As soon as the Instructor's voice fell, a series of explosive sounds echoed from outside!
What was happening?
Everyone fell into silence, and at that moment, Xuanhua's voice came through the intercom, "Crackle—Company Commander! Report, Company Commander! The Beachhead position is under enemy artillery fire! Repeat, we have observed artillery coverage on the Beachhead position!"
I was taken aback. The Beta really hit us! "Continue observing!" I said in a low voice.
"Don't panic; it might just be a feint by the Red Army," the Instructor said somewhat anxiously.
At that moment, the radio crackled to life. "Calling forward units, respond! What is the situation at your location?" The Instructor stood up abruptly. "Command! Command! This is the Point Obstacle Layout Combined Unit; we have observed that the Beachhead position is currently under attack!"
"What is the situation? Is there any enemy landing?"
"The current situation is unclear; we are observing!" The Instructor wiped the sweat from his forehead. He hesitated for a moment before asking, "Command, what about Point A?"
"The Red Army's artillery bombardment at Point A has ceased. We have detected landing troops and are engaged in firefights. Command orders you to quickly ascertain the situation! Investigate the intent of the attack!"
"Understood!"
The explosions outside continued relentlessly. The Instructor stood still for a moment, murmuring to himself, "Both locations have launched attacks? Is only one real or are both real?" After a while, as if he had made up his mind, he stood up and said, "Wang Wei, I need to take the radio to investigate the situation at the Beachhead position. You stay here with everyone on standby."
I was startled. "Instructor, the artillery fire hasn't stopped yet! It's dangerous for you to go out like this!"
The Instructor looked at us and paced a few times. "I still feel uneasy; I need to go to Passage and see the situation for myself. Hopefully, it's not a main assault by the Red Army. Don't worry; I'll drive there; it's highly mobile. As long as I don't leave Passage, it will be fine."
No matter how we tried to persuade him, the Instructor insisted on going. He had Communicator pack up the radio and load it onto the Jeep, taking two soldiers with him as they sped along the cliffside toward Passage.
The sound of explosions on the beach continued unabated. Xuanhua muttered into the radio, "Company Commander, the beachhead is just a small area, and it's been plowed through. What is the Red Army trying to do?"
I tilted my head to listen; the gunfire seemed to be diminishing. A jolt ran through me. "Is the Red Army about to land?!"
"Xuanhua, what's the situation now?"
"It seems to have thinned out a bit. Hey, there are a lot of lights on the sea, flashing and all. It's a large area!"
At that moment, Beta exclaimed and slammed his fist down. "It must be the Red Army's amphibious tanks! I heard that the N Military District has equipped a large number of advanced amphibious tanks. These tanks often serve as the vanguard for landing assaults, capable of firing 105mm guided missiles from five kilometers offshore while swimming towards the shore. They have long-range precision strike capabilities and can bombard defending forces' tanks, artillery positions, and strongpoints from the sea while under cover from Navy ship guns, breaking through the enemy's coastal defenses. These tanks might also be equipped with stabilized fire control systems, satellite navigation systems, and simplified thermal imaging devices. This is bad! Behind those landing tanks are landing craft! The Red Army is really coming!"
He turned to me and said, "We must notify the command center immediately. Call for artillery cover and helicopter attack units! We need to get armored units here quickly to push the enemy back into the sea! There might still be time!"
I threw my hands up in frustration. "The radio was just taken by Instructor; you know that!"
"Chase after them! Hurry up!" Beta insisted.
"Alright! You all stay put!" Time was not on my side. I called for Sheng Xiong and climbed out of the trench, grabbing a driver from a Vehicle Company. We jumped into a camouflaged truck and floored it toward the Passage.
The truck bounced violently as it made its way along the foot of the cliff toward the Passage, where there was originally no road. At that moment, I couldn't care less; I urged the driver to go faster. If I could just catch up with Instructor and get the radio, everything would still be under control.
If it truly was an attack by the Red Army, Instructor would be in grave danger. Just thinking about what would happen if they captured him and seized the radio sent chills down my spine.
After barely ten minutes on the road, it felt like a year had passed. The radio crackled again with Xuanhua's voice: "Report, Company Commander! It's the Red Army! A large number of Red Army tanks have been spotted on the sea! There are also speedboats—looks like mine sweepers—clearing away remaining obstacles! One tank has already reached the shore and is moving back and forth at the beachhead; most of the beachhead obstacles have been cleared! Company Commander, it seems like the Red Army will land soon!"
Another piece of bad news! I pressed down on the radio. "Quickly check if any vehicles are coming out from this side of the Passage!"
"Not yet!"
I let out a huge sigh of relief. "Wait! Wait! Company Commander, a vehicle just left! Let me check! Company Commander, it's a Jeep! Oh no, isn't that Instructor's car?"
My heart sank again! "Keep an eye on it! Keep an eye on it! Report the situation to me!"
The truck had already turned into the Passage, and I was so nervous I could almost jump out of my skin!
"Yes! The Instructor's car has rushed out; it seems they realized something was wrong and are turning back!" This was even more nerve-wracking than listening to a suspenseful story!
"Oh no! The Jeep is stuck in a sand pit! It looks like one wheel is caught in an anti-tank ditch! Oh no! The Red Army tank seems to have spotted the Jeep!"
"The Red Army tank is coming over! There are people shouting from above!! Company Commander! The Instructor and the others have all gotten out of the car! They must be preparing to abandon it!"
At that moment, I heard faint gunfire!
"Company Commander! The machine gun on the tank has fired! The Instructor and the others have stopped! It seems someone is shouting at them!"
My heart dropped to the floor!
"Company Commander! A few of the Instructors have torn off their armbands! The Instructor took a Radio Wire out of the car; I don't know what that means!"
"Stop the vehicle!" I shouted. The driver slammed on the brakes almost simultaneously! The vehicle came to a sudden halt at the cliff, and inertia nearly sent me crashing into the windshield.
This is really bad! The Instructor must have been declared dead. According to Drill rules, tearing off the armband signifies death, and since the Instructor took out the Radio Wire, it should mean they are informing the Red Army that they won't be able to access the radio. They would have ample time to destroy it before being declared dead.
What should I do?! We've lost communication with the radio station, and the command center is still unaware of the situation here. We can't recklessly call for artillery support or helicopter strikes just yet. If we miss the best timing, once the Red Army lands and passes through the Passage, they will charge straight in! This Military Exercise will end in a complete defeat for our military district!
What should I do! I asked myself again, panic and anxiety preventing me from calming down. I didn't even realize when my sweat had drenched my entire body.
"Company Commander, what should we do?" Sheng Xiong's voice pulled me back to reality. No! Instead of panicking, we should take it step by step. I glanced at the driver, "How far have we gone?"
"About ten kilometers or so!"
"Listen to my orders, block the road with the vehicle! We’ll abandon the car and run back to cover!" I thought for a moment before giving the command.
"What do you mean?" The driver looked at me in confusion.
"Hurry! Don't ask so many questions! Oh, and later destroy the vehicle so it can't be driven away. Do you understand?"
The driver was an Old Sergeant; although he didn’t fully grasp the situation, he faithfully followed orders and began to turn around. I shouted into the intercom, "Xuanhua, withdraw to cover from above, stay hidden! Don’t get spotted!"
"Yes! Company Commander!"
" Sheng Xiong, get out! Prepare to run back!"
"Yes!" Without a second thought, Sheng Xiong opened the door and jumped out.
You might have guessed my intention—yes! I plan to block the vehicle in the Passage to slow down the Red Army's advance. Since this is a Drill, the Red Army definitely won't destroy or damage the vehicle. Therefore, if we can position the Dongfeng Truck properly to create enough space for tanks to pass through, it will take more time. This way, we can give the command center a bit more time to assess the battlefield situation. Perhaps with that little extra time, they can determine the enemy's main attack direction?
Well then! All I can do is delay as much as possible! I opened the truck door and jumped out. The truck had just arrived not long ago; if we run now, it would be like running Five Kilometers. We should be able to make it out of the Passage before the Red Army arrives. Once out of the Passage, we can head right along the cliff and safely reach our hiding spot.
Yes! That's it! There is still a Beta unit outside, and there might be a chance for us. With that thought, I felt a bit calmer; it wasn't the worst time yet, and I couldn't give up! I told myself.
Once the driver parked the vehicle and disabled the relevant power systems, we took off running back. As we ran, I shouted to them, "This is no game! The Red Army is right behind us. Don't be fooled by the traffic jam; they can still come after us on foot. If you don't want to be captured, run for your lives! We need to get out before the Red Army finds us!"
So, the three of us sprinted away. Before long, I found myself lagging behind. I was gasping for breath as I finally made it out of the Passage. After catching my breath for a moment, we continued running along the cliff back to our hiding spot.
When we returned to the concealed trench, I noticed that Xuanhua was already back. The Beta unit was surrounding Xuanhua, firing questions at him. Almost all the officers were gathered there—our unit, the Engineer Company, and the Technical Company—everyone's faces were filled with confusion, anxiety, fear, and helplessness...
Seeing me return, everyone rushed over, bombarding me with questions. "Company Commander, did the Red Army arrive?"
"Company Commander, where's the Instructor?" "What do we do next, Company Commander Wang?!" "Yeah, who do we follow?!"
I leaned on my knees, panting for a while without speaking. After taking a deep breath, I stood up and looked at everyone before slowly saying, "The main force of the Red Army has landed! The Instructor has fallen! We are the only resistance force at this Beachhead position; we have become isolated!"
Gasps filled the air around me as astonished murmurs spread through the crowd.
