"Hey, why hasn't Dot come along?" I wondered, taking a few steps closer. It was then that I noticed it was a bit restless, pacing in circles as if it wanted to catch up but had some reservations. 0

I called out to it, but there was no response. Frowning, I turned around and spotted the fast-food restaurant where we had eaten last time. An idea suddenly struck me. 0

I glanced back at Dot, still caught up in its dilemma, and hurried over to the restaurant. I ordered two chicken legs and two chicken wings, then came back outside with the food wrapped up. 0

Taking a few steps closer, I tossed a chicken leg onto the ground not far from Dot. It abruptly stopped its circling and began sniffing the air. Soon enough, it caught the scent of the "good stuff" nearby. The desire for delicious food completely overwhelmed its reservations. After a brief hesitation, it lunged forward. Who would have thought that this creature would be so interested in fast food like a child! 0

With a powerful leap, it lowered its head and snapped up the chicken leg from the ground, crunching through both meat and bone in one go! What strong teeth and appetite! I couldn't help but sigh in amazement as I quickly turned and tossed out another chicken wing. 0

Thus, I continued to lure Dot with food, gradually leading it further away. Before long, we were nearing the riverbank far from the hospital, and my supply of bait was running low! I quickly pulled out my phone and called Old Zhou, informing him that Dot had been distracted and urging him to hurry up; I couldn't guarantee that this creature wouldn't turn around and run back once it had eaten enough. 0

After hanging up, I turned back to see that my worries were unfounded. Dot had finished the last piece of bait I'd given it and was now staring blankly at the rushing river. 0

Indeed, it was lost in thought. Although I couldn't see its eyes, I was certain it was gazing at the water, pondering something unknown. 0

I approached Dot's side and noticed a flowerbed nearby. Sitting down along its edge, I casually patted its back. "What are you thinking about? You seem so deep in thought." 0

Dot glanced back at me before plopping down on the ground again, turning its head to continue staring at the river. "Oh, look at you, Foodie; suddenly acting all contemplative," I teased. 0

"Are you reminiscing about an old flame?" Seeing how focused it was made me unable to resist saying that. 0

"Roar!" Dot turned back and barked a few times at me as if warning me not to joke around. I couldn't help but smile; this fellow was almost human-like. 0

As I watched Dot from the side, the wind began to pick up. The breeze occasionally ruffled its fur on the forehead, revealing glimpses of its eyes—deep and spirited—shimmering with wisdom. Honestly, have you ever seen a dog with such profound eyes? In that moment, I almost believed it was human; surely it had its own past and stories... 0

So there we sat by the riverbank—one person and one beast—taking in the scenery for quite some time until my phone rang. Pulling it out, I saw it was Old Zhou calling. Quickly answering, I asked, "How's everything on your end?" My voice trembled slightly; honestly, I didn't even know why I cared so much about Xi—I had only met her a few times. 0

"Just come back and see for yourself!" Old Zhou hung up the phone. 0

What the hell! My heart sank; why couldn't Old Zhou just finish his sentence in one go?! 0

I hung up and stood up to leave, but Dd didn't move. "I'm going back, Foodie," I said to it. 0

It turned to glance at me but remained still. 0

Oh wow! What a strange creature! "Fine, you stay here in the wind; I'm leaving!" I tossed out before hurrying away. 0

At that moment, Dd suddenly turned around and bit down on the corner of my shirt, dragging me back and refusing to let go. I was a bit anxious; what was wrong with this creature? 0

What should a person do when a large dog nearly as tall as their waist has bitten their clothing? I don't know about others, but I certainly didn't dare to provoke it. I had seen its teeth—snow-white and sharp, each one like a curved blade. I had no doubt it could easily snap my leg bone in half. 0

After the initial panic wore off, I had no choice but to sit back down and sweet-talk it. At this point, even I felt a bit crazy; when have you ever seen someone negotiating with a dog? But what could I do? It had a firm grip on my shirt! 0

"Dd, come on, let's go home!" 0

No movement. 0

"Foodie, I'll buy you chicken legs when we get back!" 0

Still no movement. 0

"Yingluo misses you; come on, Dd, let's hurry back." 0

Not a budge. 0

"It’s raining, and there’s thunder. Bring in the clothes!" 0

Still, there was no movement. 0

... 0

I don’t know how long it took, but just when I had given up hope, Dian Dian suddenly sighed and turned back. 0

It took me a moment to react, and I quickly followed, hurrying toward the Inpatient Department of the hospital. 0

Dian Dian didn’t need me to escort him back. I watched as he turned into the Hutong Entrance before I rushed toward the ward. Old Zhou's half-uttered words had left me anxious; I still hadn’t figured out what they meant. 0

Could it be that they failed?? 0

Looking at the few elevators still ascending, I repeatedly pressed the button on the wall, hoping the elevator would come down faster. After waiting for several minutes, I finally couldn’t hold back any longer and chose to take the stairs. I turned and dashed into the stairwell, running straight to Xi’s floor. 0

I ran up the stairs in one breath, and just as I was nearing the top, I saw Old Zhou standing casually in the hallway, smoking a cigarette, looking relaxed and indifferent. 0

I was furious. Gritting my teeth, I rushed up the last few steps and confronted Old Zhou. "Old Zhou, did you mess things up again?! I knew I shouldn’t trust you quacks with your mumbo jumbo!" I scolded him in exasperation. 0

Old Zhou didn’t get angry or respond to me; instead, he pointed to the door behind him. What did that mean? Was he telling me to see for myself? This really wasn’t the time to scold him. Frustrated, I pushed open the door and walked into the ward area. The closer I got to Xi’s room, the more my heart raced! 0

It was already close to three in the afternoon, still during nap time, and the ward was eerily quiet. My heart pounded loudly in my chest; it felt like the sound echoed in my ears. My footsteps slowed down; I truly didn’t want to see anything happen to Xi. 0

First, I passed by Yao's room. Outside, the sky had turned very gloomy; all the rooms were lit up except for Yao's, which was shrouded in darkness. A wave of helplessness washed over me—I knew Yao was gone. 0

A few more rooms down was Xi’s ward. I hesitated a bit but knew that retreating now would be pointless. Steeling myself, I approached Xi's room door. My hand gripped the doorknob, but I still didn’t go in immediately; instead, I stood there listening intently. 0

Inside, there was a quietness that seemed out of place; if Xi had woken up, shouldn’t it be bustling with activity? At the very least, her parents wouldn’t be so calm, right? 0

Grinding my teeth, I twisted the doorknob and pushed the door open! 0

What greeted me first was Xi’s tear-streaked face on the hospital bed, looking like a flower drenched in rain. 0

Xi's parents were surrounding her, silently shedding tears, completely overwhelmed with joy and sorrow, their cries stifled as they embraced each other tightly. 0

Seeing this scene, I let out a sigh of relief, feeling as if a heavy stone had been lifted from my heart. I quietly closed the door to the ward and stepped outside. 0

I walked slowly to the stairwell where Old Zhou was still smoking. No need to ask; it was definitely the cigarettes given by Dad Xi—what a guy! 0

I approached him without hesitation and extended my hand. “Give me one!” 0

Old Zhou looked at me in surprise. “Aren’t you the one who doesn’t smoke?” 0

“I feel like smoking now!” 0

Old Zhou silently pulled out a cigarette and handed it to me, along with a lighter. I took them both, lit up, and took a deep drag before breaking into a violent cough. 0

“Don’t waste it if you can’t handle it,” Old Zhou said, exhaling a puff of smoke with an air of resignation. 0

“Don’t mind me! So, what’s going on?” 0

“What do you mean? Didn’t you see for yourself?” 0

“Then why didn’t you explain clearly over the phone? You scared me to death.” 0

Old Zhou suddenly smiled mysteriously. "Do you like that Girl? She's not bad looking, and her family is wealthy. Ah, it must be true." 0

"You’re overthinking it," I replied, trying to sound serious. 0

"That Girl is really lucky. When I started casting the spell, there was no response at all. I had no idea where her soul was! Later, I was about to give up, but after I called you, suddenly her soul came back." 0

"Is it really that mysterious?" I asked skeptically. 0

"Well, whether it is or not, the important thing is that she's okay now. So, I'm not going in. You owe me dinner tonight!" 0

"Sure thing!" 0

Just then, the door to the stairwell opened, and someone walked out. It was Dad Xi. He said to me, "Xi wants to see you." 0
