I didn't board the boat; instead, I handed over the package in my hands.
Song Wen looked at me in surprise. "Lianyi?"
"I grew all this food myself. Uncle Song and Auntie are among the few people in the village who have treated me well, so this is my token of appreciation."
Song Wen threw down the bundle and jumped off the boat. "What are you doing? Didn't I tell you to come with me?"
I smiled and shook my head. "I'm just here to see you off. I won't be going with you; my husband is here."
Upon hearing the word "husband," Song Wen's expression changed.
I urged him, "It's getting late; we should hurry."
After I spoke, I turned around and almost ran back to the River God Temple.
Sure enough, when I pushed open the temple door, I locked eyes with Longyin.
He was crouched down tending to my vegetable garden, and for a moment, he looked startled upon seeing me.
"You?"
I knew he wanted to ask why I had returned.
Breathing heavily, I smiled at him. "I'm afraid of water; I can't travel by water."
"Look at me," I said with a smile, "this time my childhood companion has run away, so you have to take me in for life."
We gazed at each other, and beneath Longyin's cold expression lay an indescribable softness.
I rolled up my sleeves and took the water bucket from his hands, skillfully watering the vegetables I had planted.
Everything felt normal, as if the matter of Song Wen wanting to take me away had never happened.
I deliberately asked him, "Aren't you skilled in magic? Why did you use a water bucket just now? Isn't that too much effort?"
He remained silent for a long while before finally looking down at me. "Perhaps I wanted to experience the hardships of your daily labor."
"Ugh..." Longyin said, followed by a light grunt.
"What's wrong with you?"
"Nothing."
He pretended to be nonchalant, but after I pressed him, he admitted, "I've been overusing my magic lately and need to rest for a few days."
I was annoyed that he didn't take care of himself, yet I felt an underlying sense of unease.
Longyin looked at me seriously and said, "Lianyi, I gave you a chance. It was your choice not to leave. Don't regret it later."
"I will never regret it!"
Thinking of the torment I had endured these past few days, I scooped up a handful of water and splashed it at him.
The two of us were playing around, and Longyin couldn't dodge in time, getting his brocade robe soaked. Yet, he only cared about my happiness, as if he poured all his tenderness into me.
I stared at him in a daze.
I realized Longyin had changed; he was no longer indifferent, no longer so detached from the world.
It seemed he had developed emotions, but they were buried so deep that even he himself was unaware of them.
That night, a sudden storm broke out around us.
I shifted slightly and suddenly woke up.
This village only became like this when Longyin was angry; what was going on today?
As I pondered, a blinding light flashed suddenly, followed by a bolt of lightning striking the temple.
I got up and stepped outside. Longyin was not there, but someone was standing outside the River God Temple.
"Brother Songwen?"
Song Wen didn't care about my protests and simply grabbed my hand, pulling me outside.
I broke free from his grip. "Brother Songwen, what are you doing?"
"I’ve found a famous doctor in the capital. I'm taking you to see him."
I struggled against Song Wen's hand. "I'm not sick! What do I need to see a doctor for?"
I sensed something was off. Just as I broke free from Song Wen, several others rushed in through the rain.
"There’s an outbreak of rabies outside. Several people have already shown symptoms—talking nonsense, imagining they’re getting promoted and rich. A few, like you, feel like there are people around them..."
Song Wen was anxious, holding onto me tightly, and I struggled even harder.
In a moment of desperation, Song Wen shouted at me, "Lianyi! Stop being stubborn! You've already caught this madness; how can you not see a doctor?"
It turned out that Song Wen hadn’t insisted on taking me with him that day because he had already made up his mind to do so.
He thought I was sick, suffering from hysteria.
He was only trying to help me, but I wasn’t sick at all!
"Longyin!" Just as I was about to argue further and felt utterly helpless, another rumble of thunder echoed through the air.
The deafening sound of thunder echoed through the River God Temple.
Someone shouted, "Lord Song!"
Song Wen immediately turned his gaze toward the light. He couldn't see the person in the lightning but vaguely sensed a wave of pressure.
I said to Song Wen, "My husband has returned."
The people who came with Song Wen were in a panic. "Lord Song, this place is too strange; we cannot treat it lightly!"
They looked at me as if I were a monster, dragging Song Wen away and preventing him from concerning himself with a madwoman like me.
Suddenly, a flash of white light appeared before me, and a bolt of lightning struck towards me. In the next moment, someone fell from the void, tightly shielding me.
"Longyin?"
The person was covered in blood and looked extremely weak.
As the thunder finally ceased, I heard Longyin's faint voice beside me. "It's okay, don't be afraid."
It turned out that tonight's thunder was Longyin undergoing tribulation. He had rushed out to protect me.
In the end, when the heavenly thunder struck me, he was gravely injured while trying to shield me.
The wound took a full year to heal within the River God Temple, and since then, no one dared to step foot in that place again. The surrounding villagers even believed that the River God was an evil deity.
As a local official, Song Wen personally experienced an incident that solidified Longyin's identity as a malevolent god.
The faith and offerings from the people had completely ceased.
After recovering, Longyin asked me, "Lianyi, have you thought about the future?"
"The future?"
Longyin knew that my life had become increasingly difficult, and he looked at me with pity. "You should plan for your own future."
"My future is you. I want to stay by your side, right here, without going anywhere."
As I said this, I fixed my gaze on Longyin, wanting him to see my determination.
"You silly girl," Longyin chuckled lightly.
Life continued to move forward in its ordinary way. For some reason, the village gradually began to experience favorable weather.
I asked Longyin if he had done something again. He simply replied that the opportunity had arrived.
