"Have they already left?"
As the entire city lay buried beneath a thick layer of yellow sand, Newton appeared in the endless dunes, clad in yellow armor.
"How many people died this time?"
Mavis's voice crackled through the communicator.
"I don't know. But if the shelter managed to hold up, perhaps more people survived," Newton replied.
He truly had no idea. Given the circumstances, the chances of anyone outside surviving were exceedingly slim. Even for Newton himself, without his armor or Alchemy to create a safe space, he had little confidence in his survival. Although the shelter was built robustly to protect everyone as much as possible, seeing the entire city covered in sand made Newton Joan hesitant to make any guarantees.
"But why? The enemy destroyed this city outright, not even to seize resources, and they didn't take anyone away—just pure slaughter..."
Mavis was struggling to understand. Although she had received detailed information about the Holy Twelve Shields through Ginger, she still didn't grasp these individuals' humanity well enough to decipher their behavioral patterns.
"I don't know. Let's first check if One Night and the others are still alive."
With Agil gone, Newton felt less worried about being captured if he stepped outside now. However, it was best to prepare just in case. He decided to set up some devices around the city; even if members of the Holy Twelve Shields came, he would be ready.
Activating the detection device, he found that even beneath a thick layer of sand, he could easily locate any buried survivors. To his relief, despite the area appearing desolate, the readings on his screen indicated life signs, allowing him to breathe a quiet sigh of relief.
He first headed into the city center. The screen only displayed red dots; everyone looked the same, and Newton couldn't tell which ones belonged to One Night and his group. He decided to focus on those closest to him. He found several people—just ordinary citizens—without a trace of One Night or his companions.
"Damn it, those guys can't be dead, can they?"
While death was a common occurrence in war, those individuals had become friends. Witnessing strangers die might evoke sadness, but losing someone close felt entirely different.
With only a few red dots remaining on his screen, Newton could only pray that his friends were still there. Fortunately—or perhaps because the author wasn't ready to let these seemingly goofy yet undeniably manly characters die just yet—he found them battered and bruised. High temperatures and impacts had left their skin torn and ragged, resembling figures straight out of a horror film. The critical point was that given their physical condition combined with being buried under sand, even Grem would likely believe they were dead.
"Surviving is a good thing..."
Newton sighed. Now, aside from their physique revealing that they were from One Night, the remaining members—Xiang Lian and Ivan—had become indistinguishable from one another. It was impossible to tell them apart.
"Yes, surviving is a good thing, but is it really a good thing to survive?"
Mavis sighed. Although she appeared young, Mavis had truly lived through the war years. While she usually seemed like an ordinary girl, she was no stranger to the brutality of war and death; in fact, she was all too familiar with it. Many people had gone mad from injuries or psychological trauma during the war. These four individuals, along with the people of this city, had survived, but after enduring such cruelty, could they still stand up and fight? Mavis held little hope for that; she even wondered if they could continue to live normal lives.
Newton did not respond because he himself did not know the answer to that question. All he could do was hope that these people would be alright.
Naturally, they could no longer stay in this city. The armored forces relocated everyone to a city far away, while the four members of Azure Wind Antelope were sent to the best recovery room.
"Damn it!"
Natsu slammed his fist into the ground. This time, Fiore Kingdom had suffered a devastating defeat; an entire city had been destroyed, and countless citizens were left homeless. It was a significant blow for everyone. For the Mage Guild, it was even more so. Watching familiar faces turn into this state left President Pob of Azure Wind Antelope in a furious rage.
"Newton, can't we go over and give those guys some trouble right now?"
Pob seemed like an ordinary person at first glance, but he had been quite hot-tempered in his youth; otherwise, he wouldn't have associated with Makarov and others—who were all fearless in their younger days.
"I..."
Newton didn't know how to respond to this question. Could they not? But if his guild members had been beaten like this, he would probably rush over without a second thought. How could he ask others to endure? Newton believed he couldn't do that.
"Alright, let's go back and give them a big..."
Mavis seemed to agree with Pob's desire to confront their enemies, which excited the members of Fairy Tail as they looked at her eagerly. Newton frowned at this development.
"Ha..."
Newton let out a sigh.
"Alright, what do we do next?"
He had no intention of persuading anyone; since Mavis had taken on the role of commander, he simply needed to follow her lead.
"Well, we can discuss this in detail when we get back. For now, let's first settle those you rescued."
Mavis didn't plan to reveal her entire strategy just yet; she merely gave Newton a glance, and he nodded in response.
"Okay, everyone please go ahead and help the civilians I rescued..."
Without concerning himself with what the others in the room might be planning or wanting to ask, Newton led everyone out of the room.
"Are these guys preparing for a counterattack?"
Jackb Reishuo, a guy who looked quite similar to Jason Statham and specialized in something called Assassination Magic, appeared in the room. However, the moment he showed up, the surrounding space suddenly became sealed off.
