"We meet again."
Jelf looked at the familiar face before him, a face that had seen love and separation through the years.
"Yes, why did we end up like this?"
Mavis gazed at her beloved, the once youthful boy who had now become the emperor of a great nation. It wasn't even a comeback; Jelf had always been a master of magic from the very beginning.
An unspoken silence hung between them. Both Jelf and Mavis had thought that after such a long separation, their reunion would be filled with warmth, or perhaps they would feel like strangers. But now, it was neither; only silence lingered between them.
Mavis didn't know what expression to wear while looking at Jelf. He could be the most important person in her life, yet this same person had waged war against her Guild.
For Jelf, the situation was even more complicated. Having lived for so long, he had witnessed too many tragedies caused by Acnologia. He wanted to give others a beautiful future while also putting an end to his own tragic life. All of this required sacrificing the life of his beloved, which troubled him. After all, he thought, he would die alongside her; they were not meant for this era anyway. Perhaps leaving together wasn't such a bad idea.
"Why haven't I seen your Holy Twelve Shields?"
Mavis could only make small talk; as a lively 'old lady', the heavy atmosphere made her uncomfortable.
"This is my own matter; I won't let anyone interfere."
Jelf shook his head and suddenly smiled.
"Honestly, I never expected your Guild to grow to this extent. There are so many promising talents within it now. The current President Makarov and that Newton are both quite impressive. I believe that even if we were to leave, they would manage just fine."
"Why aren't you looking at your brother?"
Mavis playfully tilted her head as she watched Jelf prepare a magic circle.
"Natsu..."
Jelf sighed.
"He is indeed my brother, but right now he is more of a Mage from Fairy Tail, isn't he?"
"That's right. Once you're in Fairy Tail, you're one of us. Don't even think about taking him away."
Mavis stood with her hands on her hips, looking every bit like a mob boss, her expression stubborn and unyielding.
"Yes, yes, yes. Back in the day, you were the one who dragged everyone in and formed your own Guild. They had quite a hard time back then, putting up with you as the reckless President."
The two seemed to be transported back to those early days when Mavis had bumped into Jelf with her bare feet, looking adorably clueless. Jelf had watched as Mavis built the Guild, led them through wars, earned the title of Fairy Strategist, and then fell under a curse...
"Unfortunately, all of that is now in the past..."
Jelf's gaze became resolute. Because of the beauty of their past, he was determined to end the tragedies of this world and the ones that plagued both himself and Mavis.
"Still, not seeing those kids in the end does leave me a bit disappointed..."
Mavis stuck out her tongue, her face showing little disappointment; instead, she appeared calm. It felt somewhat nice that people who should have died hundreds of years ago were now laying the foundations for a new era.
To lift or merge the curses afflicting them would require extensive preparation, even with Jelf's abilities. Mavis, just returned to her body, could do nothing but watch as Jelf busied himself.
Just as they were preparing, Fairy Tail erupted into chaos. Mavis was taken away, and everyone's expressions turned grim.
"Newton, let's go save her."
Natsu was impulsive as ever, already thinking about how to rescue her.
"How do we save her? Where do we even start?"
Newton shook his head. If she had been forcibly taken away, there might have been a chance to rescue her. But it was clear that Mavis had agreed to Jelf's plan. Unless they addressed the root of the problem, it would be futile given their current situation.
"Of course, we go to those guys, take them all down, and then rescue the First Generation!"
With a straightforward and blunt thought process, Natsu declared confidently.
"It needs to be done carefully, but how can you be sure that Jelf really took the First Generation back? What if he took them somewhere else?" Newton looked at Natsu.
"And don't forget, their overall goal isn't just the Albarez Empire; it's us too. Jelf wants to deal with Acnologia, that Demon Dragon."
The implication was clear: Acnologia was out hunting dragons, targeting people like Natsu. If they could eliminate Acnologia, then Natsu would be safe for good.
"I can..."
Natsu wanted to say more, but Newton interrupted him with a harsh shout.
"Enough! Hand me the scarf; I need to see what information your dad left for us."
Natsu shut his mouth and handed over the scarf from around his neck. Without further ado, Newton turned and headed back to the laboratory.
"Can't we really go rescue the First Generation?" Miraj asked Newton, her concern evident. She could tell from his earlier outburst that he wasn't in a good mood.
"Rescue..."
Newton sighed, feeling quite helpless.
"Of course we have to rescue them."
"So?"
"I've investigated the curse. Although it's related to the gods and there is very little information available, I do have some general understanding. The difficulty of this curse is such that even Jelf would need extensive preparations and a considerable amount of time to utilize it. This time frame is our buffer period. On one hand, I need to decipher the messages left by the Dragon Tribe, and on the other hand, we must prepare for war against Jelf and Acnologia..."
"Is that all? We don't have enough people for that."
Miraj was somewhat skeptical that Newton wasn't hiding something more dangerous.
Newton sighed.
"Alright, I'm just planning to find some reinforcements. That way, our chances of winning will be higher."
"Reinforcements?"
Miraj had no idea who Newton was referring to as reinforcements. Hadn't this continent already... Suddenly, Miraj thought of something.
"Are you... serious?"
"Yes, I've already sent Ginger to the Albarez Empire camp. Fortunately, we haven't developed a deep hatred with them yet... hopefully. I just hope that Jelf, as emperor, still has many people in his country who want him to survive."
