home," I glanced at the clock; it was already 11:30.
