The gunfire across the river grew increasingly intense, and the individuals in Blue Army uniforms finally lost their composure. They began to turn their weapons toward the opposite bank, seemingly preparing to launch an assault.
At that moment, a sergeant stood up and shouted, "Halt! Which unit are you from?"
Hearing this, I was almost certain that these were impostors posing as Blue Army. If they were truly Blue Army, they would have opened fire long ago without asking questions.
"I am Zhang Dejiang, a staff officer from Red Army Headquarters! I have been ordered to coordinate with Sun Guangyu, the Deputy Battalion Commander of Guard Battalion, to encircle the remaining Blue Army forces in this area! Here is my identification!" I tossed Zhang Dejiang's Officer ID over. At this distance, with helmets on, it was impossible to see clearly, and since the ID photo was taken in regular uniform, it would be hard for anyone to tell who was who in our current state.
The sergeant quickly threw the ID back at me. "Good to see you, Officer Zhang! We are not Blue Army, but part of the N Military District Special Operations Brigade, tasked with eliminating the Blue Army forces along this route. You must be from the Marine Corps, right? Come help us take down the enemy Red Army across the river; there’s an underwater crossing that needs to be destroyed!"
Damn it! They really are dressed as Red Army special forces! I was furious! I had almost been fooled!
I straightened up and exclaimed, "Damn it!! It's the Allies! You scared me! I thought you were Blue Army! Just wait, I'll gather my people!"
I turned and tossed the radio to Sheng Xiong, whispering to him, "Get On the Vehicle and all the Brothers over here. Let’s see how I can blend in; don’t let any of these guys slip away! And tell Beta to stay out of sight; we can't expose ourselves!"
Sheng Xiong nodded and bent down to run back. After he finished giving instructions, I swaggered over while Xuanhua silently followed behind me.
"Who’s in charge here?" I scanned the area and noticed there were more than ten people by the riverside. At that moment, a lieutenant with face paint stood up.
"Officer Zhang?! I’m the Commander of the Fourth Company of the Special Operations Battalion. It looks like there are over a squad of enemy troops across the river. How many do you have? Three or four people went over to scout but got shot at by Blue Army right away; there’s no doubt they’re dead. It happened so suddenly; I really don’t understand what went wrong with our disguise."
I looked at this Company Commander with newfound respect. I had set up an ambush with a squad on the other side, and for him to make such a quick assessment showed he had some skill.
"We have about a company here. Do you know why you can’t get across? You must not have grasped the password for Blue Army, which is why you were recognized! Don’t force your way through here; it won’t do much good. Watch me—I know the password for Blue Army!” I said mysteriously to this Company Commander.
"What do you mean?"
"We wiped out a group of remaining Blue Army forces and obtained their password. I've even had several people disguise themselves as Blue Army, but for convenience in our operations here, some of us are wearing our own camouflage on top. Now let me trick them into letting us pass!" I began to take off my Navy camouflage.
Seeing my underlying Blue Army uniform, the Company Commander looked at me in confusion. I smiled at him and said, "Don’t believe me? Then let me go first; you can follow behind! Don’t waste time—there's another group of remaining Blue Army forces chasing after our command post, and they’re quite numerous with strong firepower. The Control Department is taking this very seriously and has sent an Observer with us. So we must intercept and eliminate them before they arrive! Brothers, join us!"
Truth and falsehood intertwined as I casually glanced at the Observer recording everything behind me. The members of the Red Army Special Operations Brigade clearly noticed the Observer, which should have deepened their trust in me.
Honestly, my heart raced with uncertainty. I wondered if I could deceive them; if I were exposed, I would be taken down alone, leaving my brothers without a leader, which would surely jeopardize our mission!
I pretended not to look at the Company Commander, forcing myself to remain calm as I slung my Type 95 rifle over my shoulder. Perhaps this subtle action eased the Company Commander's last doubts. Although he still hesitated a bit, he likely couldn't fathom that I would dare to act this way, or perhaps he was completely convinced of my identity. In the end, he nodded and gathered his men to follow me at a distance toward the riverbank.
I patted Xuanhua and gave him a signal to keep an eye on things, indicating that we should wait until all the Special Forces had crossed the bridge before taking action.
We slowly approached the Underwater Floating Bridge. I stepped onto it first, while the Special Forces Soldiers formed a tight circle at the edge of the bridge, keeping watch all around. They truly lived up to their reputation!
At that moment, all the members of the Red Army Special Operations Team had crossed the river and stood on one side, seemingly aware that they had all "fallen."
I turned back to see my Brothers rushing toward us from behind, but they still had some distance to cover. However, both the Blue Army and Red Army uniforms were present, so it was likely that these Special Forces would see them and become even more convinced of our identities. This distance should allow us to remain undetected. The tanks from Beta hadn't arrived yet; they must have been waiting for my command while remaining concealed.
I quickened my pace, intentionally creating more distance between us. As soon as we crossed the bridge, I shouted loudly, "Don't shoot! Friendly fire! Friendly fire! We're back now! We're one of you!" I emphasized "now" and "we" heavily.
After a while, a voice called out from across the way: "Password!"
I shouted back confidently, "Pudding!"
There was no response from across the way. I turned back and made a 'K' gesture to the Squad Leader, urging him to push his men forward while I accelerated ahead.
The Special Forces, seeing that nothing was amiss on the bridge, quickly stepped onto the Floating Bridge and sprinted toward us. They probably understood that as long as they rushed over, they would be safe.
I paid no mind to the "fallen" Red Army Special Forces on one side and scrambled up the slope. Looking back, I saw the last vigilant Special Forces member turn and step onto the Floating Bridge.
I let out a loud laugh. "Aren't you monkeys going to shoot?!" With that, I raised my Type 95 and began firing wildly at the River Surface.
Just as my words fell, over a dozen people stood up behind me, their machine guns and rifles roaring in unison. The last of them, Xuanhua, had also reached the riverbank by this time and joined in firing at the Special Forces on the Floating Bridge, looking as if they wanted to empty every bullet they had.
The people on the bridge were all stunned, frozen in place. The Company Commander first looked shocked, then confused, and finally angry, his eyes blazing as he stared at me.
I raised my hand high to signal a ceasefire and shouted, "Alright! The Red Army is all down! Brothers, clean up the battlefield!"
The soldiers across from us charged over with a roar, some grabbing weapons while others searched for supplies. They seemed overly excited. Of course! Special Forces—who could have imagined that the Engineer Corps could defeat the Special Forces? Heh heh heh, it was worth it, I thought to myself.
At that moment, Beta's tanks and trucks rumbled to the riverbank, ready to cross the Floating Bridge.
When I reached the riverbank to assist, the Squad Leader stood there empty-handed, glaring at me with frustration. I walked over and patted him on the shoulder. "Buddy, in a real fight, my company might not be able to take on your entire platoon. But all's fair in war! The Special Forces should be even more cunning! When I first approached you guys, you should have opened fire and taken me out! Even if it was a friendly fire incident, it wouldn't have affected the overall situation. Now, I'm really going to raid your command center!"
The Squad Leader huffed angrily without responding. I smiled and ignored him, directing the trucks up the slope. There was no time to retrieve the Floating Bridge; we had to leave it behind.
Indeed, the equipment of the Special Forces was impressive! A pile of gear, including some I couldn't even name—oh, and high-performance Dynamite Packs!
After directing everyone to clean up the battlefield and regrouping our forces for transport, I instructed the driver to head northwest quickly; that was likely where the Red Army Command Center was located.
The show was about to get exciting! I looked up at the sun hanging high in the sky; I hadn't realized it had already reached noon.
Less than half an hour into our drive, the driver slowed down. "Company Commander, look!" he pointed outside. I had already seen it—the grass outside had been flattened into a wide path by tank treads, with crushed grass and churned-up mud indicating that a tank unit had passed through here.
This was precisely where the Red Army's tanks were advancing!
I unfolded the map again and carefully examined the surrounding terrain. It became clear that we were now just 0 kilometers from crossing the great river.
The Red Army's forward command center couldn't possibly keep moving with their main force! It would be unsafe and impractical for command; they would definitely find a spot after crossing the river to set up camp. I stared at the map, pondering where that might be.
My finger moved slowly across the map, eliminating possibilities centimeter by centimeter until finally stopping at a location: this spot had both woods and a hilltop. Setting up tents at the base of the hill would provide excellent concealment from aerial reconnaissance while allowing for timely detection of any approaching enemies. I bet that the Red Army Command Center would be right here.
That's right! Based on years of textbook-like conventional thinking, I was sure that personnel from the Red Army General Staff would choose such a place to establish their command post and arrange their defenses according to regulations.
I began to feel a surge of excitement. Until now, I had remained calm throughout this journey, but the realization that the Red Army Command Center might be right in front of us stirred something within me.
Perhaps it was the anticipation of the fierce battle ahead! We took a detour, and if nothing unexpected happened, Sun Guangyu's guard troops must have already arrived at the Red Army Command Center. They were likely preparing for our arrival, but I knew we had to go; this would be a bloody fight!
I took a moment to compose myself and pressed the intercom button.
"Brothers, please pay attention! Please pay attention!"
I took a deep breath and continued, "We are getting closer to the Red Army Command Center! It will be heavily guarded! Everyone, prepare for a fierce battle; remember, this is not just a drill but a reversal battle starring us!"
"Understood!" came the response over the intercom.
"Let's move!" I shouted.
The convoy surged toward the location of the Red Army Command Center. My mind raced—could we really charge in like this? I had to ensure that our strike was successful! If we failed, there would be no chance for a comeback!
In that moment, a bold assault plan suddenly formed in my mind.
