Half an hour later.
I forced myself to suppress the violent pounding of my heart and my heavy breathing as I crouched down, watching the Red Army Guard patrol back and forth in front of the forest. I took a deep breath and whispered, "Wait for my command before charging out!"
Behind me, Xuanhua, Sheng Xiong, Jinghe, Wu Chao, and the others were all lying on the ground, pressing their mouths against the grass as they gasped for air.
I had indeed made the right bet; between the forest and Hilltop was the Red Army Command Center. However, I chose not to charge in with the convoy.
There were two reasons for this decision: first, there would definitely be lookout guards on Hilltop, and we would be easily spotted. With just three trucks and one tank, there was no way we could break through. Second, even if we did manage to get inside, it would be difficult to locate the Red Army operational command center among all those tents; it was impossible to search them one by one, and by the time we found it, our people would have suffered heavy losses.
Thus, a surprise attack was our only option! That's right! I divided our forces, selecting a dozen or so individuals dressed in Red Army uniforms to follow me while I entrusted command to Beta, who would lead the convoy toward the Red Army command post from the front.
I got out of the vehicle early and took a long detour, marching quickly to the northern edge of the forest next to the Red Army Command Center, quietly lurking within.
However, infiltrating came at a cost; the Red Army's vigilance was extremely strict. As I expected, there were also Red Army sentries hidden in the forest. If we hadn't been wearing Red Army uniforms all along, we would have been "killed" long ago. Even so, we paid a price of two "casualties": as we approached the last hidden sentry in the forest, two of our Vanguard members were ambushed and had their armbands torn off at gunpoint. Of course, those guards were quickly subdued by us before they even had a chance to draw their weapons.
The closer we got to success, the more excited I became. After successfully breaking through three defensive rings, we reached the edge of the forest. Through the grass, I could see large Military Tents ahead, with Red Army officers and soldiers bustling in and out, each looking tense and hurried—this was undoubtedly the Red Army Command Center!
I let out a sigh of relief! Success was within reach! Even our accompanying Observer began to show signs of excitement; I noticed his hand holding the recorder trembled slightly. Perhaps he realized he was witnessing something incredible unfold. I remembered how reluctant he had been when he was first assigned to follow us; that expression had been clear on his face.
I turned my gaze forward. Through the scattered tents, I could see far off near Hilltop. It must be coming soon! I thought.
Indeed, I was waiting for that moment when Beta led his men in a frontal assault. It would be best if they could get in; even if they couldn't, it would greatly divert the attention of the Red Army, creating opportunities for us dozen or so people.
Hurry up! Hurry up! The forced march had exhausted us all; I knew everyone needed rest. Yet I hoped for Beta's convoy to launch an attack soon. Time was not on my side; I had no idea how things were going at the Blue Army Command Center. All I could do was do my utmost to take down the Red Army Command Center as quickly as possible—perhaps then we might still have a chance at victory.
Just then, a sharp whistle pierced through the air. "Enemy forces detected!" someone shouted loudly.
Through a gap between tents, I saw a convoy rushing toward us in the distance—that was Beta leading his Brothers! They had arrived!
The nearby Red Army officers suddenly sprang into action, running toward the direction of the convoy.
Gunfire erupted from atop Hilltop. "Tat-tat-tat!" The sound continued like a warning shot or a call for guards to defend.
Suddenly, roaring engines appeared on both sides of the forest. I was taken aback and looked up; it turned out that four or five tanks were ambushed at the outer edge of this forest, now revving their engines as they charged down toward Hilltop.
My heart sank!
It was just a tank, what should I do?
"Go!" Without thinking too much, I glanced around to see no one was nearby, and quietly urged my comrades to follow me as I darted out and hid behind a tent. Peeking inside, I saw it was empty.
The brothers followed closely behind, pressing tightly against the tent.
I peeked out again; people were surging forward, and armed individuals were rushing out from every tent. I let out a sigh of relief and signaled for everyone to follow me, taking advantage of the chaos to slip out.
Now I needed to find the Command Tent! Which one was it?
Just then, I heard a commotion and instinctively turned to look. A plume of red smoke rose up; a Red Army tank had been hit!
It was Beta's doing! I stopped in my tracks and looked up—it was him! I saw Beta's tank, marked with the Blue Army insignia, maneuvering wildly about two kilometers away, its turret swiveling back and forth. I knew they were using simulated laser beams to target the enemy tanks.
Behind the Beta Tank was a large group of my warriors! They had all switched to infantry mode, executing a coordinated attack they had never trained for before.
The sound of heavy machine guns erupted! It was from the Red Army, and I couldn't help but stare at the battlefield in the distance.
Suddenly, I saw red smoke billowing from the Beta Tank as it came to an abrupt halt! It had been hit! This meant it was deemed destroyed and could no longer participate in the battle.
Another tank nearby also emitted red smoke; Beta had managed to hit the enemy at the last moment!
My heart sank again as I stood frozen. Without tank cover, how could those Brothers make it across?
Yet I watched as they charged past Beta's tank, resolutely brandishing their weapons.
My eyes grew misty, but this wasn’t the time for sentimentality; I had to complete my mission.
I steeled myself and led my brothers in search. Fortunately, amidst the chaos, no one seemed to notice us.
The gunfire gradually dwindled until it completely ceased. I knew that meant Beta's forces had been wiped out.
I didn't have time to grieve. I forced myself to stay calm and find the Red Army Command Center.
At that moment, I heard a voice.
"Search for any remaining enemies and ask these people where they came from!" A Colonel emerged from a large tent nearby, shouting loudly. Yes, this was the operations command center! Just as he turned to go back inside, I caught a glimpse of many people within, along with military maps hanging on the walls and a sand table in the middle of the tent. Looking up, I noticed a long wire extending from the top of the tent—there was no doubt about it!
"Yes! Three Teams, follow me! Second Squad, stay on guard!" came a response.
After a minute or two, I cautiously peeked out. There were significantly fewer people at the entrance now—only about ten or twenty left.
This was my chance! Suddenly, I threw out the only smoke grenade I had found on the Special Forces Company Commander of the Red Army. The grenade landed in the open space between the command tent and exploded with a few pops, releasing a light puff of smoke that quickly thickened.
The soldiers guarding the tent became agitated. "Another enemy attack!" "Protect the command center!"
"Don't panic! Everyone push out to search!" someone shouted—probably an officer.
Just come out! As long as you step away from the tent a little, we’ll have our opportunity, I thought silently.
As the smoke began to dissipate, I vaguely saw dozens of figures scattering in various directions, searching for our traces.
"Charge!" I shouted desperately. "Follow me to that tent! Even if just one of us gets in there! A burst of fire could change the outcome of this battle! Let's go all out!"
"Let's go all out!" "Charge!" more than ten voices echoed back; this was our last gamble.
I was the first to rush out, shooting wildly as I ran. The others followed me in a triangular formation, firing as they advanced.
As the smoke gradually cleared, I realized something alarming: despite my barrage, not a single Red Army soldier had fallen; instead, they dropped their weapons and charged toward us.
Logically speaking, after such a spray of bullets, at least a few should have gone down, right? But surprisingly, these Red Army soldiers disregarded all rules; those who should have been hit rushed toward us silently. Two or three of them grabbed hold of one of us and began grappling on the ground!
"Don't shoot! Charge through!" I yelled. The Red Army had gone mad. I wasn't at the point of losing my mind yet; at this close range, what if someone got accidentally shot? Military exercises and real combat were different—these soldiers were my comrades too!
"Twenty meters left! Charge!" I shouted as I ran.
I charged to the front, desperately shaking off a few pursuers. Suddenly, I heard a shout from behind—"Hey!" It was Jinghe's voice. I glanced back and saw Jinghe pinned to the ground by two burly Red Army Soldiers. Xuanhua tried to help him, but two or three others surged forward, entangling him.
"Go on! Don't worry about us!" Xuanhua shouted loudly.
I steeled myself and yelled, "Charge! Don't stop!" Turning back to run, I unexpectedly collided with two people head-on. One grabbed my arm while the other twisted my neck, throwing me heavily to the ground.
Behind me were Sheng Xiong and Murong Qian, running side by side. When they saw me fall, they hesitated for a moment. I shouted at them, "Don't stop! Keep going! Charge through!"
One of the men on top of me tried to get up and chase them. I hooked my leg around him, tripping him back to the ground. With all my strength, I dragged the Taxi Soldier off me and lunged forward, pinning his legs down.
Looking back, I realized only Sheng Xiong and Murong Qian had made it through. The rest of our brothers were all tangled up with the Red Army Soldiers. At that moment, everyone was caught in a chaotic melee; gunfire no longer suited the battlefield as we rolled on the ground, grappling with each other, none willing to let go!
Just then, three stocky Red Army Guards emerged from somewhere and stood shoulder to shoulder at the tent entrance, blocking their path.
Murong was a bit faster and had already reached the front. Just as he was about to be caught by the three guards, Sheng Xiong let out a fierce roar and accelerated forward. He grabbed one Red Army Soldier with each arm and then tackled the last one in front of the tent. As he fell to the ground, he shouted with all his might, "Murong, it's all up to you now! Charge in! Don't let us lose face for a year!"
