I checked the equipment once more and instructed the "fallen" Drill warriors to supervise each other in place. With Zhang Sheng and the others, we advanced towards the Passage again.
The light began to brighten, but after walking for a short while, a thick fog rolled in. Just when visibility had improved slightly, it started to worsen again. I knew that the high humidity near the sea made fog a normal occurrence at this time, but it had its pros and cons. The thick fog would slow down the Red Army's marching speed, potentially buying us some time. However, on the flip side, with our communication lost for so long, the Blue Army would surely send planes to scout. Yet, given the conditions, it was uncertain whether the planes could even take off or see anything if they did.
Thus, we cautiously made our way forward. To avoid losing our direction, we formed a staggered line, each of us spaced a few meters apart. The leftmost member was close to the cliff as we moved toward the Passage in a net-like formation. I positioned myself in the middle of the group, with Dabao on my left and Zhang Sheng on my right.
During this time, the Red Army's "Dog Mom" called out to the dogs again. Dabao managed to brush it off as before; it seemed we were not in immediate danger of being exposed. However, we also hadn't heard any valuable intelligence. It appeared that we needed to secure a Red Army radio.
As we moved forward, the fog thickened further. Everything around us turned into a white blur, making it feel as though I was the only person left in existence. I could no longer see Dabao or Zhang Sheng standing just three or four meters away from me. To prevent getting separated, I had to call out to gather everyone together.
Should we wait for the fog to clear before moving on or proceed now? I hesitated because if we pressed on now, we might run into Blue Army troops stationed at the Passage or newly landed forces. But if we stayed put and let time slip away, I felt reluctant.
After much contemplation, I had to make a decision: time was tight; we had to keep moving! Even if I had to rely on a compass for direction, I would lead everyone toward the Passage. Even if we encountered Red Army forces, our disguises could buy us some time; we could adapt as needed. Worst case scenario, even if we faced unexpected trouble with the Red Army, it wouldn't matter too much. My goal was simply to stir up chaos and hold back their advance; not gathering intelligence was secondary.
So we stumbled forward for less than ten minutes when suddenly a voice came from within the mist ahead: "Halt! Who goes there!? Password!"
Dabao instinctively raised his 95 rifle, but I quickly pressed down his muzzle; now was not the time for force since we couldn't ascertain enemy numbers. Moreover, as we got closer to the Passage, enemy presence would increase—any gunfire would give away our position.
I shouted back, "It's us! Searching ahead for Vanguard!"
There was silence for two or three seconds before I heard the sound of a bolt being pulled back followed by a cold voice asking, "How could Vanguard return so easily? Password!?"
"Which unit are you from? I'm Squad Leader Sun Guangyu of Amphibious Forces Marine Corps Third Battalion Seventh Company! I have injured personnel who need evacuation for treatment!" I felt urgency rising; it seemed this time it wouldn't be easy to deceive them, so I resorted to fabricating a story to divert their attention.
After another moment of silence from across the misty expanse, I tapped Zhang Sheng and quietly instructed him to prepare everyone for combat while pulling Dabao aside to whisper a few instructions in his ear.
Just as I finished organizing our response, several figures emerged from the fog ahead.
The leader wore a camouflage uniform adorned with Captain rank insignia. He was of medium height with a round face that appeared simple and honest; however, his sharp eyes betrayed his astuteness. He stood two or three meters away from us and asked, "Where are the injured? What's their condition?"
As he spoke, I noticed that all of them held their 95 rifles firmly with both hands slightly lowered—a sign of readiness that sent a chill down my spine. Their alertness was high and should not be underestimated.
I took a deep breath and looked at him. "Brother, which unit are you from? Can you help find a medical team to treat my buddy here? He twisted his ankle while we were searching along the cliff!" I pointed at Da Bao.
At that moment, Da Bao was already following my instructions, keeping his right foot off the ground and leaning against Jinghe, looking quite dejected.
"Shizhi Guard Battalion, Deputy Battalion Commander Lu Xing!" The round-faced Captain frowned as he looked at Da Bao. Suddenly, he put down his gun and walked over, bending down to examine Da Bao's right leg.
I was taken aback; I hadn't expected Lu Xing to be so serious. I quickly stepped in front of him and lifted Da Bao onto my back. "Leader, no need for you to carry him. I'll handle it. Just point us to the field hospital!"
I said this first, deliberately trying to provoke him a bit. If he insisted on coming over, it would seem like he wanted to personally carry the injured soldier. Besides, field hospitals are usually near the command center. If we could really find one, well then, taking out the command center wouldn't be too far-fetched either. At that moment, I recalled scenes from TV shows where Blue Army soldiers wiped out the Red Army Command Center in one fell swoop. It didn't seem impossible; I couldn't help but commend my own cleverness.
Sure enough, he hesitated for a moment before standing up. "The field hospital hasn't been set up yet, but there is a rescue station nearby, just a little to the left of Passage. I can have someone take you there."
I let out a sigh of relief; this was good news. As long as he didn't notice anything unusual about us, we could slip by and figure things out later before coming back to deal with them.
Lu Xing called out, "Li!" A soldier ran over. "Take them to the emergency station." The soldier named Li nodded and came over to us. "Let's go!"
I waved while carrying Da Bao on my back, and several others followed Li.
Just then, Da Bao's walkie-talkie suddenly crackled to life! "Dog Mom calling, Dog Mom calling! All dogs please respond and report your current status!"
In the quiet morning, the voice from the walkie-talkie was exceptionally clear; it could probably be heard from several meters away. We all froze in place!
What the hell! Of all times to make contact! My heart raced wildly; this was bad news.
With my back turned to Lu Xing, I could feel his gaze fixed on us. I had no doubt that if we didn't respond or acted suspiciously in any way, he would be the first to "fire" and eliminate us!
"Earth Dog reporting: encountered a river, shallow water; the convoy can cross."
"Wolf Dog reporting: has crossed the river; all is normal."
“Company Commander, what should we do?” Daba asked in my ear.
Although I stood frozen in place, my mind raced. I took a few steps forward, pretending to set Daba down on a nearby rock, but in reality, I was trying to avoid Li. “Just act natural. One of the Dalmation team members got injured and is returning for treatment!” With such vague information, Lu Xing wouldn’t find any flaws.
“Dog Mom, Dog Mom, we have a situation. Someone from the Dalmation team is injured and is heading back for treatment.” There was no other choice; once Dog Mom found out, she would definitely send someone to fill the position. I couldn’t deceive her next time, but for now, I had to get through this moment! I couldn’t afford to be careless; Lu Xing seemed difficult to deal with.
“Received! Hyena team, send someone to fill the position! Dalmation team is returning to Passage!”
“Received! Understood!”
Daba naturally completed the conversation. While I pretended to help him, I stole a glance at Lu Xing. He seemed deep in thought as he watched us, but there was nothing unusual.
I secretly sighed in relief and turned around to prepare to carry Daba on my back. There was no choice; the show had to go on.
Just as Daba leaned against my back, Lu Xing called out, “Hey, brother, wait a moment!” He waved his hand, and two soldiers walked over with him.
My heart sank again. Damn it! How long is this guy going to drag this out?! What else could he want? I felt a surge of frustration.
Lu Xing approached with a smile. “Hey, brother, did you encounter the Blue Army on your way?”
“Nope, it was pretty smooth sailing,” I replied casually, not quite understanding his intent.
“Oh, that’s good. The mountain roads are tough to navigate, right?” Lu Xing chatted casually while I grew anxious; time was of the essence.
“It was alright,” I said absentmindedly.
“Leader, do you have any further instructions? I need to take a look at my brother’s foot,” Lu Xing said, his eyes fixed on Daba while he added, “No rush; we’ll be there soon. Just up ahead.”
I furrowed my brow helplessly and lowered my head. My eyes inadvertently caught sight of Lu Xing’s hands resting on his 95 rifle—his right hand gripping the handle tightly with his index finger on the trigger, muscles tense and alert.
Something was off! A chill ran down my spine; Lu Xing must have noticed something! Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so vigilant! I quickly glanced at the two soldiers beside him; fortunately, they had started off cautious but had relaxed significantly as we talked. Their hands were no longer on their weapons.
I felt a bit relieved and immediately looked at Da Bao. The moment I did, I almost shouted out loud! Da Bao's camouflage uniform suddenly revealed a section of army camouflage. It was over! It must have been exposed when Da Bao was lying on my back just now, and I didn't expect Lu Xing to notice it. No wonder he asked me if we had encountered the Blue Army; if we were fake, we definitely wouldn't have encountered them, and he also blocked all possible excuses for us to lie.
What a Guard Battalion Deputy Battalion Commander!
Taking the initiative! I couldn't let him see through our ruse; I had to take him down first!
I stepped aside, blocking Da Bao from him. "Leader, my brother needs to get medical attention quickly; we need to leave now."
As soon as I finished speaking, I stood at attention and saluted Lu Xing. He looked a bit confused and instinctively raised his right hand. I seized the moment his hand left the 95 Rifle and shouted, "Make your move! Don't fire!"
At the same time, I lunged at Lu Xing, grabbing his right wrist with my left hand while my right hand went straight for his neck. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I could subdue him in one go, but with six of us against four of them, if I could hold him off for a bit, the others could take care of the rest.
After all, I was facing a Guard Battalion Deputy Battalion Commander; he should have some skills, right?!
"Indeed, it's the Blue Army!" Lu Xing exclaimed in shock and anger.
(To be continued; tomorrow will be even more exciting!)
