A group of people silently followed Wang Dacheng, spreading out to conceal themselves as they descended the mountain. The 18 submachine guns they carried had a limited range of only 150 meters. Therefore, they needed to approach the slope stealthily; otherwise, if discovered by the Japanese Army, they would become sitting ducks.
Wang Dacheng cautiously led everyone out of the forest. Once they left the cover of the trees, he felt a surge of anxiety. Fortunately, the slope blocked most of the Japanese Army's line of sight, and with the Japanese forces engaged in attacking Shagang, the sounds of gunfire were incessant. Lying on the ground, Wang Dacheng and his companions did not attract any attention from the Japanese soldiers.
The short distance of just a few hundred meters felt like an eternity to Wang Dacheng. By the time they reached the slope, he was drenched in sweat. He straightened up and looked back at his brothers; thankfully, everyone had kept up. Leaning against the incline, he addressed them, "Brothers, we have completed the most critical step. The next part will be much easier. Wu Yong, your team will set up artillery on this slope while I take my group up to observe! Everyone, get ready for battle!"
The group nodded in agreement and began to climb up the slope in a fan-like formation. At that moment, Wang Dacheng meaningfully patted Wu Yong on the shoulder. "Brother, whether we succeed or not depends on you this time!" Without waiting for Wu Yong's response, he adjusted his steel helmet and climbed toward the top of the slope with his weapon.
The slope was not very high, only about ten meters. Wang Dacheng quickly reached the summit, which was relatively flat. He lay down and scanned both sides; all his brothers had spread out along the ridge and were preparing their weapons and ammunition for battle.
Zhang Gosheng and Yang Zhu lay beside Wang Dacheng, one on each side. Feeling slightly reassured, he raised his binoculars to observe the movements of the Japanese Army's command center.
The group of Japanese commanders was still in place! It seemed they were still having a meeting or something similar, surrounded by a Colonel—likely their Regimental Commander!
Wang Dacheng then turned his binoculars toward Shagang. There was a thick cloud of smoke obscuring his view; however, he could see waves of attacking Japanese soldiers surging toward the defensive positions like fields of golden wheat. From the intensity of gunfire, Wang Dacheng keenly sensed that the defenders were about to give way!
They had to act quickly; this was the best support for the defenders!
Wang Dacheng tightened his grip on the binoculars and adjusted them toward the Japanese command post. At this distance—just over a kilometer—there was little he could do. What should he do?!
Just then, he noticed through his binoculars that a Japanese commander was looking in their direction and pointing at them. Had they been discovered? Wang Dacheng instinctively shrank back.
No one expected that in the next moment, there would be a parting in the crowd as this Japanese Colonel led his men toward their direction!
Wang Dacheng's heart raced; this was an opportunity! Suddenly, Wu Yong's voice whispered from behind him, "Wang Squad Leader, we've set up the artillery. Where is our target?"
Wang Dacheng suppressed his excitement and replied softly, "Take a look; it's right ahead!"
Wu Yong squeezed forward and took the binoculars. After a glance, he exclaimed in surprise, "So many Japanese officers! Wow, there are quite a few captains! Hey! There's a Colonel coming this way! Ah! I see it now; we're at a higher elevation—they're coming here to check on Shagang's situation!"
Wang Dacheng discontentedly slapped Wu Yong on the shoulder and snatched back the binoculars while raising them again to look through them. "If I let you shoot straight ahead, do you think you can hit that Japanese officer?"
Wu Yong pondered for a moment before responding, "If I can get him within about 100 meters, there's a good chance I'll hit him. That way, whether he advances or retreats, he'll be under fire. However, we also have to take significant risks; a regimental commander is likely protected by at least one squad of soldiers. I'm worried that if we come under attack, those Japanese soldiers will charge at us without hesitation."
Wang Dacheng remained calm. "Don't worry about that; I'll help you gauge the distance while you take your shot!"
Wu Yong nodded and turned to slip away.
Wang Dacheng held the submachine gun in his hand and shouted to those around him, "Pass it down! No one fires without my command. Let the Japanese Devil come in and fight!"
Through the binoculars, Wang Dacheng clearly saw that this Colonel had brought only a small team, about forty to fifty men in front, with another group scattered on both sides, approaching without heavy gear, not even carrying grenade launchers!
Wang Dacheng couldn't help but feel overjoyed; the Japanese were being too careless! They probably never expected there were still enemies here!
As the Japanese Army drew closer—800 meters, 600 meters, 400 meters—Wang Dacheng's heart raced faster and faster, almost bursting out of his chest. He suppressed his excitement and called out to Wu Yong and the others on the slope, "About 400 meters ahead, straight distance!"
Wu Yong responded, and Wang Dacheng turned back to the binoculars. The Japanese Army became clearer; he could even see the Colonel's face distinctly. It was this very face that had cruelly slaughtered over a dozen unarmed prisoners of war with a War Blade the night before!
The Colonel walked proudly while chatting with a nearby Lieutenant. The other soldiers of the Japanese Army spread out to guard around them, with a Sergeant carrying a Type 38 Rifle adorned with the Japanese Army flag walking right in front of the Colonel, just a few meters away.
"Zero meters!" Wang Dacheng called softly as he saw Wu Yong pull the firing lever. The soldier named Liu Tie loaded a grenade into the launch tube, completing the ammunition setup. Wu Yong then adjusted the handle until it reached zero meters.
Wang Dacheng turned back to continue observing; everything was normal. The Japanese Army had not noticed the hidden enemies on the hill and continued marching straight up! The wait felt like an eternity, but finally, they were nearly at zero meters! Wang Dacheng excitedly shouted, "Zero meters!"
Wu Yong gripped the launcher with his left hand and pulled the trigger belt with his right hand. "Thud!" A light sound echoed as the grenade shot out!
Everyone on the slope silently watched as the Japanese Army approached from below. Wang Dacheng held tightly onto his binoculars. After what felt like a long few seconds, there was a loud "bang!" as the grenade exploded among the Japanese soldiers!
"Got it!" Zhang Gosheng couldn't help but shout out loud. But Wang Dacheng could clearly see through the binoculars that the grenade hit behind that Sergeant, knocking several soldiers in front down.
Suddenly struck, all of the Japanese Army dropped to the ground. The Colonel crouched down for cover beside his Lieutenant. Wang Dacheng shouted back, "Not enough! Ten more meters would be perfect!"
When Wang Dacheng turned back around, he saw that the Japanese Army was quickly gathering around their commander to retreat. At that moment, Wu Yong launched another grenade; this time it overshot and landed among the retreating soldiers, taking down several more—including a low-ranking officer who looked like a captain.
Indeed, the Type 89 grenade launcher had high accuracy within 400 meters and a kill radius of ten meters; now that the Japanese Invaders wanted to retreat, they would have to endure more fire!
After initial chaos, seasoned Taxi soldiers realized that their enemy was right on top of them on the slope. With no better options left, they could only charge forward to encircle this enemy force! The Colonel drew his command sword and shouted orders for his troops to charge up the hill! Meanwhile, from afar, more Japanese soldiers responded to his call and surged forward like a tide!
The Japanese Army fired while charging but hadn't yet entered everyone's firing range! Wang Dacheng raised himself up and shouted, "The Japanese kids are charging! Everyone stay concealed; do not fire until I give the order!" Bullets whizzed past his ears as he tightly gripped his submachine gun, estimating the distance to the Japanese Army.
"150 meters!" Wang Dacheng shouted again. Wu Yong fired once more; this time, the whistling grenade still missed hitting that Colonel as he ran forward with his scattered troops and took cover on the right side.
It was possible that they realized there was only one grenade launcher left. The Japanese Army was becoming increasingly arrogant, and many people had already straightened up and were sprinting across the flat ground. "One hundred meters! Fire!" Wang Dacheng shouted fiercely. He pulled the trigger of his submachine gun with all his might, the 18 in his hands dancing as it spewed flames of death, causing the Japanese soldiers in front to fall one after another!
At the same time, the sound of gunfire echoed—"da da da," a chorus of 18s! All the brothers opened fire, their concentrated firepower harvesting the lives of the Japanese Army!
Wang Dacheng's brothers had never used the 18 before and had no idea about conserving ammunition. In just a moment, they had emptied an entire magazine. Many were now firing from a crouched or even standing position, shooting down at the mountain below.
With no obstacles or cover, the Japanese Army found themselves in an awkward situation. In that instant, twenty to thirty men fell. The soldiers behind them shouted loudly and charged up the slope over their fallen comrades! The crazed Japanese Army spread out from their assault formation, causing the concentrated fire of the 18s to be dispersed; often only one or two Japanese soldiers were hit with each burst.
The soldiers at the back quickly used the bodies of their fallen comrades to set up two machine guns, firing "tu tu tu" back up the slope in retaliation! Caught off guard, several standing warriors were hit and toppled down the slope.
There was no time for sorrow. Wang Dacheng angrily inserted a second magazine and desperately suppressed the Japanese Army below, who were now less than fifty meters away from the slope!
"Throw grenades! Conserve ammunition!" Wang Dacheng shouted! He threw a hand grenade with all his strength, watching it explode among the screaming Japanese soldiers. He pulled out his second magazine but suddenly noticed Wu Yong crouching behind him with artillery, measuring distance. Wang Dacheng yelled at him, "Have you lost your mind? What are you doing up here?"
Wu Yong replied urgently, "Blind firing isn't a solution; we need to fire shells! I have to see where I'm shooting; otherwise, I'll fire directly!"
Wang Dacheng didn't have time to respond. He pulled out a magazine, loaded it, and turned to unleash a barrage at the swarming Japanese Army!
