"Telegrapher," who had been silent, was suddenly pulled by Wu Yong. "Squad Leader Wang, calm down!" He turned to the Telegrapher. "What’s the response from above?"
The Telegrapher hesitated before answering, "We cannot bombard right now. The division headquarters has ordered: the troops are about to launch a full-scale offensive against the Japanese Invaders! We are instructed to protect the radio station and retreat to Changde when the opportunity arises!"
"What!? They want us to retreat?" Wang Dacheng became anxious, shoving the binoculars into Wu Yong's hands. "Look for yourself; our brothers over there are being slaughtered by the Japanese Devil! How can we retreat?"
The surrounding soldiers gathered around, looking at Wu and Wang. Wu Yong tossed the binoculars aside and looked at Wang Dacheng slowly. "Squad Leader Wang, you need to calm down! Do you think we can rush over there and save them? This is a Regimental Command Post; can we get through with just our small group? And look at this radio station—if it falls into the hands of the Japanese Devil, what will we do? Can we bear that responsibility?"
Wang Dacheng fell silent for a moment. After a while, he coldly said, "Then you take your people and retreat. Our reconnaissance mission is already complete! I want to stay here; I want to follow this Regimental Command Post and find an opportunity to strike back!"
With that, he glanced around at the others. "Those who wish to stay can stay; those who don’t, I won’t force them. Just follow Squad Leader Wu and retreat!"
"Brother Dacheng, isn’t being a soldier all about fighting the Japanese Devil? I want to stay with you!" Zhang Gosheng was the first to speak up.
The original members of Wang Dacheng's unit echoed in agreement, while Wu Yong's group looked on in confusion, not understanding what was happening.
Wu Yong hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Zhang Fa, Liu Tie, you two stay with me. The rest of you cover the radio station and retreat towards Changde city. Remember, don’t take the main road; it’s okay to go slowly and take detours. The important thing is to ensure nothing happens to the radio station!"
He turned back to Wang Dacheng calmly. "The ones being slaughtered over there are also my brothers. I’ll stay with you; you lead us in fighting together! Honestly, I haven’t taken down a single Japanese Devil yet!"
Wang Dacheng looked at Wu Yong in surprise. He had thought this student officer had never been on the battlefield and lacked any fighting spirit, but he didn’t expect Wu Yong would volunteer to stay. He said solemnly, "Squad Leader Wu is a real man! Everyone, check your gear and ammunition!"
The radio team preparing to withdraw silently kept as much ammunition as they could carry. They knew these brave warriors might never return among them again, and they paid their respects through their actions.
After completing their equipment checks, they stood at attention and saluted Wang Dacheng and the others before turning and disappearing into the vast night.
At this moment, Wang Dacheng picked up the binoculars again and lay on the ground, continuing to observe the situation at the Japanese Army command post. Wu Yong leaned over gently and asked, "What’s your plan?"
Wang Dacheng remained silent as he observed the dozen or so vigorous men lying in pools of blood at the foot of the hill, their bodies severed. The commander of the Japanese Devil was nowhere to be seen.
He slowly lowered his binoculars, clenched his right fist, and slammed it down on the ground in front of him. "Damn those Japanese!" He turned to Wu Yong. "You were trained in artillery reconnaissance. What is the firing range and power of that kind of single-man-operated mortar used by the Japanese Devil? And can you operate it?"
Without hesitation, Wu Yong replied, "That's the Type 89 grenade launcher, with a caliber of 50 millimeters, a total length of 41 centimeters, a barrel length of 60 centimeters, and a weight of 7 kilograms. Its firing range is between 180 to 700 meters, with an effective range of 500 meters. As for its power, the lethal radius of the grenade launcher is about 5 to 8 meters. If a grenade lands in a crowd, it can kill dozens of people. For a 50-millimeter caliber, that's quite impressive. It's simple to operate; two people can carry and use it." Suddenly, Wu Yong's expression changed as he looked at Wang Dacheng in shock. "Wait, are you thinking of using that?!"
"Yes!" Wang Dacheng said decisively. "We need to find one and take it with us. You’ll operate it and see if we can take out a few high-ranking Japanese Devil commanders. Even if we die, it will be worth it!" It was clear that Wang Dacheng had made up his mind to face death.
"I see!" Wu Yong pondered for a moment. "It is feasible, but where can we get one?"
Wang Dacheng continued, "In battle, I observed that each Japanese Army infantry squad—equivalent to a Chinese platoon with about 50 to 70 men, typically organized into 54—includes an infantry team equipped with a light machine gun and a team armed with a grenade launcher."
Wang Dacheng paused briefly. "I've decided to have our brothers follow behind this Regimental Command Post and look for an opportunity to get our hands on a grenade launcher! Then we’ll find a chance to strike at their command center!"
Wu Yong thought for a moment. "Theoretically, it's doable, but we haven't brought any supplies. Can we really wait around for an opportunity?"
Wang Dacheng gazed at the Japanese Army camp and said decisively, "If we don't take risks, we'll never have a chance! Let's gamble on this!"
Just as Wang Dacheng finished speaking, gunfire suddenly erupted from their previous position. The Japanese Army command post below was bustling with activity as more people came and went.
Wu Yong was taken aback for a moment before suddenly exclaiming joyfully, "Xu Shizhang has launched an all-out attack!"
Wang Dacheng slammed his fist down excitedly and said, "This is just what we needed! The Japanese Army will surely be in chaos now; when they’re busy, that’s our chance! Brothers, stay alert!"
Everyone lay flat on the ground, observing the movements of the Japanese Army below. In the dim light of the campfires, a large number of Japanese soldiers began to move along the road towards Zou City. Wang Dacheng calmly observed and slowly said, "Everyone must be cautious and not expose yourselves. We only need to follow their command post from the rear."
At this moment, the sounds of gunfire from the direction of Zou City grew increasingly dense and intense. It seemed that the two armies had already engaged in fierce combat. Wu Yong glanced worriedly towards Zou City, where half the sky was almost illuminated by flames.
Thus, everyone remained silent and prone, unsure how much time had passed when the sounds of gunfire gradually subsided. Just as Wu Yong was about to speak, he saw a large number of Japanese soldiers pouring out from various tents in their command post. Wang Dacheng whispered urgently, "Not good!"
Everyone looked at Wang Dacheng in confusion. He spoke hoarsely, "Our attack has likely been repelled. The Japanese Army is planning to launch an overnight assault on Zou City!"
Just as everyone expressed their regret, Wang Dacheng continued, "Brothers, it's time for you all to show what you're made of. Follow me closely and remember, no firing!"
The Japanese Army moved swiftly; it wasn't long before they organized their formation and silently advanced towards Zou City. Wang Dacheng could see clearly through his binoculars that the command post had already set off, with only a small number of Japanese soldiers remaining behind to pack up the camp.
"It looks like there are only one or two squads," Wang Dacheng muttered to himself. Suddenly, he stood up, swung his submachine gun behind him, and drew out his Great Sword. "Follow me!"
Everyone mimicked him, taking their Great Swords in hand. Wu Yong didn't have a Great Sword and had no choice but to follow Wang Dacheng empty-handed as they slowly made their way down the mountain. In the darkness, they stumbled over each other’s feet, moving almost in single file until they reached the base.
Due to the caution of the Japanese Army, even when they reached the bottom of the hill, they were still several hundred meters away from the command post's camp. Wang Dacheng and his group had to lie low and move slowly.
Fortunately, after a while, the Japanese soldiers packing up began to withdraw as well. Only a dozen Japanese Devils remained at the camp along with a few pack mules.
With only a few dozen meters left to cover, Wang Dacheng signaled for everyone to spread out and approach the Japanese Devils. Within ten meters, there were two Japanese Devils closest to them, extinguishing the campfire while carrying their rifles. Wang Dacheng tapped Zhang Gosheng beside him; Zhang nodded and crawled towards the left Japanese Devil while Wang Dacheng moved towards the right one. The others slithered past like snakes and continued forward.
They were getting closer! Just as Wang Dacheng was about to reach the side of a Japanese Devil, suddenly everything went dark—the remaining campfire was extinguished by one of them. Wu Yong's vision also turned black; the last thing he saw was Wang Dacheng leaping up suddenly!
As Wu Yong's eyes adjusted to the darkness, he discovered that Wang Dacheng and Zhang Gosheng were each holding down a Japanese Devil, struggling fiercely. However, when the Great Sword swept across the neck of one Japanese Devil, both of them suddenly fell silent.
Wu Yong and his two companions followed closely behind, their hearts racing as they watched. The two Japanese Devils stood almost opposite each other, their coordination impeccable; even a slight miscalculation could alert the nearby Japanese Devils and trigger a catastrophic disaster.
Silently eliminating the two Japanese Devils, Wang Dacheng and Zhang Gosheng dropped to the ground and crawled forward. Wu Yong hurried to catch up. As he passed by one of the Japanese Devil's corpses, he took the bayonet from it and gripped it tightly in his hand.
The remaining Japanese Devils were scattered throughout the camp, standing far apart from each other, unaware of the approaching enemies for the time being.
When Wang Dacheng crawled to the next campfire, he noticed that one of the Japanese Soldiers had already been taken down by his brothers. He casually lifted the corpse of the Japanese Devil and pressed it onto the campfire. As sparks flew, the fire was quickly extinguished under the weight of the heavy body.
As long as they acted quickly enough, they could eliminate this group of Japanese Soldiers before being discovered. Wang Dacheng thought this as he looked up; there were only two campfires still burning around him—one was close, less than 30 meters away, and the other was farther off, about fifty or sixty meters away. Each had two Japanese Soldiers nearby. Just then, figures suddenly moved near the distant campfire, followed by a few short shouts and then sounds of fighting!
Nearby, two Japanese Soldiers at another campfire immediately pulled their triggers and rushed over with wild cries!
“Not good! Who messed up?” Wang Dacheng's heart sank!
