I was just about to speak when Big Yellow rushed up beside me and sternly questioned Swallow, "How did you know someone was in trouble?" Xiao Mo Ya, standing nearby, looked startled and helpless, glancing between us. I sighed and explained to Xiao Mo Ya, "Big Yellow's master, Captain Liu, who took care of him, passed away recently. It was a suicide. Swallow seemed to have sensed something at the last gathering, so I brought Big Yellow here to clarify things."
I glanced sideways at Swallow; she appeared to be quite perceptive. My words were also directed at her. She sat motionless on the bed and said, "I've already moved on. Some dreams cannot be dismissed as mere fantasies, yet you still don't believe me." Big Yellow immediately followed up, "Then what is your relationship with my master? Even if it was a dream, how could you dream about him?"
Swallow replied calmly, "Let's all sit down first; I'll explain everything slowly." Big Yellow and I exchanged glances before finding chairs for ourselves and Xiao Mo Ya, quietly waiting for Swallow to elaborate.
"To be honest, I don't know your master at all and had no idea he would be in trouble," Swallow stated.
"Then how did you..." I pulled on Big Yellow's sleeve, signaling him not to interrupt. His anxiousness was already showing, which wasn't a good sign.
Swallow glanced at me with a hint of approval in her eyes before continuing, "Actually, I didn't want to go to that gathering at all. But after Moya insisted repeatedly that I help check on her crush, I reluctantly agreed to attend your gathering. Once I arrived at that place, I felt an overwhelming sense of familiarity; it was as if I had seen that scene somewhere before. After thinking carefully, it seemed like I had dreamed about it before. The faces of the people were quite blurry; I couldn't tell who was who until Moya said a few words. Then when you all started drinking, I realized the situation in my dream was related to you."
"What did you say?" I interjected. "Moya, do you remember what I told you about your crush?" Swallow turned her head toward Moya.
Moya's face instantly flushed red as she stole a glance at me and nodded. My heart sank; so it was Swallow who informed her. That couldn't possibly be me; it didn't seem right at all. As I pondered this, Swallow addressed Xiao Mo Ya directly, "Did you think it was him? Mine is this officer here!"
We three looked up at Swallow in surprise and exchanged glances. Xiao Mo Ya blushed even more and lowered her head shyly, murmuring, "So you predicted there would be someone in uniform..."
"Hey! You're so impatient! I'm not finished yet. Did you not notice Officer Huang is also in uniform?"
"Ah!" Both Xiao Mo Ya and I were taken aback. It turned out that Swallow's connection was with Big Yellow! Even Big Yellow momentarily forgot what he wanted to ask and stared blankly at Swallow.
Swallow continued speaking to us, "Not long ago, I had a dream about Moya. It felt like she would be in danger but would ultimately be fine; soon after that, she would meet her true love and get married."
"You could dream that!?" I couldn't help but interject again. Swallow glanced at Big Yellow and said, "It wasn't so clear-cut; however, I did dream about attending her wedding. The closer the people are to me over time, the more vivid my dreams become. Based on my feelings, that person should be connected to this officer here."
“Swallow, how did you come to have this ability?” I asked, trying to ease the awkwardness in the room.
“Oh, it’s a long story. I had a serious illness once, and after I recovered, I started dreaming about things that hadn’t happened yet. Over time, many of those dreams came true. Honestly, I don’t even know how it works,” she replied.
“Then what did you mean by that statement?” Big Yellow asked after a moment of silence, finally getting to the point.
“What statement?”
“The one about the people around you. A few days later, my master passed away on Thursday,” Big Yellow said, his voice heavy with sorrow.
“I’m sorry,” Swallow said softly as she looked at Big Yellow. “Actually, it’s quite simple. I dreamt about attending your gathering before, and then Moya brought you to find me. It could only mean that something happened to someone close to you.”
I rolled my eyes; it seemed like I had nothing to do with this at all. I glanced at Big Yellow, who didn’t react. I pulled him aside and asked, “Do you believe her? How credible do you think she is?”
Big Yellow thought for a moment before responding, “I can’t say for sure about her credibility. It could be a coincidence. But one thing is certain: we won’t find any valuable clues here.”
At that moment, Moya timidly stepped out of the room and tugged at Big Yellow’s sleeve. “Is Sister Yuyan okay? Are you doubting her?” It seemed she finally grasped the situation. Big Yellow hesitated before saying, “No, I’m just looking for clues. There’s too little information.”
“Do you believe Sister Yuyan’s words?”
Big Yellow pondered again. “I do believe her. Humans have a sixth sense for danger and predictions; it’s just that this instinct has faded over time through evolution. Swallow might be an exception—perhaps she has undergone some kind of mutation. Women generally have stronger intuition than men; they might have vague premonitions about the future. There have been similar reports abroad, but I don’t know if she has any dreams related to me.”
“Don’t worry; there aren’t any. Everything I know about you, I’ve already told you. That’s all there is to it; not everyone’s life is something I dream about.” We turned around to see Swallow leaning against the doorframe calmly while glancing at Xiao Mo Ya. It seemed that Xiao Mo Ya had a good relationship with her, but for some reason, this woman always gave me an impression of having seen too much of the world—there was a sense of weariness about her, even an emotional coldness.
Swallow sighed softly and said, “Honestly, I wish I didn’t have this ability. A life without knowing the outcome is much happier.”
I was originally planning to turn away with Big Yellow to discuss our next steps, but upon hearing her words, I felt a stir in my heart. I turned back to her and said, "Actually, I have a theory that I'm not sure is true. Just hear me out; it might inspire you to open your heart and change your life."
She, along with Big Yellow and Moya, looked at me. I paused for a moment to choose my words carefully and began slowly, "I have a hobby; I really enjoy watching science fiction films. In the realm of science fiction, there’s a theory called 'parallel universes.' I wonder if you’ve heard of it? The basic idea is that there are many universes existing parallel to ours, which do not interfere with one another. Each parallel universe must have its own differences. So, there must be one universe that represents the future, one that reflects the present reality, and one that embodies the past."
"The situation with Swallow is likely due to the effects of an illness that has caused her brain to undergo some special changes. This change may have allowed her brainwaves—or what we might call her subconscious—to traverse parallel universes. So while Swallow is asleep, this crossing occurs, and this form of traversal can only reach another universe's brain that has similar wave patterns. In other words, she accesses another version of herself in a different universe to read memories from her past. What Swallow predicts in her dreams is merely the past experiences of another version of herself from a future universe—experiences that have yet to happen in our current reality. This also explains why her predictions are not 100% accurate."
"So, Swallow, I believe you really don’t need to be troubled. The information you’ve accessed is just one possible future event. You can choose to wait for it to unfold step by step or take control of your own destiny and change it. Your future is still in your hands in this world; what kind of life you want depends on who you are right now! Trust me!"
After finishing my explanation, I glanced at Big Yellow and Xiao Mo Ya. Their mouths were agape in disbelief as they processed what I had said. Looking at Swallow, I could see her emotions fluctuating as she murmured, "Is it really like that? I think it should be! This is the only explanation!"
Seeing the expressions on the other two's faces, I added, "If you're still having trouble understanding, let me put it this way: In 2001, Jet Li starred in a movie called 'The One.' You might want to check it out; it’s somewhat along these lines."
I then looked at Swallow again and said, "Actually, you're lucky. Your life has countless possibilities compared to most people, and you can grasp those possibilities. Shouldn't you do something about it? Search within yourself and strive for a smoother and happier life?"
With that, noticing Swallow deep in thought, I signaled to Big Yellow that it was time to go. After saying my goodbyes, I took the lead down the stairs.
