I glanced at the room filled with warriors and continued, "Earlier, we introduced six techniques. Now, let's focus on the 74 Modification. The so-called 74 Modification refers to the GZQ1 Heavy Floating Bridge, which is an advanced design of our own following the GZQ0 Heavy Floating Bridge (the 74-style belt bridge) and the GZQ0 Heavy Floating Bridge (the 79-style belt bridge). The overall technical level of the GZQ1 Heavy Floating Bridge is comparable to similar equipment from developed countries such as the United States, Russia, Germany, and France. It is a backbone equipment of our Army Bridge Troops and is also exported abroad. You new recruits are fortunate; this is the main combat equipment you will face in the future. Come on, let’s hear from an Old Comrade about his experiences with these two types of equipment. Yes, you there, Wu Chao! I see you’ve been chatting with Fatty quite a bit; share your insights with everyone."
Amidst the laughter from the audience, Wu Chao stood up with a flushed face and said, "Yes!"
"Relax; just share your personal experience."
"Uh, I feel that training six is summed up in one word: exhausting!" Wu Chao scratched his head.
"Nonsense! That's just because you're out of shape!" Xuanhua in the front row muttered, prompting another round of laughter.
"Let him speak!" I tapped on the table.
Encouraged by my words, Wu Chao boldly continued, "Really, I’m a Veteran now, but I truly feel that training six is too tiring. After setting up a bridge, I had to run back and forth over ten times, carrying things that weighed over a hundred pounds and holding onto dozens of pounds while running. It was exhausting and hot, and it didn’t guarantee success since so many people were training together; coordination and teamwork were issues. So at that time, the Squad Leader who directed and coordinated was crucial!" At this point, Wu Chao shot me a sidelong glance and threw me a bit of Flattery.
"Ohhh!" The other Veterans cheered in response.
"What’s all this about?!" Wu Chao seemed a bit flustered. "Where did I go wrong?! Aren’t you old-timers just like me? Running back and forth like trucks, wanting to collapse right after training! I think the 74 Modification is really good; it greatly reduces manpower requirements. If handled well, what used to take a bunch of people can be done by just a few."
A moment of silence followed as the Veterans pondered Wu Chao's words. The new recruits imagined what it would be like to carry a hundred-pound Bridge Board back and forth like a truck. I noticed Fatty Jinghe's face had turned pale, while others like Sheng Xiong seemed indifferent as he doodled on paper.
"Very well, Wu Chao, you can sit down." I said calmly. It seemed my point had been made.
"I believe everyone can relate to Wu Chao's experience. It’s precisely because of the time-consuming and labor-intensive nature of these tasks that we have completely phased out old equipment and introduced new gear—the 74 Modification. Next, let’s take a look at the main technical performance features of the 74 Modification that you will be working with long-term."
Seeing the eager expressions on both new and old faces below me made me smile inwardly. I needed to spark these kids' interest in learning; only then would they dive into exploring how to use this equipment seriously. Otherwise, they would be like soulless beings mechanically following procedures without any combat effectiveness!
I cleared my throat. "Well, our Type 74 modification can set up a Floating Bridge and construct a Bailey Bridge. It can support a tracked load of 60 tons and a wheeled axle pressure of 1 ton for heavy weaponry, overcoming river obstacles with a flow rate of less than 5 meters per second. The complete set of equipment consists of Full-Shape Boats in the river, Full-Shape Boats on the shore, a Speedboat for towing, and transport vehicles for the boats. As for the boat transport vehicles, heh, there's no need to elaborate on that; they are assigned to our Vehicle One."
Despite everyone listening intently, this was a lesson plan I had spent considerable time preparing. After returning from Ah Huang's place on Sunday night, I dedicated all my thoughts to training. No kidding! I couldn't bear to be ranked last in Water Training again. To improve training levels, we must have scientific training methods. To have scientific methods, everyone must fully understand the equipment at hand and unleash their subjective initiative!
So I meticulously prepared a lesson plan about the Type 74 modification, which included researching online and obtaining manuals from equipment personnel. It took up quite a bit of my time.
The hardest part was finding time. After much thought, I decided that Wednesday afternoon during Political Education would be the most suitable. Thankfully, Old Tang managed to free up an hour for me.
I knew these kids well; if I lectured during their evening break, most would likely doze off, resulting in minimal effectiveness! However, if I told them stories while they were half-asleep during that time, they would definitely perk up, and the effectiveness would be around ninety percent!
"Now, you can imagine that as the width of the river varies, so does the quantity of equipment we use. Therefore, flexibility is one of the major advantages of this Type 74!"
"For instance, when setting up a Floating Bridge, the Type 74 can construct a 104-meter-long Floating Bridge with a capacity of 60 tons. The roadway width is 66 meters; it can accommodate double lanes under loads below zero tons and is suitable for flow rates of 5 meters per second. The operation time is four minutes, allowing for 60 vehicles to pass per hour. If we set up a 5-ton Floating Bridge, it can reach a length of 148 meters with a roadway width of one meter; it is suitable for flow rates of zero meters per second with an operation time of zero minutes and can allow for zero vehicles to pass per hour."
"Report!" Fatty Jinghe raised his hand and stood up.
"Yes?"
"I have a question!"
"Great! Ask away!" It seemed these guys were really engaged in my lecture.
"Company Commander, the width of the equipment is fixed; it may not perfectly match the situation where eight units reach the opposite bank. What if some are shorter or longer? What should we do?"
"Hey, that's a good question!" I turned around and drew two horizontal lines on the blackboard. "This represents a river!"
Then I drew a vertical line. "This represents the Floating Bridge! You all know about laser rangefinders, right? In this situation, if we measure the distance and it’s about the width of eight units, then we’ll use eight."
I erased the vertical line and drew a diagonal line. "Now, if the distance is a bit more or farther away, why should we go in a straight line? We can slightly adjust it, for example, using nine! Got it?"
There was a buzz of discussion among the audience. I saw the chubby guy looking thoughtfully at the blackboard and gestured for him to sit down.
"Now, let's move on to the second advantage." I looked at the audience with satisfaction; they were engaged and asking questions!
"The gz01 heavy ferry bridge, although also known as the '74 heavy ferry bridge improved version,' is not just a simple upgrade of the original 74-type heavy ferry bridge. It represents a comprehensive technical update and enhancement from the Ferry Bridge Equipment itself to the vehicles it carries. The design of the ferry structure incorporates advanced design concepts from the gz00 heavy ferry bridge, and since it uses medium off-road vehicles, it complements the gz00 heavy ferry bridge (which uses heavy vehicles) in performance, allowing for mixed and interchangeable use. The compatibility between these two types of equipment is very high, which benefits production, training, usage, and maintenance management. The greatest advantage of the gzq1 heavy ferry bridge achieving 'light vehicle capability' is that it improves adaptability to road conditions, making it more suitable for areas with poor transportation conditions such as southern rice paddies, hilly regions, and remote mountainous areas. When using the 74-type Bailey Bridge for ferrying, it comes with its own ramp, eliminating the need to construct a dock; vehicles can directly drive onto the Bailey Bridge from the shore. See how convenient that is? Cars can just drive right up!"
Laughter erupted from the audience; there was no way around it—humor was essential with this crowd. "Next, let's talk about the third advantage..."
What was supposed to be a one-hour lecture turned into an hour and a half due to constant interruptions with questions. Even the duty Squad Leader forgot to blow the whistle for lunch until Old Tang ran up to check on me, letting me know it was time to eat.
After announcing that we could break for lunch, I walked down with Old Tang at the back. He chuckled at me as we descended. "Well done! You're quite bold!"
I laughed heartily. "Of course! I can't lose face; I have to maintain our company’s reputation! Plus, I have to consider your image too—don’t want you out there partnering with someone who has no skills! Haha!"
Old Tang smiled slightly. "How could that be? If I didn’t believe in you, I wouldn’t have come to this company."
I stopped in my tracks and patted his shoulder earnestly. "Brother, thanks! We must show everyone that local university students can excel in the military too!"
Old Tang smiled and said, "Alright, I know you're good at everything. Honestly, I think you shouldn't have gone into medicine. You would be just as impressive as a Political Officer. I mean, your lectures are great! You've managed to keep this group engaged for over an hour, much more than when I teach my education classes!"
I chuckled softly, "Well, you know, I would actually be best suited as a teacher! Attending Medical University was something my family chose for me. Back then, I didn't really understand anything. Fortunately, life is something we can adjust ourselves. Just like you, Old Tang. I remember your major was Aquaculture, right? Haha, how did you end up in the military?"
Old Tang gave an awkward smile and replied, "Well, haha, back in the day the military was recruiting from schools. I thought I'd just submit my resume and see what happened, thinking I'd end up at some base or something. I didn't expect to spend a year in military school and come out as a Squad Leader!"
I sighed and said, "Old Tang, since we're here, let's make the best of it. Don't think too much about it. We still have a long road ahead; who knows if we'll face any changes again?"
Old Tang smiled back but didn't say anything further. We both headed downstairs toward the Cafeteria.
After dinner, it was time for labor. It was amusing to see that on one side of the main road was the Camp and on the other side were fields. Each Unit had a small vegetable garden to grow some food to improve their lives. The heat in early April was already quite intense, and wearing winter uniforms felt stifling; many soldiers were sweating after just a short while of work.
I stood at the edge of the field helping to loosen the soil. To be honest, it was under the guidance of the Company Commander that I learned what to plant this season and next, how to loosen the soil, fertilize it, and water it properly. This is what growth is about—only in the military could a city kid like me learn so many things that aren't taught in normal life.
Everyone was laughing and joking around when suddenly a Jeep screeched to a stop beside us on the road. I looked up and exclaimed, "Hey, it's Vehicle 001!"
