Just back at the Unit, Old Tang and I were still downstairs when we heard the entire building in chaos, with people from all the Barracks running around like it was a zoo! It was already noon, and they were still not resting?! They were acting like they had been injected with adrenaline!
What the hell! I hadn't even hung up yet, and the troops were already in such disarray! I was furious! I pulled out my whistle and blew it hard a few times, shouting, "Are you all not taking a nap? Get down here for assembly! Assemble!"
The whole building fell silent for a few seconds. "The Company Commander is back!" someone shouted from the third floor. "Quick, quick! Assemble! Assemble!" People started pouring out of the building.
Of course, I had set the rules: once the whistle blew, everyone had one minute to form up. When formation began, anyone who wanted to join afterward had to report in and do 100 push-ups before rejoining (of course, urgent tasks could be noted first).
I looked at my watch; Li Squad Leader was forming up. Exactly one minute later, everyone was present! After reporting to me, Li returned to his spot in line.
I smiled at Old Tang. "Shall I go first?" Old Tang gestured for me to proceed, and I stepped up a few paces to stand on the steps. Everyone was staring at me intently. As I lowered my head, I realized I hadn't even worked up a sweat yet. Seeing their nervous expressions made me want to chuckle.
"Comrades!" I cleared my throat. "You all performed excellently this morning; your achievements are evident to everyone! The Military District Commander and neighboring units have taken note of us, and that's how it should be! This is the spirit and momentum we need to display! Perhaps you don't realize it, but you have defeated what is known as the Waterborne Tigers of the Heavy Engineering Corps!" At that moment, I noticed the officers and soldiers below looking visibly shocked and starting to whisper among themselves.
"Haha, surprised, aren't you? In fact, you have truly achieved a breakthrough! It all comes down to team spirit and momentum! Before this, I had been contemplating what kind of spirit our Unit should embody."
I paused briefly and scanned the crowd. "Do you know which three animals are the fiercest on the grasslands? Lions, leopards, and hyenas! But only one animal dares to snatch food from any other animal's mouth—that's the hyena! In the eyes of lions, what are hyenas? They are those who gnaw away at lions' territories with a 100-to-1 advantage until they reach their core! They launch attacks that confuse lions beyond comprehension; their intense desire for success and their terrifying persistence in facing setbacks prove that they are fierce and tenacious opponents!"
The more I spoke, the more excited I became; the audience was captivated. "Do you know why hyenas are so formidable? First, they are bloodthirsty and unafraid of challenges. Any opponent that dares to confront them excites them; no matter how strong an adversary may be, they fear nothing. This is our Unit—no matter how many difficulties we face, we must have the spirit of drawing our swords bravely, daring to try, daring to challenge ourselves, daring to fail, and daring to rise again! Second, they never shy away from hardships. No matter how tough the environment is, they will act decisively for a common goal. Thirdly, they attack in groups with diverse tactics. In a book about wolves' strategies, hyenas are described as often splitting into several teams that encircle their target from different angles while continuously driving and charging at it until they identify the weakest or slowest among them for a final strike!"
At this point, I suddenly paused for a moment and looked at everyone slowly. "We are such a group! The hyena is our totem! The spirit of the hyena is our spirit! I am proud to lead warriors like you!" With that, I raised my right hand in a standard military salute.
The crowd fell silent for a moment before someone started clapping thunderously; soon after, rhythmic applause erupted as others began chanting: "Hyena! Hyena! Hyena!" Everyone roared together as their voices merged into a wave that echoed above Camp.
I heard Old Tang murmuring beside me, "Clausewitz once said: When battles become chaotic and all soldiers feel uncertain about the outcome of war, we must rely on our leader's faint light to guide us through adversity! This is the decisiveness and resilience of a wolf pack!"
Old Tang certainly knew quite a bit! Haha! Just then, I saw the Battalion Communicator rushing over breathlessly and standing beside me. I turned my head to signal him if he had something to say.
Standing at attention after catching his breath, he picked up a notebook and reported, "I've received word from headquarters: Company One is on leave starting today for five days! Message delivered!" As soon as he finished speaking, there was another wave of excitement from below. Of course—how long had it been since they'd been allowed outside? Wouldn't these kids be thrilled?
Haha, this was indeed Commander fulfilling his earlier promise; it's good that everyone could take some time off. As I thought this over, I noticed that the Communicator was still lingering in place without leaving.
I asked in surprise, "Is there something else?"
"Report one, Company Commander!" The Communicator instinctively stood at attention, stammering, "The Company Commander sent a message to keep quiet and not make noise, as it will disturb others' rest."
"Hahaha! Alright!" I waved my hand grandly. "Everyone is dismissed! Each squad can write leave requests proportionally to go out! Return by six o'clock!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, the crowd below dispersed in a rush! They were faster than when they assembled! These little rascals! They really know how to play! Without a doubt, soon the Company Headquarters would be filled with people requesting leave, and the computer room upstairs would be packed as well.
I asked Old Tang to handle the leave requests while I grabbed my clothes and dove into the shower room. Finally, I had time to wash up! It was unbearable; my clothes were sticking to me!
I noticed that almost all the veterans were writing leave requests to Old Tang. Don't think this is a privilege for veterans; in my unit, when it comes to half-day leaves, veterans take them. For full-day leaves, veterans usually let the new recruits go first so they can stay out longer and explore more places. It's rare for them to be stationed in a big city; they should see and experience more, right? A warmth spread through me; this is how care and camaraderie are reflected in the details!
After showering, I greeted Old Tang and prepared to return to my room for a nap. Old Tang had no pressing matters either and suggested he go out for a bit while I kept an eye on the unit. He would return during Roll Call in the evening.
Since I also planned to rest for a while, I agreed. I asked Sheng Xiong to sit at Company Headquarters and watch over things while I went back to my room for a quick nap.
Little did I know that when I woke up from this nap, something had gone wrong!
When I woke up and checked my watch, it was already past four o'clock! Oh my God, I jumped up in shock. It suddenly dawned on me that we were on leave! I rubbed my face and sat on the edge of the bed in disbelief.
Suddenly, I heard some murmuring outside. I couldn't make out what they were saying but caught mentions of the Company Commander. Curious, I quietly got up and opened the door to look outside. Right outside my door was the Company Headquarters meeting room. Sheng Xiong was surprisingly absent, but I saw Duty Squad Leader Li, Wu Chao, and several squad leaders discussing something.
Wu Chao stood up. "Let's go out and grab them! We can fight if necessary! The Company Commander would do the same!"
"Right! Let's get them!" "Go!" Several squad leaders also stood up, ready to leave.
Li Squad Leader was still young and couldn't control these veterans; he anxiously stood up and said, "Wait! I'll go call the Company Commander!"
"No need to call!" I pulled open the door and stepped out. Upon seeing me emerge, Wu Chao and the others' expressions changed; they froze in place without speaking. Li Squad Leader rushed over as if he had seen a savior. "Company Commander, something's happened!" he said urgently.
I was startled but kept my expression calm. "What happened? Don't panic; take your time!"
"Xu Changshan has been taken hostage! Sheng Xiong and Jinghe took some new recruits from our unit over there to negotiate for him. Wu Chao and several veteran squad leaders are worried about them getting into trouble and want to go check it out too!"
"What?! Xu Changshan has been captured!" I almost shouted, "Who the hell dares to take my people?!" That's how it is in the army; it doesn't take long for even the most refined individuals to start using coarse language. It's not a matter of being uncivilized; it's just a verbal habit that becomes second nature.
Li Squad Leader glanced at me and simply said, "Allies."
"Impossible!" I denied it without a second thought. Are you kidding me? Why would anyone come here as a guest and then capture my people? Are they out of their minds? I couldn't believe that someone would do something so reckless as to ruin the relationship between two units.
Wu Chao walked over slowly. "Company Commander, it's true!"
I became anxious immediately, grabbing Wu Chao by the collar. "You better explain this clearly! What happened? I just took a nap, and you all can't give me a moment of peace!"
Wu Chao looked aggrieved. "I don’t know either; I just heard about it. It seems Xu Changshan and another new recruit, Murong Qian, went to the Third Battalion to visit some old friends. They got into an argument in front of the Allies' gate, and Xu ended up fighting someone. A bunch of people came out from the other side and captured Xu. Murong ran back here looking for you, but he ran into Sheng Xiong. As soon as Sheng Xiong heard about it, he got furious and wanted to take some new recruits to rescue him. Jinghe was worried about trouble and followed along. Right now, there aren’t many veterans in our unit, and I’m afraid they might get hurt. I wanted to go check on the situation."
Wu Chao was being slick; he didn’t take anyone to help but just wanted to see what was going on. I couldn’t scold him for that, so I let go of him and started pacing in circles. This situation was serious; the other side clearly wanted our Unit Commander to go find them, which would lead to humiliation if we went. If we didn’t go and reported it to the regiment instead, it would be seen as provoking trouble. Not only Xu but even I would face punishment.
After two laps around, I stopped and said, "Wu Chao, come with me. Li will stay behind to keep watch; no one is allowed to act recklessly!"
