What kind of weapon is this?! It can pierce through a metal lid and stab me! I was shocked, but there was no time to think. Taking advantage of the moment before he could withdraw his blade, I thrust my stick forward with all my strength!
Ah! A low growl came from him; he was hit too!
We both instinctively stepped back. At that moment, I felt a warmth spreading beneath my left shoulder—damn it! I was bleeding, and it felt serious. It seemed like a lot of blood was flowing down along my ribs.
However, he wasn't in much better shape. I sensed that I had struck him in the face, and logically speaking, his condition couldn't be better than mine.
We stood there, panting, observing each other's situation in this quiet alley that felt worlds apart from the bar. I could even hear his heavy breaths.
Watching him wipe his face and approach with his weapon raised, I couldn't help but take a step back. He was truly fierce. My left hand was already immobilized, and the blood from my shoulder made me even more alarmed; I had no idea how severe the wound was. With my right hand gripping the stick, I couldn't even bother to cover the injury in this life-and-death moment.
Just as he was about to charge at me again, suddenly, the back door of the bar swung open. In the dim light, I recognized the figures of Old Bi and Ah Huang; they had finally found us!
"Fourth Uncle! Come help!" I shouted urgently. The reason for my shout was also to intimidate him, making it unclear how many people we had on our side.
The two of them hesitated for a moment before sprinting toward us!
Upon hearing my shout, Five Master glanced at me warily while turning slightly to assess the situation. He quickly realized that retreating was impossible; it was one against two. If those two were as capable as I was, there would be no way out for him. The only option left was to advance and run past me to the other end of the alley.
I gripped the wooden stick with one hand and positioned it across the alley, hoping to buy myself ten more seconds until they arrived.
Five Master wasted no time; he charged at me without hesitation. As he approached, he lunged forward with a simple thrust aimed at my left chest.
I knew there was no time to dodge. Even if I managed to evade it, I'd still be on the defensive and might not last until they arrived. So instead, I decided to gamble; I thrust my stick forward fiercely toward his head. The situation had changed—now he wanted a quick resolution and didn't want to be caught. If he didn't avoid it and managed to stab me, he'd still suffer from the iron nails on my stick; even if he didn't die, he'd end up captured.
I hit the jackpot; he hesitated for just a moment and suddenly tilted his head to the right. My stick grazed past his ear while his right hand also veered off course due to his movement, losing its aim. Seizing that moment, I shifted my body to the left just as his blade barely skimmed past my chest.
Unexpectedly, using his forward momentum, he lowered his head and pushed off with his right hand against the ground, flipping sideways past me in an instant. The alley was narrow; I couldn't adjust my grip on the stick in time and could only watch helplessly as he dashed away into the darkness.
Leaning against the wall, watching his retreating figure, I knew there was no way to catch up now. I dropped my stick and pressed my right hand against my left shoulder; at this point, there was no longer any pain in that shoulder, but warm blood continued to flow steadily. Old Bi and Huang arrived just then.
Old Bi exclaimed in surprise, "Old Wang! You can get into a fight even when you just need to pee? Hey, he ran pretty fast! Old Wang, you can't catch up now; if he turns that corner over there, it's a crossroads—I won't waste my energy chasing after him."
Huang remained silent but glanced back at the large man lying on the ground and the girl beside him. Frowning at my disheveled appearance, he asked, "What happened?"
"Big trouble!" As I walked toward Xu Zengjing's direction, I explained hurriedly, "Someone tried to kidnap that girl; luckily, I stumbled upon it. Judging by their technique, this isn't their first time doing this. Ah Huang, you need to call for backup; I've knocked this guy out—we need to interrogate him properly since one got away." As I passed by Horse-Faced Man's side, I kicked him lightly with my foot.
As I walked over to the girl, I struggled to crouch down and gently pushed her hair aside with my right hand for a closer look. Yes, it really was Xu Zengjing. "Ah Huang, this woman has been drugged. You need to handle this too. Hey, you never know, this might be a big case, and you'll get to ride my coattails again."
I received a quick response from Ah Huang, who had already pulled out his phone to make a call. I stood up and continued walking toward the end of the alley when Old Bi called out in surprise from behind, "Where are you going now, Old Wang?"
"To the hospital!" I replied quietly, feeling a bit dizzy. What the hell? Could it be from blood loss?!
At that moment, Old Bi caught up with me. "I'm going with you!" I stepped out of the alley and waved down a taxi. When I turned around, what the hell! Old Bi was carrying Xu Zengjing along.
"What are you bringing her for?!"
"She needs to go to the hospital too. Ah Huang doesn't know how to wake her up!" Old Bi shot me a glance.
"You like playing the hero so much; why didn't you come out sooner?" I teased him and took my seat in the front passenger side.
The driver looked at me in shock, seeing all the blood on me. I reassured him, "It's fine, just an accidental injury. To the Military Hospital." After that, I took off my shirt and wrapped it around my left shoulder. For some reason, I was getting thirstier by the minute.
When I arrived at the Emergency Room, the doctor examined me and revealed that my left shoulder had been pierced by a diamond-shaped blade. The tissue around the wound was severely damaged; pressure couldn't stop the bleeding—only surgery could. Fortunately, it wasn't too deep; otherwise, it would have been serious.
While they were performing surgery to stop the bleeding on one side, they were also giving me a blood transfusion on the other. After administering local anesthesia, I looked down at my shoulder wound in horror. The wound was a square hole with sides that were quite far apart; there was no way to achieve any significant hemostasis or healing through mutual compression. As a soldier and a former military enthusiast, I knew exactly what had caused this type of injury.
It was the 56-style triangular bayonet used by our forces! This bayonet is eight inches long and made of alloy steel; it is directly mounted on a rifle and can be folded but is generally not removed for use. It doesn't have a flat blade but only triangular edges that can stab but not slash; thus, it's widely referred to as a "stabber" rather than a "knife." The Big Head knife also has a blood groove but is less effective compared to the triangular bayonet because its power lies more in its three-edged structure. Its design focuses on stabbing and bleeding rather than slashing or slicing. Once it penetrates the body, it quickly draws air into the wound through its blood groove. The air forms bubbles inside, blocking blood vessels; stabbing any part of the body can lead to immediate death within moments. Moreover, once negative pressure is eliminated from within the cavity, pulling out the stabber is effortless—truly an exceptionally practical weapon for killing.
This type of bayonet was widely used during the Sino-Vietnamese Self-Defense Counterattack War and later found its way into civilian hands. There was even a character using it in Jet Li's film "Zhongnanhai Bodyguard." Who would have thought I'd encounter one today? Thankfully, aside from severe damage near the wound site, everything else seemed normal. This also indirectly disproved a common belief about the 56 bayonet: that during its smelting process, arsenic was added due to metal properties; after wear on its surface phosphorus coating in battle exposed arsenic-containing steel underneath, even minor scratches could be difficult to heal.
After surgery was completed, the doctor wanted me to stay under observation for a while longer. I thought this was truly unfortunate; I'd have to trouble Old Tang again and call my unit to explain my hospitalization.
Meanwhile, after Old Bi dropped off Xu Zengjing, he went for intravenous treatment in internal medicine. When he returned, he said there wasn't much of an issue—just observation for now. While chatting with Old Bi, Ah Huang called me up: "Brother Three, how are you doing?"
"I'm still alive but need to stay here for a few days."
"That's good to hear! By the way, Brother Three! We've really encountered a big case this time!"
"Oh?!"
"The guy we caught has woken up; they call him Ma Ge on the streets and has a criminal record. He was involved in an extortion case before; since it wasn't a large amount and the victim had money, they took the money and released him. Although he reported it later, there were no leads and it gradually got shelved. Unexpectedly, Ma Ge confessed but mentioned accomplices led by someone called Five Master; they're still working on sketches! However, Ma Ge doesn't know much about them—only that he's from out of town and hasn't been here long."
"Oh, congratulations, Fourth Uncle, you've solved another case."
"Hehe, Brother Three, it's all thanks to you. Brother Three, when I go to take the girl's statement tomorrow, you should come along. By the way, you'll need to give a statement too!" Ah Huang sounded quite pleased on the other end, which I could understand; his Deputy Captain position was still acting.
"Alright, alright. I'm just worried about how to explain this to the higher-ups while I'm in the hospital. Saving the day? Saving the day in a bar alley at midnight?"
"Uh, that is indeed a problem."
"Sigh!" After hanging up the phone, I let out a breath. It seemed I had to come up with a reason for being sick and stay in for a few days, but I couldn't delay too long; who knew if there would be any missions from the troops below.
I called Old Tang next and fabricated a story about injuring my shoulder and being in the emergency room. I might need to take a few days off and asked him to keep an eye on the Unit for me.
The next call was to the Company Commander. Fortunately, the Company Commander was someone who didn't make a fuss about things. When I told him I only needed three days of sick leave, he readily agreed and even offered to help me file the paperwork with the regiment.
Letting out a sigh of relief, I thought for a moment before finally calling Old Zhou. This truly felt like a close call; thinking back on it, life and death had hung in the balance just moments ago. When Old Zhou answered, I explained everything that had happened. He calmly replied, "Disasters arise as fate dictates. A disaster is fate, and fate is a disaster. Once you pass through it, fortune will come. Alright, I'm busy now; take care of yourself."
